“I'll continue involvement in politics because I want to represent our community, especially the Cambodians. I want progress and unity within the Cambodian community. I want them to exercise their rights, which start with going to vote, because there are a lot of us in the US, but most don't vote. That's why we don't get what we want. We don't benefit much.”Meas Sam, a Cambodian-American making a run for the US House of Representatives, saw his campaign come to an end in Tuesday's primary election, but he says that won't stop his engagement in politics.
A former refugee who was entering politics for the first time, Meas Sam lost to Jon Golnik for the Republican nomination in Massachusetts' fifth district.
“I'll continue involvement in politics because I want to represent our community, especially the Cambodians,” he told VOA Khmer after the defeat. “I want progress and unity within the Cambodian community. I want them to exercise their rights, which start with going to vote, because there are a lot of us in the US, but most don't vote. That's why we don't get what we want. We don't benefit much.”
Sam Meas received substantive support in his congressional bid, placing second, above two other candidates from his Republican party. He won in four out of 29 towns, including Lowell, where a sizable population of Cambodians lives.
He'd campaigned on a platform of job creation for Cambodian-Americans and putting a halt to the deportation of Cambodians under a US immigration law, earning 7,588 votes—26 percent—to Golnik's 11,377.
“This time he was not successful, but he is still young and active,” said Khut Khaoly, a Lowell resident who voted for Sam Meas. “If he continues patiently, the next time he will received more votes and win the election.”
Sam Meas said his next move will be to help encourage Cambodians to run for town councils and school committees.
“Sam has set a good example for our people in America,” said Yap Kimtung, president of the group Cambodian Americans for Human Rights and Democracy. “If there is a candidate, we the Cambodians should contribute our funds so that they can win the election.”
Golnik will battle Democratic incumbent Niki Tsongas in November's mid-term election.

I like Sam Meas' spririt and tenacity and his ambitious goal. This man has a goal and he plans the steps to make it a reality. His goal will eventually become a reality. My god who would have ever thought that a mere community leader with no military background, politics background with a Muslim ETHNIC name as "Barrack Hussein Obama" could become the President of the United States? It happened. Mr. Obama said it himself that the dominating incumbent ruling WHITES predicted that he could never do it, but those folks were dead wrong. Obama systematically and strategically and technologically planned out the steps of the entire process to get the Office Of the Presidency of the United States for HIMSELF. Even the presidential candidate hopeful McCain admitted that the defeated Republican Party was completely outclassed at every level and there was nothing to make a comeback against the Obama Team. If you were registered as a Democrat, the Obama team would request a 100 dollars donation to help the Obama campaign. When I look at Sam Meas, I have so much pride in him because he represents the Cambodian Spirit of Freedom and taking charge and exercising the rights guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States itself. I honor Sam Meas and I believe he is the Cambodian Martin Luther King or Mahattma Ghandi. Sam Meas is a greater symbol of the Camboian people and spirit. Sam Meas is a VOICE and SOUL coming to awaken the Cambodian Americans across America to wake up and participate with the American politics. This concept is never a new thing. The Japanese Americans number very small when compared to other ethnic American minority, but the Japanese community can make things happen just like that through legislations because the Japanese Americans participate fully in the politics of America. Japanese are top professionals in fields such as law, politics, government, finances, etc.
Sam Meas, you are the ONE and may god bless you and your family and your supporters. Your GOAL is set and it will be yours, this much I know so. You are the GREATEST example that the ethnic Cambodians in America ever produce. You are tops!

The American saw the poor Cambodian begging the Chinese man for some pennies. Then the American said to the both of them, "Listen, you guys, I know a legitimate business that can make a million dollar. Upon hearing the word "a million dollars" the Cambodian person simply sighed and gave up hope of not trying to hear anything at all. The Cambodian person said to the American, "I can never dream of a million dollars, so there is no point of wasting your time, telling me about how to gain it." Then the Cambodian beggar walked away. However, the Chinese rich person gave the American a chance and listened to the details on how to make a million dollars. The Chinese went on become a millionair by following the American advice while the Cambodian person died penniless and got rotten in the earth.
Likewise, Sam Meas represents the opportunity for the Cambodians but some retarded boneheads out there still think it is an impossibility because they are born hopeless and mentally f*cked up and weak. They are born to die and get rotten in the ground instead of having legacy to pass on the latter generations as proper human beings do. Lol.

OH, please stop the bickering. Sam Meas may not win and will never win politics but he serves as a good example for ethnic Cambodians living abroad to participate in the main stream politics.
Cambodian-American people need a strategy to win in main stream politics. Khmer Americans need the support from other ethnic groups such as whites, latinos, blacks, etc. If you are going into politics you need the support from these ethnic groups, not just from Cambodians. IT's not rocket science, but without the support from the majority, you are not going to win (although you can keep running until your hair turns gray :=)
