Lawyer Seeks Bail For 2 Thais Still Jailed In Cambodia

BANGKOK, Jan 26 (Bernama) -- A lawyer has filed a petition in Cambodia's Supreme Court seeking bail for two other Thais who remain in Cambodia, reports Thai News Agency (TNA).

The Thai Foreign Ministry's Information Department Director-General Thanee Thongpakdee said on Wednesday the lawyer had sought bail for Veera Somkwamkid and Miss Ratree Pipatanapaibul from the Cambodian Supreme Court on January 20.

Under the Cambodian law, he said there was not a deadline for the Cambodian Supreme Court to consider the bail request although the Cambodian Appeal Court must consider such a request within five days.

However, Thanee said Thai authorities expected a clear response from the Cambodian Supreme Court within this week.

Meanwhile, the Thai embassy in Phnom Penh has sought permission from the Cambodian Interior Ministry for representatives of an anti-graft network, a legal team of the Thai Patriots Network and family members to visit Veera.

Veera, a noted political activist, and a lesser-known woman, Ratree are among the seven Thais who had been arrested by Cambodian troops attached to Banteay Meanchey province after they had stepped out from Thailand's border province of Sa Kaew last month.

Last week, the Phnom Penh court sentenced five of them to a nine-month jail term which was immediately suspended. The five Thais were then quickly brought back to Thailand after the court had passed the verdict. Veera and Ratree were left behind in Phnom Penh.

The foreign ministry spokesman said the Cambodian court had already sent its verdicts on five Thai detainees to the Thai embassy in Phnom Penh. Staff of the embassy are translating the verdicts into Thai and will then send the translation to the Foreign Ministry and other concerned agencies.

Asked if Veera and Ratree could ask the court to advance its verdict schedule from February 1, Thanee said that would depend on the Cambodian court and that the Thai Foreign Ministry was proceeding with its attempts to bring the two Thai people home safely and as soon as possible.
