This 123-year-old makeup company could well be a barometer of the global economy. In Avon's second-quarter results, Jung noted that, while U.S. sales had declined 8%, revenues were up 15% in Latin America, 32% in Turkey and 94% in South Africa. But the impressive numbers are also a tribute to Jung's deft navigation of the economic turbulence: This year she completed two acquisitions--Avon's first since the 1990s--and invested millions in advertising. Her reward? A paycheck of $9.5 million for 2009. Getting Avon's name and brand out there are key, since that attracts new saleswomen, who bring in more cash. Like the sales force, women are power players on the Avon board; there are five female board members, more than any other large public company.
