A prominant workers' union in Cambodia has threatened further strikes unless their suspended unionists are reinstated and a current minimum wage dispute is resolved.
The Coalition of Cambodian Apparel Workers Democratic Union (CCAWDU), who led mass garment strikes last month, is ready for another nationwide stoppage.
The Cambodian Ministry of Social Affairs has asked the union not to start new strikes and give them more time to resolve the dispute.
Ek Sopheakdey, secretary general of CCAWDU, said further strikes could start by the end of this month though.
“We will do the strikes in front of stores and clothing shops, and we will announce to the world that garment factories in Cambodia abuse workers’ rights,” he said.
Up to now, 94 unionists and 683 workers remain suspended and dismissed because of their participation in last month's strikes. The Garment Manufacturers Association in Cambodia (GMAC) says the numbers are smaller though - at 67 unionist and 358 workers.
The GMAC has warned that the new stoppages will threaten the future of the garment industry and that foreign buyers and investors could leave the country.
In the first nine months of 2010, Cambodia's textile and garment exports reached US$2.27bn, representing a year-on year increase of 17%.
“The impacts of the strike will only be seen in the October data or later," Ken Loo, secretary general of the GMAC added.

But if Raisy you are dumb don't do it no one want to share with flaw fool like you any way. keep doing what you are been doing is not work any more. You need to hire new manager to manage your mess. But as a Khmer I have observed your activities closely.
I agree , you have done a lot for the poor, powerless Khmer people , such as stood up for democracy in late 1997. Led huge peacefull demonstration against election cheating in 1998,Stood up for Khmer people at Dey Kraham, especially border issue in 2009.
And I am sure if Mrs. Hillary Clinton intervene for your returning , of course you can come back for sure,No doubt about it.
Election in domcratic country is very vital. But election in Cambodia is not it all about Ho Chi Minh Indochina Federation.
But the problem is if you need to change your tactics. if you keeping joining the upcoming 2013 national election you will lose again and again not because of most Khmer voted for Hun Sen , most Khmer never vote for Hun Sen look back at 1993 election under UN supervision , Ranarridh won , but Rannrridh betrayed Khmer who voted for him , Ranarrid betrayed his own fighters from the Thai borders.
To me we cannot compare you ( nationalist ) to Ranariddh a national traitor.
The real danger of our poor nation is Viet Congs in Khmer civilian uniforms, Viet Congs in Hun Sen polices, solders, MP uniforms everywhere in our country.
Look at 5 millions of illegal Yuon living in Cambodia ready to vote for Hun Sen again and again to legitimize Hun Sen regime as they have done in the past and they will do again in this coming up 2013 election.
Please sit down and talk with others nationalist to boycott this 2013 election or it come up with better strategy.
Khmer need people like you Mr. Sam Rains, Mr. Suoun Sophorn especially our poor and powerless people everywhere in our country.
