Phnom Penh - Cambodian police have charged a Japanese photographer with pornography after they claimed he took pictures of sex workers in the tourist city of Siem Reap, local media reported Friday.

Go Takayama, a 28-year-old participant in a workshop at the Angkor Photo Festival, was arrested in late November and charged Thursday.

He faces up to one year in prison, said Siem Reap provincial prosecutor Ty Soveinthal.

'Making or publishing pornographic pictures is absolutely prohibited in Cambodia and is in violation of Cambodian law, so the court will make a decision on this next week,' Ty Soveinthal told the Phnom Penh Post newspaper.

The police said he had taken dozens of photographs of sex workers at a brothel in the city.

However Jessica Lim, who helped to coordinate the festival, said Takayama had not sought out sex workers, adding that the photographs depicted a married couple and contained no naked images.

She said Takayama was arrested immediately after leaving the building where the shoot of the couple had taken place.

'The couple, in some of the pictures, they're posing next to each other, as in a portrait shot, and in others they're standing there hugging each other,' she said.

'There's absolutely no nudity,' she said, adding that she had seen thumbnail shots of the images taken.

Takayama's photographs were taken as part of his involvement in a workshop at the week-long festival, which closed on November 27.

It remained unclear whether the charges could relate to different pictures Takayama may have shot at another time.

To KI: that last sentence should be in italic red as well, if you want to make the all the info balanced. I used to talked to police officers (yes, sure only some officers that I met) who was working to ban pornography, and I found that they do know what the hell is going on regarding this sex permissiveness.

I cannot judge by these few lines in the news if that Japanese guy's photos contains nudity of Khmer girls (or women) or not, but frankly to say, this news is not really new since it coincides with Japanese; a normal Japanese guy wouldn't find this act of taking nude pictures wrong, and most Japanese guys would do the same only if they have chance to. The permissiveness of pornography has already reached a highly harmful degree already.

This man was arrested only so that police can extract money out of him. The pictures had no nudity so I don't really understand their definition of pornography. If they want to talk about pornography and arrest people then they should arrest all the video shops along Psar Thmey, and Chorsok Paem road. That is where a lot of the prostitution happens and mostly youen. And thats where a lot of sex videos are sold.

The police will come up with any charge only to get money!

Come on!
Are you children?

This Japanese man will be free the next days and on his fly back to Japan.

Its ALWAYS like this as the Japanese People (and Government) help each other if somebody has a problem.

This is different for Khmer People who do not care of each other so if any Khmer Person has problem in Thailand or other place NO Khmer (or Government) will ever take care for the person.

This is the reason why foreigners are looking down on Khmer People!

Vietnamese People in USA and other countries help each other. Khmer People in USA EVEN write a complain to Police about other Khmer People.

Understand where a bad Reputation come from!!!
