Bangkok Pleased With Asean Meeting Outcome

BANGKOK, Feb 22 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva is pleased with the outcome of the Asean Foreign Ministers Meeting which supported the Thai-Cambodian bilateral mechanisms in resolving their border dispute.

The Asean meeting in Jakarta Tuesday, supported both countries using the existing available mechanisms, Abhisit told reporters after chairing his weekly Cabinet meeting here.

The mechanisms are Thai-Cambodian Joint Commission on Demarcation of Land Boundary (JBC), the General Border Committee (GBC) and Regional Border Committee (RBC).

Online news reports from Jakarta said the Jakarta meeting, among others, proposed Thai-Cambodian JBC to be held in a third country.

Asked whether Phnom Penh would be readied for the bilateral approaches since they were reluctant initially, Abhisit said: "They have to come for the meeting." There were several clashes reported between Thai and Cambodian troops at the dispute border area between Feb 4 and Feb 16, with the use of heavy weapons including bombs, rockets and tanks by both sides, resulting in the loss of 10 lives from both sides.

The border dispute involved both nations claiming an area of 4.6 sq km surrounding the 1,000-year-old Preah Vihear Hindu Temple as the area has yet to be demarcated, including the access route to the temple.

The International Court of Justice ruled in 1962 that the temple was located in Cambodia, and it was listed as a world heritage site by Unesco in 2008.

Originally, the Thailand-Cambodia JBC was scheduled to take place in Bangkok next Sunday.

The JBC could not move its survey and demarcation task forward for areas adjacent to the temple since its last meeting in Phnom Penh in April 2009, because the Thai Parliament was still considering the minutes of the JBC meetings.

Abhisit also welcomed the Jakarta meeting agreeing to Bangkok's proposal for observers from Indonesia, the current chair of Asean, to be embedded with Thai troops at the border area.

Bangkok's intention is to show that they would not be the first to fire but act accordingly, when under attack.

Abhisit described the situation at the border as better now with no exchanges of fire between troops of both nations.

Ah kabey abhisit, if that makes you happy, keep saying bilateral talks. why don't you reject ASEAN observer this time after Cambodia said it allows observers to come in Cambodian territory if Thailand doesn't?

Thailand seems to have had something to hide back then and now seems like they have already cleaned up and set up the stage for international observers to come in. Such a crook.

How can you have a bilateral talk when Thai parliament didn't even approve the meeting minute two years ago ????????

This is the main problem that Cambodian Gov. have.

Do you want to talk about moving forward ???? If you do, then get the minute approved first.

Do you want to talk just for the sake of talk ????? or you want to talk about solving the problem.

You can talk about this issue for the next 100 years, it is still not going any where !!!!!

Unless Thai Gov. is seriously working to solve the problem, otherwise it is not going anywhere.

From Cambodia side, atleast now there is a third party who keep an eye on the process.
Let see how it goes !!!!!!

Why do Kos Trol, sea and lands proximately over 10 000 km2 have been lost to Vietnam by who treaty? Why don’t Cambodia goverment transparencies explain to Cambodia army at front line and the whole nation about this? Why don't they include this into education system? Why?

Cambodian armies are fighting at front line for 4.6 km2 and what's about over 10 000km2 of Cambodia to Vietnam. Nobody dare to talk about it! Why? Cambodian armies you are decide the fate of your nation, Cambodian army as well as Cambodian people must rethink about this again and again. Is it fair?

Kos Trol, Sea and lands over 10 000km2 have been lost to Vietnam by who treaty at 1979 to 1985 treaty! Treaty! Cambodian army at front line as well as all Cambodian people must rethink again about these issues. Are Cambodian army fighting to protect the Cambodia Nation or protect a very small group that own big lands, big properties or only protecting a small group rather in the real name of protecting Khmer nation?

Cambodian army at front line suffer under rain, wind, bullets, bombs, lack of foods, lack of nutrition, their families have no health care help, no securities after they die but a very small group eat well, sleep well, sleep in first class hotel with air conditioning with young girls message, have super health care from oversea medical treatment, they are billionaires, millionaires who sell out the country to be rich and make Cambodian people suffer everyday as Cambodian people know already.

Who signed the treaty 1979-1985 that result lost over 10 000 km2 of Cambodia??? Why don't they transparency inform all Cambodian and Cambodian army at front line about these issues? Why don't include Kos Trol (Kos Trol size is bigger than the whole Phom Phen and bigger than Singapoor with heap of great natural resources) in education system in Cambodia.

Look at Hun Sen families, relatives; friends are billionaires, millionaires where do they get the money from if we all just get out of war with empty hands? Hun Sen always say in his speech Cambodia just get up from war, just get up from Zero with empty hands and how come they are billionaires, millionaires but 90% innocent Cambodian people are so poor struggling with living every day.
