THREE young Cambodian students have won the country’s first international prizes in an Asia-Pacific maths competition in Hong Kong.

Four hundred students from eight nations across the region took part in the competition, including a team of 11 from Cambodia.

The grade 11 and 12 students were from Bak Tuk and Preah Sisovat high schools. Khemarak University chose them to represent the country in its first international maths competition from among 70 applicants nationwide.

It was a proud moment for Dr Sok Touch, director of Khemarak University. “For 31 years, Cambodia has never before attended this event and I myself never thought that Cambodia would have such marvellous students who won third-place prizes among hundreds of students in the Asia-Pacific examination.

“Even though we didn’t get first place, we had the ability to take part. This is why politicians or rich people should help the education sector,” said Sok Touch.

“We need support, especially for real sciences, which are the main key to developing the country,” he said.

The Cambodian winner with the highest marks was Sokhonn Reny, a grade 11 student at Preah Sisovath High School. “The most difficult part for me was that the test was conducted in English, except for Chinese students who could use their own language,” he said.

And he attributed his success to hard work. “I never stop studying and reading. If I have time, I always find maths problems from teachers or older outstanding students and search on the internet.”

Bak Tuk High School provided the other two winning students in the December competition. Leang Eng Se transferred to the Phnom Penh school from his home in Kampong Cham province. “To be an outstanding student of mathematics, you need to try hard and be smart enough to follow former prize winners. But you also need encouragement from your family and friends – that’s the main thing.”

Ngo Peng Hok transferred to the school last year from Pursat province, where he was a brilliant maths student. He said he had always loved the subject but studying in Phnom Penh had given him an extra chance. HR

4:46, What is wrong with you. So what if they "look" chinese. Most of us Khmer are mixed anyway, one way or the other. They are proud of their country, Cambodia. You should do the same. They dont consider themselves chinese. You need to tone down your racial biggotry.

Did you ask them or they told you, they are Vietnamese. Stop manipulated the reality.
They were so proud to represent their country. It means their country is Cambodia, not China or Vietnam.

It goes to show that Cambodia do have smart kids but the question is what future hold for these kids? If all the good post are given to relatives only?

Actually, the Ngo family from Pursat province is always in outstanding in Math in Cambodia. His elder brother Ngo Pengty is studying Ph D in Singapore, another brother is doing under graduate study in Techno.

In fact, they are mixing blood. But it doesn't make any profit to criticise them either they are yun nor Chinese. If they are proud to be cambodian they are good enough.

May all them happy and healthy.

It appears that some racist dumbass think true Khmer, are not smart, only the light skin one are smart? How fucking racist is that. Anything good coming from Cambodia is not from Khmer but from light skin Khmer of Chinese ancestry, heh? How fucking ignorant and prejedice is that. I guess Angkor Wat was not built by Khmer but by light skin Khmer? Such judgemental bastard need to take a gun and shoot himself in the head.

Those smart kids never think themselves as Khmer/Chinese or whatever. They just study very damn hard. They are bless with good supporting parents and family that gave them good environment to focus on their education. Every human being has the same size brain, it's what you do with that brain that really matters. There are a lot of smart kids in Cambodia that are going to make Cambodia proud in the coming years. So whatever you think, be proud of these kids accomplishment for Cambodia. Only a jealous dumbass would be think otherwise.

Congratulatons to the our young winners! They not only made us Khmer proud but they made Cambodia proud.

It reminds me of our old years being among the thirtysome most outstanding maths students competitively chosen by Cambodia's Dept of Education, and placed in a special class called "The City's Top Maths Students" in Bak Touk school. Every year, we competed among our classmates and with other best maths students chosen from other schools, and only about thirty were selected to become the city's top maths stdents and were given some sort of scholarship. My hard work at school did pay off. I was able to manage to become the special maths student for four consecutive years at Bak Touk college. After our high school graduation, my friends and I were able to pass the admission exams into univeristies based on teh merits of our own knowledge and ability when at that time only children of the rich and the powerful could get into universities because they had either connections or the money to bribe their way into universities.

By and large, when you are great at maths, you seem to almost always be good at other subjects too. So, study hard my young friends, esp maths. Really, it'll pay off. In the U.S., American students aren't that good at maths compared to Asian students. So, schools here try to find ways and means to improve maths among students, believing maths is the fundamental suject for all other sciences.

10:08 PM, thanks for agreeing with me, and of course for valuing these kids and their hard work at school. We really are in pretty bad need of more of smart kids like them so we will be able to build up human resoures capable to come to par with or compete with others in this age of new inventions and innovations.

Because I did so well on maths suject at school, I got scholarship all the way from high school to unveristies for both undergradute and graduate studies in Cambodia and the U.S. Always keep in mind, hard work will always pays off.

If it hasn't been for the mixed races, we would just have a bunch of monkeys roaming around in Cambodia. It's true that Khmers were once brilliant, but the Thais and Pol Pot took care of that. You should be grateful that these kids identify themselves as Khmer.

I can imagine what type of that 4:46's family looks like and how well it's doing in society based on his remark and his language.

Congratulation!Cambodian young generation. They are Cambodian people not Vietnamese stupid students althought they were born anny family in Cambodia. Everybody must be known that not only A Youn people, student are smart but also our Cambodians beloved people and students.

There are many youn ghosts post in this comment. They wrote and saved their Youn nation. Ungratefull nation whenever you'll be disapeared from the earth.

They don't look anything like Cambodian children. They are either vietnamese or chinese living in Cambodia. Their type are the one that look down on the Khmer people. Their success is not useful to Cambodia because their chinese and vietnamese mentality will take over.

They like to segregate themselves like the Lim Family association or the Ly Family association.

Wonder why didn't POL POT get rid of the Khmer-Chinese?

5:27 AM, there were little discrimination of who the Khmer Rouge kill during that dark day of Cambodian history. Everyone was being accused of as CIA or KGB, etc. KR pointing fingers at each other of who are the real traitors. Pro-Chinese KR killed Pro-Hanoi KR. Pro-Hanoi KR killed pro-Chinese KR. They killed each other because of the manipulation and mass confusion. So it was Chaos. Anyone can be killed easily.
