A local Cambodian NGO has said it would distribute 5,000 books designed to increase awareness of laws and services related to rights for women and children in a bid to improve gender equality and reduce domestic violence.

Chim Manavy, executive director of the Open Institute, said during a launch in Phnom Penh that the 210-page “Women Guide Book” would be especially useful for women in remote areas who may not be aware of available support services.

The book is set to be distributed to female community representatives nationwide and includes information and contact details for government and NGO services including legal aid, reproductive health and local officials.

The book, which is also aimed at informing local authorities, explains that domestic violence is illegal and that officials have a right and duty to intervene to protect victims.

Ing Kantha Phavi, Minister of Women Affairs, said domestic violence is in part caused by gender inequality and that the guide book will enable women to “be more empowered” to know and demand their rights.

She added, however, that about 40 percent of Cambodian women are illiterate and that the impact of the book would rely in part on local authorities helping to disseminate the information.

The Respect of Women Rights.
In the first century, it was important and common for Khmer women to be respected by Khmer men. The level of respect towards women were extremely significant, they had selected a woman as their leader; her name was Preah Neang Soma (meaning daughter of the moon), QUEEN of FUNAN. Her unique beauty, intelligence, strong combative leadership are a few of her many exquisite qualities to win the Funan people’s loyalty and respect.
A few hundred years later; men and women had decided to complete against each other to see who can build the tallest mountain out of soil. To ensure the competition was fair, each team would need to create it far from each other. Also, if they completed the task first, they must light the torch to signify their accomplishment. As a reward, the winning party would have control of the losing party’s marriage arrangement. In this case, the delicate and gentle women used their clever intelligence rather than their physical energy to win. This challenge had taught men to value women more respectively as their equal.
Khmer men should continue to respect women because they are our grandmothers, mothers, sisters, wives, and daughters.
