PHNOM PENH — Cambodian Prince Norodom Ranariddh returned to politics Saturday with a vow to reinvigorate the flagging royalist movement, taking the helm of his former party which has re-adopted his name.
Two years after quitting politics, Prince Ranariddh, who was Cambodia's first elected prime minister in 1993 after years of civil war, was re-instated as president of the party he created during a meeting in the capital.
Party members also agreed to re-name the Nationalist Party the Norodom Ranariddh Party (NRP).
The 66-year-old son of former king Norodom Sihanouk said in a speech that he was returning to politics to re-unite royalists ahead of 2012 local elections and a 2013 general election.
"I have seen that the royalists are hopeless, separated, I want them to be one family," he said.
Ranariddh called for an alliance with fellow royalist party Funcinpec, with him as leader.
"The prince wants to create a new party called Funcinpec 81 before 2012," party spokesman Pen Sangha told AFP. "The ball is now in the court of Funcinpec."
Ranariddh has been off the political scene since late 2008, when he said he was quitting the opposition after receiving a royal pardon on fraud charges and returning from self-imposed exile in Malaysia.
The prince's political career had begun with great promise when he won Cambodia's UN-sponsored election in 1993 as head of the royalist Funcinpec party.
However, he was forced to accept Hun Sen as co-prime minister, who then staged a coup in 1997.
In following elections, Ranariddh's voter appeal diminished as he entered into coalition agreements with Hun Sen's ruling Cambodian People's Party.
In 2006, he was ejected from Funcinpec over fraud allegations involving the illegal sale of the party's headquarters. He formed the NRP shortly afterwards.
The prince was sentenced in absentia to 18 months in jail over the fraud charges the following year but was later pardoned.
The NRP won just two parliamentary seats in Cambodia's 2008 general election, as did Funcinpec. The NRP then changed its name to the Nationalist Party.
Both parties have in the past expressed an interest in merging to improve the royalist movement's flagging fortunes.
Hun Sen warned the prince earlier this week that if he was coming back to politics, he would not be able to stay on as an adviser to Cambodia's King Norodom Sihamoni, Ranariddh's half-brother.

This time he must make his best (but don't make the best of Khmer compatriots by being disloyal to them as he was last time. Nonetheless, hope for him to win as he did, is really up in the air.

in a true democracy, anyone can participate in the national election if they qualified, however, winning is another topic. whether the individual(s) can win or not depends on the votes, i believe! keep in mind, that if royal member want to participate in politics, don't expect anymore double standard for royal in politics, meaning you get criticized the same way other get criticized by their political opponents and the public in general. no special standard, that's democracy!
the question is: is it against the law for the prince to participate i politics? is there law that says royal members should not be in active politics, now? i think only the argument pointing to the law that prohibits such participate would be taken into consideration in the court of law, etc...
in regards to the spouse, if a person is legally divorced, then the new spouse is official as well. it all has to do with abiding by the law, really!
It's not about anyone's right to participate in politics in a democracy, BUT it is about someone's true political committment and worth that could affect the process. NR will again prove to be a distraction than useful participant...
I don't like the way these politician use their own names for their politcal parties. It sounds like he alone owns it. Why is it so hard for them to find a proper name for their political parties? Right here in Long Beach, there's a brand-new political party name "Khmer Chhub Kro"? How does it sound to your ears, folks?

me personally, i don't care who run in the election as long as they are qualified by the law of cambodia. and also, if a person or individual(s) reformed, then more power to them all. it is the one that don't want to reform is the one cambodia don't want, really! reformed, whether people, the system, etc is always good for the country, i think!
maybe the prince is not serious. it's more like a distraction, like testing the democracy water, or something. you know how it is in politics! however, i think in the new era of cambodia, people will criticize and see to it, khmer people won't let their leaders be irresponsible any longer like in the past. now, if politicians did something wrong or illegal, the people and citizens of cambodia will sure to question them in the media and on television, etc; i don't think they can get away like in the past again. yes people want leaders to be responsible and accountable in everything decision, and everything they do from now on in cambodia. that's the way it should be! if can't handle the pressure, the stress, etc, then the people and citizens must show them the door or the exit, in other word, resign! and remind them that their political position is not permanent anymore in the new cambodia, ok!

He has the right to come back to politics but , he couldnt do anything while he was the first Prime Minister , he couldn't do anything while he was the President of the National Assembly and now he wants to come back ? Most of his supporters had been defected to CPP because they didn't trust him . I think he still remember that .
He has a strong support from his Party but not from voters because they had enough of him . If majority of voters still liked him he wouldn't lose the election . He couldn't even beat the HRP leads by Kem Sokha.
