Sydney - US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Sunday that the people of Myanmar 'deserve much better' than this weekend's 'deeply flawed' election.

Clinton, speaking in Australia at the end of her two-week Asia-Pacific tour, told a gathering of university students in Melbourne that the first voting in Myanmar in two decades would 'once again expose the abuses of the military junta.'

The Myanmar polls opened earlier Sunday.

Clinton, on her first visit to Australia as secretary of state, previously visited Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea and New Zealand.

'We hope that perhaps out of these elections some leaders will emerge who know that Burma (Myanmar) has to take a different track and cannot continue to do the same thing and realize the potential of their people,' she said.

On Monday Clinton will conclude her regional tour at talks that will bring her together with US Defence Secretary Robert Gates, his Australian counterpart Stephen Smith and Australian Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd.
