Khmer Surin seek Khmer language teachers from Cambodia

Mr. Chey Mongkol indicated that the search for Khmer language teachers in Surin, as reported in the following RFA article, was initiated by Mr. Moeung Son, most likely with some ulterior motive. Mr. Chey Mongkol provided the following clarification:

I have a problem with Moeung Sonn, and now he comes to Surin to organize the villagers of Phum Svay to form the Association. He works with Mr.Chakri of Thai-Khmer association. Not just that, he has invited many people in Surin that he knows the day that he has visited the school where I have taught last month.

I told him not to form any organization, and it is because he is not a Thai nationale, and secondly, he will make people confusing, and most of the Thai authority may suspect about our intention. I never think about reunification of the Khmer at all. I just want to protect and to promote Khmer culture in Surin.

What he does will have an unknown effect on his life because we all know that, he is a fugitive, although he is a French nationale, but at least if Thai authority is concerned, he may not be able to enter Thailand again. That is bad for his business. He is now in Aranyaprathet, and he will come to Surin this Thursday and the meeting with the villagers of Phum Svay will be held on Friday at 4 p.m.

Sincerely,

Cheymongkol

A group of intellectuals from Surin province, Thailand, who know how to read and write Khmer still, indicated that they plan to meet with Cambodian officials in Oddar Meanchey province and with education officials from Siem Reap province to seek Khmer language teachers to teach Khmer language to Thai citizens of Cambodian origin in Surin province.

A number of Thai associations led by intellectuals and Buddhist monks who still speak Khmer came to meet with Cambodian NGOs in Surin province, Thailand, on Friday 08 October, to seek help in finding several Khmer language teachers needed in Thailand for teaching Khmer to numerous Thai citizens [of Cambodian origin] living in Surin province.

Bunroeun Kuchma, the chief-planner for the education of Khmer language in Surin, Thailand, said by phone that, right now, the plan for teaching Khmer language has started and he is organizing Khmer language classes for levels 1, 2 and 3. Some teachers who are Thai citizens will constitute the core group, and they are brought in to learn Khmer language so that they can go back and teach the children along various schools. “The plan has reached a point of relationship with Cambodia. On 11 October, I will travel to meet the Cambodian provincial governor in Oddar Meanchey in order to set a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) so that we can ask for teachers from Oddar Meanchey to come and help teach Khmer language in Surin. It’s not just Oddar Meanchey, I will also travel to Siem Reap and meet the provincial education department in order to establish a language and cultural relationship as well.”

Chakry Sithi Sotharanun, the chairman of the Cambodia-Thai friendship association in Surin, indicated that the majority of Thai citizens living in Surin province are descendants of Cambodians who still know how to speak Khmer but do not know how to write it. He said that he wants to see them being able to write in Khmer again in order to improve their relationships with Cambodia, with the aim of better art and cultural exchange. Chakry indicated that the initiation of the Khmer language education in Surin is a goal of the Thai government to support Surin people to learn languages from the ASEAN community.

Nevertheless, Cambodian officials have not made any decision yet on how to reply to the Thai association from Surin which needs Khmer language teaching help.

Ong Vorn, the Oddar Meanchey deputy provincial governor, said that he knew about the Thai association in Surin asking for teachers from his province to help teach Khmer language, but that the decision cannot be made at his level: “If the teachers volunteer unofficially, then it can be done, but if official teachers [have to go], then the decision has to come from the ministry of Education and it also involves the ministry of Foreign Affairs as well. They need to contact us first, and then we will ask for opinion [from the Cambodian government], we cannot allow the teachers to go just like that.”

The Cambodia-based Foundation to Support Khmer Civilization was the first to reply to the needs of the Thai association in Surin. The foundation indicated that it had sent one of its employees to Surin province already in order to help teach Khmer language to Thai teachers so that the latter can in turn teach other Thai students.

In this case I think that we need rather volunteers with good level of Khmer literature. Come on we are at least 5 millions capable of doing this job. This is a noble cause one that we, Khmer should help our compatriots overthere.

I agree with you that English is important, but forgetting one own culture or language is losing one own civilization. Without a civilization is exactly what happens to Khmers in Thailand. Be whon we are first, then other things cam come next. just my thought.

