Phnom Penh - Most Cambodians believe their country is moving in the right direction, a US-funded survey has found, with respondents citing improved infrastructure such as roads, schools and clinics.
The findings were released Friday in Phnom Penh by the International Republican Institute (IRI), a US organization loosely linked to the Republican Party.
IRI country director John Willis said the 76-per-cent favourable finding was down from a peak of 82 per cent two years ago, 'but is still pretty high by worldwide standards.'
However, nearly a quarter felt Cambodia was going the wrong way, said Willis, with those who were unhappy naming corruption as their key concern, followed by jobs, poverty and inflation worries.
And more than a third of those questioned said the nation's key concern was its border issues with Thailand and Vietnam.
Cambodia is in the process of demarcating the borders with both countries, a process that in the case of Thailand has sparked violent clashes in recent years.
And farmers along the border with Vietnam have complained they are losing land to their more powerful neighbour in the process.
As most Cambodians live in rural areas and rely on subsistence agriculture, the survey also asked people about land.
It found three-quarters of the rural population owned less than 2 hectares of farmland, and most complained they lacked sufficient irrigation.
Around one in 12 rural landowners said someone had tried to take their land in the past three years, further evidence of the scourge of land-grabbing that regularly pits the powerful and well-connected against the poor.
The survey questioned a representative sample of 2,000 randomly selected Cambodians aged 18 and older in every province.

Hi Mike, i think there is nothing wrong with other medias, especially those medias support CPP to draw worse picture label on Sam. I am sure that Sam would not upset, sue to court, arrest, or kill you as like as Hoon Xen killed those journalist who criticize him. It is true Cambodia is moving in the right direction compare to Pol Pot regime.
I dont think the survey is fair because most of those people have no access to real news and have no idea how much money the government borrowed from the world and how much money the government officials have and where they got that money from . According to what I heard , it could be billions of dollars and who is going to pay it back ? Everyone of them who lives in Cambodia. I believe the answer would be different if those people know what's going on in their government like people from the West . So , my oppinion is , this survey is useless .

As long they continue to see things comparatively to the Khmer rouge's regime, Khmer race is on the highway to irrelevancy, and this regime will continue to drive the country into the hands of Vietnam. The infrastructures are in place for moving Vietnamese immigrants which will flood this tiny country quicker than those blinds can ever imagines. 100 millions and growing, Vietnam has no place to go, but to prey on Cambodia with the help of its best man, Hun Sen. Uncle's dream has finally come to a reality. Cambodia to be ruled and guided by a new generation of well indoctrinated Khmer-Viet and/or Viet-Khmer. It is the survey. I think all political parties have to study the result seriously. I heard Kem Sokha, and Nuth Romdoul criticized IRI over the finding. It is very unfortunate for them. They should understand that it is the people opinion. People opinion depends on many factors like their education background, general knowledge, media, society, friends and family and political affiliation.
As for Cheam Yeab, he thinks that IRI gave the point (76%) to government that it is going on the right track. He should know that it is cambodian people judgment, not IRI. It is really a success for the government to have that high positive opinion from the people.
In this case the Opposition parties need to work harder to give their messages and show negative aspects of the government in order to change people opinion. It is a normal practice in democratic system.
