Ten million hits later…

KI-Media hits counter as of 18 September 2010
Snapshot of KI-Media access map on 19 September 2010

Dear Readers,

It seems as if it was yesterday when we, at KI-Media, started our tortuous path to deliver news to the Cambodian communities at large, as well as inside the country. In fact, it was on July 27, 2005 that we posted our first blog. At that time, we had in our hand a copy of a DVD distributed anonymously in Phnom Penh showing an interview with Chhay Vee detailing the 1997 grenade attack on SRP supporters in Phnom Penh. All that we wanted to do was to share that video with our compatriots and the world so that they understand the background behind that brutal and bloody attack on innocent bystanders. In 2005, Youtube was still in its infancy, therefore, showing a lengthy video was a very arduous task and we had to rely on “OurMedia.org” free storage space to host the video. Back then, several of our readers wrote to complain that their watching experience was not very satisfactory at all. Throughout the remainder of 2005, we languished with limited news on the Supplemental border treaty and the arrest of border activists, as well as the lawsuit against opposition leader Sam Rainsy.

Our call to action did not really take off until 31 December 2005 when Theary Seng sent out an email providing an account of the arrest of Kem Sokha for his protest against the Supplemental border treaty with Vietnam. The arrest was timed by the Hun Xen government to coincide with a weekend when news coverage would be limited. We realized then that the distribution of news information from Cambodia was quite limited. While the traditional news media, such as RFA, VOA or The Cambodia Daily, have presence over the Internet, the distribution of news was still not fast enough. What we wanted to see is a Twitter-like service dedicated to news from Cambodia, at a time when the Twitter concept did not exist yet. It was then and there that we found our calling: coming up with a blog with quick updates of news information from Cambodia.

Unlike nowadays, using a blog to distribute news in 2005 was a rather strange concept. In fact, we stumbled upon this idea mainly by necessity. As we were looking for a medium to distribute information over the Internet free of charge (we had no budget at all), we had the choice of going through the traditional road of obtaining a free hosted website with all its pitfalls and maintenance difficulties or resort to something else. When we looked at the computer technical skills of our team members, we soon realized that maintaining a full fledge website was out of our technical ability. It was then that I was tasked to find out if there would be other means to accomplish our task. Fortunately, in my quest to find a free hosting medium, I stumbled upon the concept of web log or blog which was a hot topic during that time. I then started to do some search and when I first saw a blog in action, especially, its journal-approach to display information, I knew right away that was exactly what we needed. It so happened that during my teenage years, I was obsessed with collecting newspaper clips on Cambodia that I would paste onto notebooks to help remind me of the various events that took place. It turned out that it was a fortunate obsession as it helped me realize that a blog is nothing more than an electronic version of my notebooks filled with newspaper clips. Furthermore, maintaining a blog is much more manageable for all our team members whose computer technical knowledge does not surpass much more than using word processor software. Voila, that was how we came to be!

Fast forward five years later: with the help of our various team members spread throughout the world, as well as numerous articles contributed by our readers, we have now reached a new benchmark. As of 19 September 2010, KI-Media had posted 36,133 articles, currently, we are being accessed from all the five continents in the world, from Mongolia to South America, nevertheless, our biggest surprise was to find out that the number of access by our readers in Cambodia now easily surpasses the number of our readers in North America. This discovery is quite encouraging as it means that Cambodians inside Cambodia proper now have better access to the Internet, and with this privilege, they want to learn about what is happening in their country, but not necessarily through the government-controlled source.

Ten million hits over the course of five years is nothing much to sneeze about when compared to sites such as DAP news, the pro-CPP news media, which boasts almost half a million hits per week. Nevertheless, for us, we are very grateful for every single hit we receive as they tell us that somebody out there want to know about the situation in Cambodia, our homeland.

We also take this opportunity to thank our team members who helped us time and time again, and we also very grateful to all the authors who have freely shared with our readers their articles, opinions, op-eds, cartoons, poems, announcements etc… without you all, we simply would not be here today!

Where do we go from here?

As stated above, maintaining and updating KI-Media, especially with zero budget, is a feat by itself. From personal experience, I can attest to the sleep-deprivation, fatigue, depression (when I read or translate sad stories), etc… One team member is even facing marriage breakup because of his dedication to maintaining the KI-Media website. Nevertheless, in spite of the long and arduous road we took since we started our journey in 2005, since the day when I personally thought that obtaining 1,000 hits per week was unachievable, when I now ask our team members if they would do it all over again, unanimously, they all agreed that it was worth it and that every single one of us would do it all over again if we had to. It is with this thought in mind that we hope to pursue our journey and we also hope that you would join us in our quest for the truth, as … “the truth shall set us free”.

Again, thank you all very much!

Yes, my dearest brothers and sisters in KI Media team. " The truth will set us Free "

May almighty God the Lord Jesus Christ bless all of you always.

May all your family's members will be bless also by the Lord Jesus Christ.

May Cambodia will be free from YUON colonisation and Chinese influence soon.

May Mr, Hun Sen wake up and realised that when YUON conquered Khmer people and Khmer's land completely, they will hack us (KABB KHMER) to death like they did to a 24 years old Khmer Kampuchea Krom at the rubber plantation 2 weeks ago.

Jesus said, "You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free."

9:25 Do you know the Truth? False promises because you are ignorant of the this Truth. God doesn't work on your terms, you must come on God's terms.

