LONG BEACH - Theary Seng survived the Killing Fields of Cambodia and emigrated to the United States, where she was in the Long Beach area while attending Valley Christian High School.

She has since earned international acclaim for her autobiography, "Daughter of the Killing Fields" and her advocacy work for human rights as founder of the Cambodian Center for Justice and Reconciliation in Phnom Penh.

When not working on her many issues, she speaks at conferences all over the world telling her story and touching on issues of justice and reconciliation, democracy, faith and human rights.

Long Beach and surrounding area residents will have the opportunity to listen in on Seng and other speakers who are part of the award-winning January Series, presented by Calvin College and simulcast locally.

A Christian school in Michigan, Calvin College has earned critical acclaim for its annual series of speakers. Since 2008, the presentations have been simulcast and are now heard in 30 locations in the U.S. and abroad.

The Bethany Christian Reformed Church in Bellflower is one of the participants and the only one in the Southland.

This year, the 24th of the series, will feature a diverse group of speakers talking about a variety of faith, ethical and social issues.

"I think (the January Series) gives exposure for some of the most prominent thinkers in many fields," said Stan Cole of Bethany Church.

The speakers include Hall of Fame baseball player Cal Ripken Jr., the Rev. Greg Boyle, founder of Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles, and Seng, who speaks Jan. 7. A total of 15 presentations will be delivered during the three-week stretch.

The January Series has received recognition for its quality and diversity of perspectives on issues of national and global importance.

The series began simulcasting to other locations in 2008 and is now shown in Canada and Europe.

Cole said the series explores often controversial issues as one of the school's goals "to challenge some long-held truisms."

Were not Theary Seng only ,during
1975 to 1979 we were at BAT DOM BONG
province special the Koh Kroh LOR
district up to Som Lut village were
get kill thousand and thousand of
peoples , and included with my families member were lost more than 25 persons , because why ?
Because very once want to replace
the regime from monarchy to republic while republic controller the country ,and the most people whom were support the
monarchy were not happy with the
republic so they had to
support the communist regime so the war took 5 yrs badly to end and too many thousand and thousand
were get kill during the war.
In 1975 communist took over 3 yrs
and 20 days were take 2 milion
of innocent life .
This is for Khmer lesson .

Cambodia has today because of Norodom Shihasnuk. The reason is at election 1993 UN ask this ex king to stay longer to make sure Hun Sen exempted the defeat but this ex king was kicked UN out as soon as possible because he tried to gain credits for himself. His mess lead Cambodians suffer until today. He must be responsible.

The Ex king and king today is not patriot at all. They are opportunistic parasite of Cambodia.

When Non Nol kicked him out of power, he was jointed with Khmer Rough to tell Khmer military drop the weapons but when Pol Pot killed Khmers. The king tried to wipe his responsible out. Ex king is no responsible for Cambodians lives that have been lost over two millions Khmer life. Khmers are so suffer today because of him. His politic make Cambodians suffer until today.

NOTE TO Sam Rainsy and KI-Media Readers.

Theary Seng, one great leader is celebrating 7 January, as she lived in the killing fields of Khmer Rouge regime.

Sam Rainsy doesn't recognize 7 January because he was in France at that time and don't know the liberation January 7 1979. Sam is only a barking dog.

The Paris Peace Accort should be celebrate...where Khmer reunited and liberate from Vietnam occupation in Khmer's land. Questions:

1.Did Vietnam really want to liberate Khmer from KR?

2. If Vietnam want to save Khmer from killing by the KR regime? If that is the case - why wait until almost 1/3 of Khmer population had been killed?

3. Isn't that Vietnamese an opportunist to wait that long so that it could take over Khmer's land and at the same time claim to save Khmer? One stone hit two birds here! Target!

Khmer people waik up...

Dear 9:21 PM, an interesting spin, but if you read Ms. Theary Seng's writings and listen to her speeches, I don't think she will be celebrating January 7, which ended one genocidal regime with another one responsible for K-5 (Bamboo Wall), anytime soon.

12:50, yes we know, at least 1.7 million lives lost, but Theary represents Cambodia well as she can articulate to both the national and international audience. We share your suffering.
