You know there were politicians in the 60 are who were rightly or wrongly accused of treason. But I am happy to see that theirs sons can have their own political life. Let judge people according to their merits. Cambodia is not alone to have members of the same family on and off at the helm of the country for decades. India, the biggest democracy in Asia, has witnessed Dr. Nehru and his daughter and grand-sons succeeding him for the last fifty years of the last century. In America, recently we had Bush father and son at the White House, one before President Clinton and the other next to him. The current president of the Philippines is actually the son of the former president of the country. And we can go on with Singapore and numerous countries in the entire world. I guess that during KR regime, enemies of Cambodia were watching happily in secret that Khmer Rouge killed not only adults considered as their enemies, but also the children of those people. Consequently, in less than three years they can get rid of close two millions of innocents Cambodians. This tragic lesson needed to be learned by every one. Please judge people according to theirs merits and not rush to demonize anyone jus because you don’t like the dad. In the case of Manet, he still has a long way to go. First to be the successor of his father, he got to be made candidate to the post of a party, let say CPP. It may not that easy. He didn’t attend universities in Hanoi or in China. He didn’t have a political career on which we can make our judgment. But it seems that people rush to demonize him just because his is the successful son of the PM that they hated. Pol Pot killed 80% of returnees from the West with higher educations and willing to rebuild the country after devastating war. They were killed just because they were sons or daughters of wealthy families that send them to have good education. Now we understand that human resources are the most valuable resource on earth and it takes a long time to train people to some capacity to make useful contribution to the country. I hope that all of us got to learn to think Cambodia first, not the particular individual, or a particular party. It is legitimate to love or hate some one with forty years of political career. But we should avoid rushing to judge an individual, just because he is a son of somebody. If I were a PM, it is normal that I am dreaming to have my son to be the next one to me.
Former Eastern European countries became free countries, enjoying full independence and belong to UEC, because those countries had educated and sophisticated population. We are aspiring to liberty for our people, freed from foreign domination as in the past. But we need to think that every thing takes time and it is the same in country politics. With good education, our people can gain more freedom in a Cambodia with strong economy. The same way, no one see Singapore as a small country. Singaporeans gained the respect of every one, thank to the good shape of their economy and their higher system of education. It is a waist of time to look for people to blame and spending too much time whining on the cruelty of our neighbors. We should better ourselves to better compete with them. Surely we will gain some respect from them when our people become rich, smart and having excellent education. To me it is the best way to free ourselves from tyrannies of all kinds.
