On the Koh Pich Tragedy and the "Do Little Administration"

Thursday, November 25, 2010
Opinion by Khmer Singapore posted on KI-Media

People who have lost their love ones can weep, cry, screem, yelling, pull hairs out, or walk up to Chroychangvar japanese built bridge to commit suicide.

However, the fact of this matter is the rotten culture of gross negligence and incompetence of the authority which undeniably and evidently is there to stay for a long haul. So Cambodian people, brace yourselves to live with these shortsighted laggers to make your lives more dramatic.

We all know that this huge incident involving hundreds of people death or even thousands does not happen only in Cambodia, and One can legitimate make argument about this fact.

However, the point is that when you pull the string of fatal events (small or big): 6 Singaporean youths drowned in boat race several years ago and put together; incapable of managing even tiny road trafffic, then you wonder why this tragedy of such magnitude can easily happen under their nose.

There is nothing we can do when life was lost but the question remains unanswer and perhaps it never will.

Building Stupa serves only a symbol of memory and relatively and culturally to commemorate to the death. It plays well to the belief of some, but it does not solve the big messy fundamental issue that this Government falls asleep in their own swift grip.

Cambodian people now and in the future desire and demand to have more compentent, much smarter organizers and forward looking officials in this Do Little Administration.

Good comment. Yes, that's right, I forgot that not long ago, some Singaporean boat racers also died drowning. What a short memory !

But incompetence and carefree attitude has always been in Khmer political psyche. This latest event has made the steeply superstition-inclined Khmer people into their traditional fatalism even more.

Only hard work, demoracy and rule of law can help pull out Cambodia of this abyss. No more excuses thrown at long dead Pol Pot, foreigners, recenlty-got-out-of-wars, and opposition.

This insidence should be view as the signal to Khmer people that this is the price of Khmer people have to pay with their life. This is the cost of electing incompetant, lack of vision, lack of planning, lack of managing, lack of understanding of cost and benefit at the national level in short term vs long term of government into office. This govt. is running the country as an organize crime back up by the institution that they creat to serve their own groups. The wealth and benefit to triggle down to the interest of the nation and her people is far too little in between....hope that Khmer people will learn from this and should elect the govt. that will serve their interest first rather their own clants in the next election...

Another correct comment, thanks. I see more and more young people must learn to take Cambodia and its future into hand. That is to say they must participate in the political process to change things.

Khmer people will never elect a different government simply because with the bebief that if Hun San loses the election, he will declare war. People are understandably afraid of another war.

Yes 7:27 am - you are right! I heard this too when I was in Cambodia. They afraid that if they don't elect HS - he will use his military to fight for his position!

Now it shows how dictatorship rule his country and his people.

under this regime, govt officers and all leaders are naive and carefree. Hun Sen has no where to go, they are very limited understanding life. all these incompetency and corruption is eroding cambodia all walk of lives and eventually lead to this kind of tragedy. just waiting for time, cambodia and cambodian are going to die

I greed with you that the way the govt. lead Cambodian rights now, it will lead to self distruction!!

This event must be a wake up call to all Kaun Khmers within the country that have the rights to elect the govt. You better show your power in 2013 - show the govt. that the power is in your hands....elect HS govt. out!

I am very excited to see all of the above comments have the excellent ideas, in the right direction; if all Khmer brother and sisters have the same good ideas as you all do, one day we will see our Khmer citizen, our children, live in the independent, prosperous and safe place like the other people in the developed countries, in the world, for sure.

9:01 am - you rights - if all of us Koun Khmers dick deep into our soul and spirit, we will realize of what it is rights and what it is wronge for our nations. If we to have a better future for our children and our children's children, Hun Sen's govt. should not be re-elect back into office in 2013. We need a better leader that has clear vision for our country future, mission to follow with action, and transparency to all people that the govt. suppose to serve.

I remember from my Moto Dop person - he said that he is willing to pay tax to govt. as long as the govt. would not abuse the tax policy to put him out of business. What the Moto dop had showed was that he was willing to contribute event his little money that he get to help with the govt. budge. This Moto dop person - he has Koun Khmer's heart. He want to be a part to rebuild the country. The only thing that he had ask from govt. is to provice a save environment for him to conduct his self employ...

Government officials and all media controlled by CPP tried to hide another cause of the death:
ELECTRICUTE by the bridge wires.
The fact finding commission must be independent, committee members who handed pick by the government could NOT find out the true cause of the death. Its finding result will be manipulated as the case of the Chea Vichea killing.

As the first report by Channel NewsAsia and the interview of the injured people by Phnom Penh Post Newspaper, the electrocute on the bridge caused the stampede.
The death of more than 450 people could not be justified by the stampede only on 7 meters wide and 100 meters long bridge. A doctor at Calmette Hospital who refused to give his name said most the death from suffixation and electrocute. Also, during this mayhem there were reports of turning off the lights on the bridge.
It's a great insult to the death and injured people by denying the electrical shock factor.

Blaming only on the stampede, Koh Pich Company who owned by relatives of the powerful and pro-CPP tycoon, will not be liable for this disaster.
Suing or prosecuting the rich, the powerful and the tycoon in Cambodia is out of question, but if we could not find the real cause, we never could fix the problem.
This was a man made tragedy, not a natural disaster.
Please find out the truth so we could really learn from it, and all the death can rest in peace.

Your Majesty Samdech Ta former King Norodom Sihanouk,

Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen,

Thank you for your both kindness and understanding.
What we need is prevention methods, not to let this type of accident happen again in the future.

It also makes me very worried to see so much alcohol allowed to enter or be produced in our beloved Kingdom of Cambodia? What about “ YA BA “ and other types of DRUGS from Thailand and Vietnam?

Can His Majesty Samdech Ta and Samdech Hun Sen stop all sorts of drugs coming to Cambodia? The accident may not be related to drugs and alcohol but just some thing that I could not sleep peacefully from now on to the future, in the names sake of true Khmer citizen.

Can Samdech Hun Sen kindly ask all 5 million Vietnamese illegal immigrants to peacefully return to Vietnam, so Koh Pich will not be too crowded more and more every day, every month and every year to come.
All Vietnamese illegal immigrants can easily come in and settle inside Cambodia even though they already have their own country Vietnam.

When Cambodia is too crowded, definitely we Khmer people can not go to settle inside Vietnam, can we?
Please Vietnamese, you said you came to rescue us from Pol Pot, and you don’t want to return home, it is not right according to 23rd October 1991 Paris Peace Agreement, can all of you go back to your country now.

Vietnamese illegal immigrants, you see because 5 million of you are inside Cambodia, it makes us too crowded and we wasted our lives at Koh Pich without good reasons.

Your Vietnamese Communism expansionist mind in Cambodia, is to give an excuse to China mainland to occupy your Spratly Islands, Parcel Islands, the whole of your Eastern sea border and perhaps the Northern border sooner or later.

5 million Vietnamese illegal immigrants in Cambodia, please go back home to defend your country from Chinese mighty economic invasion.

May I pray to God and the Lord Jesus Christ that those who have lost loved one will be comforted.

My condolences to all the victim's family.

Regards,

Kulen Monorom

Ma yarith is changed from the last 12 years when he worked for radio free Asia or VOA. He does event analysis on ctn(the state control media) with chum kosal. He takes side with gov. and he is not neutral any more. A lot of Khmer are like that, they are for their own benefit and money and not care about county. What Cambodian future will be?
