KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians looking towards Cambodia to resolve their domestic worker problems have to turn elsewhere.
This is because many Cambodian maids prefer to leave at the end of their contracts here for a variety of reasons, which include abuse by employers and inability to settle down.
Cambodian Ambassador to Malaysia Princess Norodom Arunrasmy said it was also “too much” to expect her nationals to fill the vacuum caused by Indonesia’s freeze on sending domestic workers here.
“I often speak to Cambodian maids on my flights back to Phnom Penh and am told they are not renewing their contracts due to various reasons. Some are even sent home by their employers,’’ she said in an interview.
There are an estimated 20,000 Cambodians working as domestic workers here, the bulk of them recruited following a dispute with Indonesia which froze recruitment of its domestic workers after several high-profile abuse scandals.
The Star reported earlier this week that about 35,000 families were in desperate need of maids with the average waiting time now stretching to over seven months.
The Malaysian Association of Foreign Maid Agencies (Papa) stated that on the average, 7,000 maids were needed per month to replace those who went home after their contracts expired.
Princess Arunrasmy said the embassy was also tightening protection mechanisms for its domestic workers here by requiring employers to bring the maids along when renewing their passports.
“Before, the maids didnt have to tag along but now we want to see them to make sure all is well. I also personally sign all the necessary documents to keep on top of things,’’ she said.
In cases of alleged abuse and other disputes, the envoy said the maid, employer and agent involved were called in for consultation.
Princess Arunrasmy said she would meet a Cambodian delegation comprising Labour Ministry and agency officials who were due here on a fact-finding mission.

Cambodian government needs to stop as much as possible the corruption in the country and learn to create jobs for its poor citizens so that they don't have to leave the country to work in such a country as Malaysia and receice such a bad treatment.
Come on, those who are in power! If you can't do it, be a man and get out of power and let the younger generation do the job.
There is much more to life than just power. You have enough money so go and enjoy your retirement and relieve yourself of all the stress associated with governing the country by passing a law to limit all terms for important government jobs including the prime ministership to only 2 terms.
Do it and you will become a true reformer in Cambodian politics. Do not make the same mistakes as your predecessors starting with King Sihanouk.

The marjority of people are ready to throw their aims and purpose overhead, and give up at first sign of opposition. those are the man who significantly selfe important over service, they speak soft and act prestique, in this manner it only atract weakness people and will fail in evry things they do. Weak peopel are those weak in desire and persistance they did find themself lack persistance, it like small a mount of fire make smale amount of heat.Now we clearly see loser consider themself as self important over serivce and the tast at their hands, isn't it?. Those loser mainly are good in talking, tlaking and talking but in practiclay they are not or weak. The first sign of weak people are jealousy, envy, critiscism, and anger, they devastated any things they touch.

Sorry to hear those label you as Viet! I saw Navy on this KM, altough he didn't speak khmer that well, but I must comment him that he had a Khmer soul! He realize how beautiful his grandmother was and job that she and done with her friends and for the country! She must inspire him so much that he is doing this.

Thank you for all your hard works you have done for the country and people. You've tried hard taking care of all the problems involving the Khmer workers in Malaysia. I feel sorry for the young Khmer girls who are coming to work in other countries thinking that they can earn decent income supporting their parent and family back home; instead, the fact just got distorted by the agencies. The agency charges the employer ton of money. The reason I know is that I'm working with colleague who used to hire maid. He had to pay RM7000 up front (RM3400 + RM3600 for the first 6 months). For each girl, when she signs up, her family gets 1,000,000 Riels (USD250 or RM775) up front. And for the first 6 mo's to 1 year she will receive no pay. Her agency pockets all the money. Adding to the humiliation, all the girls need to have a distinctive hair cut to exclude themselve from the rest of the passengers when boarding the plane travelling to Malaysia. Some are lucky working for nice family but there are a lot of unfortunate souls. A lot of abusive and rap cases even lost of life go unreported.
