PHNOM PENH — A Cambodian court has sentenced a former Buddhist monk to 17 years in jail for secretly filming two teenage girls as they bathed naked at a temple, a prosecutor said Friday.
Net Khai, 37, was arrested and stripped of his religious status in June for allegedly taping more than 600 women pouring sacred water over themselves and then sharing the footage via mobile phones.
Since then several women have come forward to press charges, including two who were under the age of 18 at the time of filming.
A Phnom Penh court on Thursday handed the ex-monk the jail term for producing and distributing pornography of two underage girls, prosecutor Plang Sophal told AFP.
The court also ordered Net Khai to pay 50 million riel (11,800 dollars) in compensation to each of the two victims.
"The sentence will serve as a key message to educate both ordinary and religious people in our society to stay away from such activities," the prosecutor said.
Net Khai already received a one-year sentence last month for producing and distributing pornography in a case involving a 23-year-old victim.
He is expected to face at least one further lawsuit.
Buddhist monks are revered in Cambodia, where Buddhists make up more than 90 percent of the population.
There are more than 55,000 monks across the country, which has 4,300 temple complexes.

Plus these stupid women got what they asked for. Who the hell go and strip off their clothes in the temple? Who knows, they're probably in it with the monk. I've been to many temples here in Cambodia and not once did I have the holy water poured on me "NAKED." If they're stupid enough to do it, then they let them be.

This is too harsh of a sentence.
Please reduce it to a max 2 or 3 years, not 17 years!
The court will ruin this man's life forever.
He only made a mistake during his almost mid-life age as he probably never had any encounter with women when he was younger due to his priesthood.

when I was in Cambodia, I saw one of the video clips and he told me that the monk took them while under his direction for his blessing. I am in discussed. This is why monks are now have not much respect for the people. this monks punished severely- like lashing him continuosly. for making bad name for Buddhism.

This punishment is unfit for the crime.
This shows the backwardness of Khmer justice system where whims rules the court and not logic and rule of law.
This kind of behavior should get min. 3 years and max 5 years. 17 years should be reserved for killers, and treasons like Hun Sen, Heng Samrin, Chea Sim, Hor Nam Hong, Xok An, and these criminals.