Sure our ancestors of the Khmer Empire knew well Sanskrit, but not the English Language. They were not able to advise us sister to learn the English and of course the youn Languages.
Instead of giving a good constructive critic, you used your time to blame other Khmers. Of course most of our oversea's Khmer still speak and upgrade our Khmer language by our own way.

9:51,
Youn is only in Windows O.S because there are large Vietnamese software developer. They have a technical resource and know how, which are really stunted in Cambodia especially under Mr. Hun Sen's regime. Once Khmer IT get up to speed we can also have a lot of Softwares in Khmer.

By the way, Windows O.S also have a Khmer version. I have the Khmer XP.

Learning English is a must for a global communication, however, learning your native tongue is an obligation and also imperative to preserving your identity in this deeply globalization world. Those who fail to see the importance of their own culture will be sold off by others as subcultures and put to be display without dignity and respect to their own heritage.

Not only is learning Khmer important for Khmer Surin in their preservation of Khmer heritage, but it is also important for their country Thailand as it hopes to build better relationship with Cambodia. It is crucial both at national and international level in that respect.

Message from Cheymongkol :

Dear All,
This ad is not my ad and is not ad from Supporting Khmer Surin Committee, Inc. in USA either.
It is made by SONN MOEUNG and his group. Sonn Moeung has been sentenced by Royal Government of Cambodia to 2 years. He admitted his wrong doing. Listen to RFA on Friday morning Oct 8, 2010 by Mr. Kem Sos.

I would like to let you know the following actions from my side.

1. Monday afternoon I will make a press statement regarding the news that drag me into their web.
2. I see that they intentionally want to destroy my effort by putting my photos instead of the photo of their meeting at Phum Svay
3. I stand firm on Thailand's Constitution 2550, and other international treaties regarding the indigenous people
4. I will write the letter to the governor of Surin province to tell him about this action led by Mr.Moeung Sonn and his group

Sincerely,
Cheymongkol

Ong Vorn, the Oddar Meanchey deputy provincial governor must be very carefull about Sonn Moeung. His group is not with Mr. Cheymongkol. Sonn Moeung wants to destroy Cheymongkol reputation who has been working hard since 2006 for Teaching Khmer and Preserving Khmer Culture in Surin Area.

You are very bad person, Sonn Moeung. You still have problem inside Cambodia. Now you come to Surin to create more trouble. You are a trouble maker.

What is wrong to you, Sonn Moeung ?

should interview with Cheymongkol to make a correction your broadcast and ad in KI.

Dear Mr. Sonn Moeung,

I do not know that you are still in Thailand until I receive your email.

I am worried about what you are doing at border area. I know that you are working hard to find the way to sell you real estate in Cambodia. I wish you can make it as soon as possible.

As I have seen, besides finding the way to sell your property in Cambodia, you also is trying to associate with other Khmers in SURIN to do some thing which is not related to your real estate. For the true interest of Teaching Khmer and Preserving Khmer culture in Surin, I think you should focus on solving your personal problem first.

I am writing this email to share my thought with you. If you think we have the same idea, I wish you should stay away from the border area and keep yourself in low profile in order to sell your real estate as soon as possible.

As I discuss with you, I stay away from politic in order to concentrate on helping Mr. Cheymongkol and his friends to implement his non-profit organization policy as well as mine.

By listening RFA on Friday morning Oct 8, Sonn Moeung admitted that he asked Royal Govrnment of Cambodia to fogive him. But Royal Government of Cambodia did not accept his apologie.

Sonn Moeung should apolozige to Cheymongkol, too for making Khmers in Surin as well as outside Surin confusing about Teaching Khmer and Preserving Khmer Culture in Surin.

khmer surin should send some of their students of the khmer language to study at university in cambodia, so they can gain much needed khmer language skills and teaching method to take back to surin, etc to help teach and promote khmer language and culture there to indigenous khmer people in issan. khmer language is real easy to learn, especially if you are native or of khmer origin. yes, like any languages of the world, start with the very basic or rudimental lesson, and practices do make it perfect like anything out there. god bless the beautiful khmer language, culture, etc...

of course, english is an important international language of business, aviation, etc; and so is our beautiful khmer language! know both really well i.e. khmer and english. can't forget khmer language, you know!
