Postcards from Cambodia

By C.C.

As I am visiting Cambodia, I would like to share some pictures of the scenery of our motherland with those who long to see them.
The Canadia Building and a Hummer H2 Sport Utility vehicle without license plate which uses two lanes to drive on (All Photos: Courtesy of C.C.)
Diamond (Pich) Bridge, looking from the west, where the recent tragic stampede occurred. This bridge could only be crossed from the east, as the two red X signs on overhead gate (not seen) suggested it.  The rule was enforced by the police guards who refused me permission to walk across it from the west.

A white BMW crossing the Diamond Bridge against the traffic rule.
The almost dry mouth of the Bassac River near Diamond Bridge. The picture of the floating structure on the far background was sand pumping station to fill Boeung Kak Lake.

A man casting his net under Diamond Bridge.
The Naga Casino’s Building towering over the tiny Buddhist Institute. On the far background, another twin building is being constructed near the Independence Monument.
Mr. Long Hach, a retired government planner who is now working for a private company designing swimming pool for those who could afford such luxury, shows off one of his prolific designs at a gated community in Tuol Kok to a potential client. The white strip underwater was a wall barrier to keep children from going into deeper water. I was honored to have lunch with him and listen to his passionate talk about many architectural designs of swimming pools and their forms and functions.
Children residents of the gated community take a dip in the swimming pool to cool off. Let us dream, like Martin Luther King, Jr., that one day, all Cambodian children will be able to swim in this kind of beautiful swimming pool.

One tall building in the middle of slum, river bank full of rubbish and poo, in front of the royal palace smell urine unbearable, people poo and urine on the wall no toilet provided, in market no air to breathe, on street full of dirt and dust, sewage system problem. No town planning, everyone can build everything with their money. Only a few Oknha and corruptors have a good house.

we, khmer are resilient people, now it is not so clean like US but as long as we are here to help our country, we will be able to catch up you one day.
You are fake American, you are very proud of the country that you've never built by your hand. You even insult Cambodia every day, let see how long American remain super power!!!!

Thank you for sharing these beautifully taken photos.

Pictures like these are also a form of visual commentary and contribute much to our collective understanding of society.

Personally, I think Cambodia is still one of the most beautiful countries in the world in her natural setting in spite of the current conflicts and social ills.

With a bit of effort and a sense of common good, all Cambodians (whatever their ethnic origins or political views) can live together in peace and harmony.

It is OK to drive a large expensive car, but try to observe traffic regulations in stead of taking the law into one's hand or acting above the law. The more wealth and power a person accumulates, the greater should be his/her social responsibility towards fellow citizens.

A picture is worth a thousand words.

There are many positive points from these pictures, but KI-Media chose to reflect the negative ones. I think KI-Media is negative. We see how clean our country is(compared to Paris, Montreal, New York, etc.). There are no trash on the streets and sidewalks.

KI-Media is propaganda against Cambodia. They try to brainwash us.

"we see how clean country is, compared to Paris, NY etc". Once again this statement proves that the elite, the powerful, the influential people in Cambodia have their heads buried in sand, and still manage to display a "small frog in a small pond" mentality. Would the same people dare to mention the 99.99% of NY or Paris that are clean? No, of course not, that would be too hard an act to follow. Let's just aim low so we can say that Cambodia, under the CPP achieved something- a stretch of street that is rubbish free! After 30 years of constant international aid, this is Cambodia's claim to fame- one bloody clean street! Hey, may be all those doctorates are well deserved after all.

I like 10:36 PM comment with academic view, I like the word social resposibily. And 5:12 AM also true you comment reflect the reality.

Current leader always said because of war, lack of human resources, start from zero. So how much times should we give these leaders times? just to clean our street properly they need 30 years more?, everywhere in the Kingdom full of rubbish bag, in Tonle Sap lake rubbish bag hung on trees.

Corrupt leaders are promoting tourist, except Angkor where should the tourist enjoy? every provincial town you see one you them all it all the same.

In order to attract tourist, we must have town planning, every provincial town must be unique and not monotonous