Cambodia has been a Buddhist country and still is: Where was Buddha in whom the people trust with all the bad things been happening in Cambodia?

IF God didn't litigate on behalf of Khmer's people we would have been as Cham. Jesus is more then glad to help if people will turn to him from their worthless idols.

God of Israel rules over the nations. The bible promise that through Jesus, (the tree of life) will the nations be healed. Again, God doesn't work on man's term, he has his own divine eternal purpose for the End of Days plan.

If you go learn the history of Israel from 1948 till now, you can see the covenant keeping God has kept his words concerning Israel as a backsliding nation. By human logic Israel should have been cease from being a people because of God's punishment against them. With the punishments also was a promised that he would regather them back to their land in end of days.

Peace can only come to the world when Jerusalem is at Peace! This is God's term. Israel is to be a centric of the world. Love Israel you will be bless. Curse Israel and you will be curse.

correction:

Mitigate instead of litigate

Though God rules over the affair of men, yet he will not force his will over what men choose to do. But he will intervene (mitigate) as he sees fits until the reign of man comes to an end. Therefore say the a proverb: "Every way of a man seem right in his own eyes but the end thereof is the way of death."

Great job KI-Media and your time. I am grateful for your dedication.

KI is the single media for all readers to balance the news relating to Cambodia.

KI is not like media controlled by government in Cambodia that has imbalancingly and biasedly to brainstorm and fool Cambodian people.

Such controlling of media is not the practice of democracy and it is dangerous for our future.

Cheer KI.

My suggestion if we can persuade more youths to join, it would be great. I agree with above comment about engaging with the youths.

Mr. Heng Soy and all the KI Media team members,

What can I say, but "Thank you very much for all the hard work and sacrifice you have done and made in bringing all of us news about Cambodia, our beloved but tragic country".

You have a lot of fans in many places around the globe and all of them want you to be successful.

We love your news which is updated quite regularly and fast. In addition it is free for everyone.

Your site also provides a forum for people to share opinions freely without being in fear of being prosecuted and persecuted.

It is very good that more readers of your site are our brothers and sisters in Cambodia as your site also indirectly espouses the notion of democracy, freedom and free expression of opinion.

Democracy in Cambodian and the notion of freedom of expression may only be taught to the younger generations and hopefully it will eventually bear fruits one day and again hopefully in the near future.

To maintain a site like yours requires time, commitment and dedication. The 3 virtues are themselves serious pressures put on all of you who need to work to support your family and also to support this site. When you cannot work to earn money because of the time you need to spend on maintaining this site, then it means that you are spending the money out of your own pockets to provide all of us, the readers with these incredible news.

As a regular reader of this site, I want to see your success continued since your work to bring us news comes directly from your loving hearts for your country, Cambodia which is also mine and Cambodia is a country that everyone of us who comes to your site loves and cherishes in our heart.

My suggestion to you is to set up a bank account with PayPal so that anyone of us who wants to contribute some small amount of money to you to help with your work can do so.

Cambodia is a land of corruption and money can corrupt people and there are a lot of corrupt Cambodians around so cynicism exists when it comes to collecting money for any project. Make sure you have a proper and transparent accountability of the collected money to show to contributors so that they will continue to contribute.

If you get more than what you need, donate the excess to various charity organizations in Cambodia. Again I cannot overemphasize the good accountability with the collected money.

If you are successful in this manner, then you demonstrate to everyone that an organization run by the Khmers can be free of corruption and that in itself is the real news you are sending out to all Cambodians including the government of PM Hun Sen.

I will be willing to contribute to your fund to help maintain your organization.

Again, thank you very much for all the hard work you have done in creating and maintaining this site.

Long live KI Media!

Anet Khmer

In this part of the world, people sometime like to use acronym to say or mean something esp. in the IT/Technical world - to me "KI-Media" means "KIM" just like the name of my Cambodian girlfriend.

I love "KIM", oh lala!!!
Eat your heart out Heng Soy...ROFL!

Need I say more?

When friends ask me about what is happening in srok khmer, I always refer them to KI Media. Some constantly glued to Radio Free Asia, but they never heard of KI, they were surprised to find out that KI is contantly up to date, even faster and better than VOA, RFA, and RFI.

Thank you so much for your hard work, KI team. The cool responses to criticism from the CPP or anti-KI people always draws my smile. You people have a great sense of humour, Heng Soy !

I wish you and your family luck and good health. We don't mind when you go off on holiday to visit your relatives living on the other side of the yuon border, which was once part of the Khmer territory.

Congratulation KI for your efforts to inform us all about Cambodia.

We are really appreciated for this.

I strongly recommend that you create a page that anyone could contribute and donate to your invaluable services.

If your team decide to create an donation page, please make sure it is safe, by placing either Paypal or Verisign logos so that people feel safe to donate through charging their credit cards.

Dear KI and All Khmer's Lovers,

It is very interesting in this personal and touching reflection. The most interesting part to is that one of the team member is facing divorce due to I am guessing spending significant amount of time and dedication to KI.

I can really relate to that myself. Although we are not getting a divorce because of utilizing a lot of time to help our Khmer's identity and future existence in this world, instead she is the one who is devoting even more time to the cause.

I have to admit before we got married, she even condemn me not to help out the community any longer. But now after 10 years of married she is the one who is relaying the torch from me. And she is very good at it too.

It really does take time to educate and a whole lot of patient to get through some one and bring them to your side.

Great job KI and I hope all your team member will win all Khmer heart and especially their love-ones.
