Cambodia: Release from jail of a "Prisoner of Conscience"

December 14, 2010

RELEASE FROM JAIL OF A "PRISONER OF CONSCIENCE"

A group of Members of Parliament from the opposition SRP will travel to the Kampong Thom provincial court on December 15, 2010 in order to monitor the implementation of the royal pardon decree for Mr. Tuot Saron, a former commune chief from the SRP of Pong Ro commune, Baray district, Kampong Thom province, who has been detained for nearly three years.

Mr. Tuot Saron was arrested by the provincial authority on March 18, 2008 on "illegal confinement" charge and he was sentenced to three years in jail by the Kompong Thom provincial court, in what independent observers called a politically motivated trial.

Mr. Tuot Saron was declared earlier this year a "Prisoner of Conscience"by Amnesty International and was granted effective amnesty by King Norodom Sihamoni on November 26, 2010. He, however, wasn't released because the court ordered him to pay a "compensation" of 2.500.000 riels.
