Life as usual in the Kingdoom of Chek Snap Mouk (aka Banana)

(Photo: Everyday.com.kh)

A row of beggars are lining up the staircase to Phnom Athroeus in Oudong.

Should these beggars be ashamed of their action?

We don't think so! It is the government of Cambodia and their leaders who should be ashamed for not taking care of their citizens.

Shame on you King, Princes, Princesses, Prime Minister, Ek Ouddams, Chumteavs, Oknhas etc... for not seeing the plight of your citizens!

Please be in place of these elderly people. Govt., please help these people. Give enough dignity and compassion toward the people that you suppose to be governce.

See people with your heart, not just your eyes. Give them your kindness and share their hardship...one of these elders could be your mother!

If you people keep voting for CPP , the begging will continue forever.

This comment is the very usual response from a person who is Tuorl Jrork (means s/he has been cornered and has no way to give any reasonable answer). The writer answers exactly the same to the responses from the ruling party officials or even HS when shameful situation being thrown to them for answers.

Please don't blame our country Cambodia. We are still rebuilding our destroyed country from the war from 70 to 90. Of course we sure have a lot of social problem, but please have more understanding of these situation.
Right, Cambodia did their own way to beggar, but others countries did different way.
How about the people, who are living in some modern countries of the world, they live from the taxpayer or from welfare ?
Are you able to call them beggars ?

CPP .... PP said...

HUN SEN & HIS WIFE WERE ONCE A BEGGAR... HOW CAN THEY FORGOT THIER ROOT AS A BEGGARS.

HUN SEN CAN'T SOLVE NO PROBLEM, HE STILL BEGGING VIET NAM TO SOLVE PROBLEM.

CPP ....ANTI - HUNSEN.

Though Hun Sen and CPP can do a lot to improve the lives of Cambodians, still I doubt if these people will ever stop begging.

I'm told Khmer from Svay Reing love to beg. It seems they have no shame.

The deeper problem with these beggars is the psychological issue. They feel helpless to make the needed change to affect their circumstance. Also, there are healthy people I have seen who just feel no shame begging, even though they physically fit to work.

I am oversea Cambodian. When I travel to Cambodia I seldom give out anything because I feel I would perpetuate this begging culture.

It is always convenient to blame the whole madness of Cambodia's many illnesses on Hun Sen. I don't like Hun Sen, but this blame is getting old.

Khmers like to blame everything on everyone else. In the past, they blame the Chinese, then they blame the Thais and now they blame the Youns and their leaders for all the misfortunes that they face every day. One thing they should have done which they didn't do is to blame themselves. For the able individuals, if you have two hands and two legs, can't you do something else other than begging to feed yourselves? In Cambodia, you see a lot of these beggers. I was told that they work in the farm during the rainy season and beg during the dry season. So, to them, begging is like a second career. So, you can blame Hun San and everyone else but that doesn't change a thing. If you look closely at other athnic groups in Cambodia, a majority of these people are doing very good economically.

4:02PM,

If I were HS, I would ban these people from begging. It's a disgrace to the country. These folks don't want to work and only look for an easy way to make money even it means selling their dignity!

KI-Media loves to post pictures like these so they can rally people to blame Hun Sen/CPP for ALL Cambodian problems.

Look at all curse comments above direct at Hun Sen.

Cambodians biggest problem is not Hun Sen, but Cambodian mindset.

I realize under Hun Sen/CPP life can be hard. But I do believe if a person have an industrious attitude toward work he/she can carve out a decent living even under the less than ideal condition under the current leaders.

KI's view of the world

If there's any thing wrong in Cambodia, it got to be HS's faults.

I feel really sorry that KI has reached that state of mindset.

These grandmas beg then give it to the monks, who in turn use the monies to build/decorate temples.

We got to love Cambodian culture of begging. Monks beg (or som ben), grandmas beg, little child beg.

This is what keep Cambodia economy moving.

ASEAN facts:

Singapore has the highest ethnic Chinese per capita.

Indonesia/Malaysia have the highest Muslims per capita.

Thailand has the highest transvestites per capita.

Cambodia has the highest beggars per capita.

If I tell you that some of the beggars have cell phones. Do you believe me or not but is is true.

Every countries have beggars, but the different amounts are least and a lot of beggars.Thirty years under Hun Sen govt,Khmer people get poorer and poorer but Hun Sen and his clans get richer and richer.Hun Sen must solve both helping the poor people and building the economy. The rich people must stay the same levels when the poor people get their lives better and better. This is what we call the social justice in society in Cambodia.Hun Sen and his clans do not do so because he is a greedy and hungry power all the rest of his life.Hun Sen wants his people to be poor, sick,or starve to death so can Vietnam govt send her own people to live happily in a new Champa after Khmer Krom. How stupid Sihanouk and Hun Sen along with his clans.Look at these beggars are not ashamed because their govt also a beggar. The followers follow the leader who beg the aid from abroad to put in his own budgets.

I don't think The beggars problem has to do with the government. When I look at that picture it look like they are healty to me and they are older people and AT THE TEMPLE!!!!!

Some very very clever people on this blog decides that to solve the problem of poverty all you have to do is to ban people from begging, and so preserve some "dignity" for the nation LOL! HOW RETARDED CAN YOU CLEVER PEOPLE BE? why doesn't it cross your mind that this is the humble buddhist way of living set out by none other than your own Samanak Gautam?

Anonymous said...

6:12AM,

Buddha may have chosen the humble way of life to beg. This humble way is practice by the monks.

Now this humble way of life is permeates into a wider Cambodian culture where begging is acceptable and perfectly normal.

No need to go work. Wake up in the morning just grab a bucket and just go sit by the side of the road and beg. Why waste time to expense energy, use creativity, and human ingenuity to make a living like everyone else? Forget about self respect and dignity, just beg, beg, and beg.

Now I understand why Cambodia is at the bottom among ASEAN countries.

By the way, in the US many Cambodians beg too in the form of gov't assistance call food stamp.

I hate hearing those who say Cambodia is poor because of war or Pol Pot. Please open ur eyes and see some countries which have similar experience to our country. I strongly blame the current stupid RGC. They almost do nothing to develop Cambodia. Of course, they do in very bad way and stupid way. I trust this blind government can't bring Cambodia development, but destruction everything during this stupid regime. I hate seeing such stupid government. Sometimes, I almost vomit to hear HUN SEN saying good about his stupid government. Crazy men of RGC.

7:44AM your claim that in buddhist thinking work = dignity is untrue; everything in buddhism points to the contrary i.e. avoid work, save yourself by shaving your head and pick up a begging bowl, live on the mercy of others.. that's how you achieve preah nippeanbott.
