Cambodia conflict should end, [Thai] Army chief says

February 15, 2011
THE NATION

Thai Army chief Prayuth Chan-o-cha said yesterday he believed armed conflict with neighbouring Cambodia would cease following the United Nations Security Council meeting.

The situation along the border area adjacent to the Hindu temple at Preah Vihear was calm. Villagers had already returned home, he said, and the Army had deployed troops in many locations to prevent more clashes.

"The number of troops stationed at border areas is enough to protect the country," he said.

Thailand and Cambodia are at loggerheads over the boundary issue and skirmishes on February 4-7 in the Preah Vihear vicinity killed at least 10 people, including Thai and Cambodian civilians.

Thai and Cambodian foreign ministers have gone to New York to discuss the conflict at the UN Security Council, which wants to end the fighting. Both sides have blamed each other for starting the border flare-up.

Phnom Penh has asked the UN to ensure a 'permanent cease-fire' at Preah Vihear, which was listed as a World Heritage Site in 2008.

Thailand has insisted on bilateral talks to end the conflict, and doubts whether the UN will agree with Phnom Penh's proposal.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) also wants a role in mediating the conflict between two of its members.

Indonesia, the current chair of the regional group, will convene a meeting in Jakarta on Feb 22 to explore ways to settle the dispute.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa was also at the UNSC meeting in New York with his Thai and Cambodian counterparts. He expected the UNSC to throw the issue back to the regional forum, Asean.

However observers say Asean is unlikely to have any concrete ideas on settling the conflict and bringing permanent peace between the two countries.

Diplomatic sources said Asean would hold an informal meeting late this month, avoiding formality or direct mediation. Bangkok would feel uncomfortable with any mediation of the conflict, the diplomats said.

UN security council, please enforce the international law on siem, and please make it permanent so siem cannot come back with their emotional rankling again about it in the future. please tell siem to control their pad thugs and stop violating the international law with cambodia. siem has a history of stealing from cambodia because without the UN security council, they would continue to steal and rob from cambodia without control, etc! that's how they stole lots of old khmer provinces from cambodia, this same way, they are doing now, you see! therefore, the UN security council should tell them to stop it, enough already! don't steal from cambodia again or make them return all the old khmer provinces back to cambodia they stole! siem still live in the dark age, you see, they think the world is still in the dark age or something, so, please tell them that there are international law that they cannot violate, period! god bless the UN security council and cambodia.

it's simple, UN, just ask siem who built preah vihear temple? we know it wasn't built by siem, it was built by our great khmer angkorian kings, and UN, please remind siem that their lands used to be khmer empire land! and that they real land was a hill tribe in the province of nanchoa china, really! thank you, UN security council for enforcing the international law on siem!

UN told ASEAN to resolve the issue in conflict. ASEAN told Thai and Cambodia to resolve the dispute bilaterally. Case Closed.

UN security council, siem's so-called bilateral talks have failed many times already that led up to the recent war. it is a cause for the UN to intervene once and for all. in other words, bilateral talks with siem is no working and will never work with cambodia. it's a question of respecting the international treaty, not a dispute as siem called it! if siem respec the international law, there is no dispute in the first place. UN security council have to take a closer look at the root of the conflict, not just by what siem is saying, etc, really!

During Angkor time we are the empire. We were bully on everybody. Now Thai do the same thing. Our job now is to defend what we have. But it is useless, when we take from Thai a little and give it to Yuon a lot. The best way is to have new government that are not under Yuon nor siem then we all defend our country and look forward to future but now we are in the mouth of Yuon half way- are you supposed to be happy- not until Yuon is out.

It is clear statement from UN. UN did not mention about disputed area. But Thailand will insist again, I think. Because Kasit talked during a briefing that border problem between China and India hasn't solved yet, and there are many others borders problem around the world that need time to solve.

We were a bully--got proof? I thought Champa invaded us first.

Prayuth: You're an idiot old man. You don't increase troops in many locations to prevent more clashes--you decrease them!!

Are you try to bully people to stop fighting you! you are bullshit
you would die in heleco crash!

"and the Army had deployed troops in many locations to prevent more clashes." Idiot! the more troops, the more tension and the more clashes. If there are no troops, there would be no clash. Unless you wanna take over the disputed zone and advance down to take control of Angkor wat.

it's not siem army chief, it's the UN that told them to stop it! siem is illegal stealing from cambodia, really!

Prayuth Chan , if you think the conflict should end why did you send more troops to the border recently ? What you said didnt match what you did Prayuth Chan .

Cluster bombs user should be charge with war crime.

UN have the roll and responsibility to stop the use such lethal weapons.

UN should investigate and charge those who responsible for the use of such weapons.
