PHNOM PENH, Cambodia — Fourteen people have died from drinking wine tainted with weed killer at a ceremony where the Cambodian villagers were appealing to spirits to protect children.

Twenty people still were hospitalized Monday.

Police in the eastern province of Kampong Cham said the victims drank locally produced rice wine from a bottle that had previously contained toxic herbicide. They are still investigating but believe the poisoning was accidental.

Provincial police chief Nuon Samin said people felt weak soon after drinking the wine at the ceremony Saturday. Nine died soon after, and five more on Sunday and Monday, even though doctors rushed to the village.

The community is 120 kilometres (75 miles) east of the capital Phnom Penh.

Will this deadly mistake be repeated? The bottles could be use for other purpose by unknown victims. Either break the bottles or rinse it really good to prevent usage after it is empty.

I am a doctor. I had witnessed and treated a lot of people intoxicated with Rice wine.

You must be aware that if the rice wine contains Methylic Alcohol (CH3-OH), it will kill the drinkers almost 100%.

The CH3-OH causes heart failure and destroys the optic nerve. People who drink that tainted wine feel chest pain an become instantly blind.

The Methylic Alcohool (CH3-OH)originates from disitilled wood(be catious with the SRA THNAM). THe Chineses call it " Wood wine" . The Silex, used to polish wood furniture is the Methylic alcohol, so it's deadly toxic.

I am assuming that the rice wine was tainted with weed killer that instantly effected the drinkers and not necessary the undiluted rice wine. Though it say that improper undiluted rice wine can have a deadly effect instantly. If that was the case why take the chance with such deadly brew?

I remember my father distill rice liquor, I never knew that you could make wine with rice. maybe it was rice wine he made instead of liquor. I like to eat the ripe batter best during the fermentation stage, never took drinking the stuff.

Well, I know so well that the moonshine those farmer have drunk will usually tainted with Herbicide including Grammoxone because the brewers believe that teh herbicide will give moonshine even more and bettere kick than moonshine with pure Ethyle alcohol.

Methyl alcohol in the moonshine? Possible for even cheaper deal - to add more kick despite of the real anger ahead.
