The face of poverty in Cambodia: 81-yr-old and still trying to earn a survival pittance in Hun Xen's Cambodia

Thursday, February 17, 2011
By O.V.

At 81 years of age, Lok Ta (Grandpa) Ou Chamroeun, a native of Prey Veng province, was photoed riding his cyclo along the Monivong Blvd. This is no retirement and he is earning less and less as the preferred modes of transportation are now tuk tuk, moto doup or taxi. While sons of the riches are boasting the extravagance life style of riding the $100,000 Lexus and $2000 per night spending on night club and Blue Label Johnny Walker scotch whisky, Cambodian poor are struggling to earn enough to buy enough calories to replenish a hard day of work. Ta Chamroeun is sleeping in his cyclo at night at the roundabout next to the Monivong bridge. Shower is done by paying a caring and willing homeowner a small fee.

That's why we need a revolution. That's why we need a regime change.
If we don't do anything now, Cambodians will end up like that, work like a dog until they're 81 years old if they can live that long.

What is your point? Do you think only Cambodia has the poor? Come on man, get real, even in super power like the USA there are thousands of homeless people and Thousands die on the street due to poverty. Right now many cities in the US has homeless camps, where people has no job go to sleep in their tents.

Seeing a scene like this makes me want to cry. I can't believe how insincere we are as human being to allow things like this to go on. I know the answer. It's just a rhetorical question. What travesty of justice.

Yeah Cambodia already went through a great revolution already. The result millions death and reset Cambodia economy back to zero. Yeah Pol Pot did it. They promise to wipe our corruption and social inequality, but look how it end up?! Millions times worst than before. So I ask those who are so quick to call for rebellion or revolution, to study the history, and think carefully.

"I can't believe how insincere we are"!. He is in fact 92. Look what he got in his cyclo! It's simply a political exploitation.

Illogical thinking! Do you think regime change can change this old man's fortune? Not going to happen. Even if Sam Rainsy become Cambodia prime minister today, do you think there are no poor people in Cambodia?!

A journalist once ask a cyclo man, what do you think of this regime, he said Ah kdor na or doj ah kdor na de, samai mon knhom tak ciclo, samai niss kar tak ciclo doj ta knear.

People listen UN is know everything but UN as well as American and the world of modern democracy hate Hun Sen regime so much. American, UN use thai to eliminate Hun Sen regime out of the world only, that's why American, UN act like that. Please look at recently regime of Tuniasi and Egypt behind the scence is American and UN. Trust me, I am old enough and have heap of experinced in UN.

The idea is to wipe out all Hun Sen regime from the world and China can't help Hun Sen either because China know that China won't win the war with US. The military technology of China today are copy from US since 1945. US military system are a head China over 60 years.

Cambodian people should also wipe out Hun Sen regime as well as his 400 relative out of the world because they are the source to make cambodian people suffer until today.

I am so proud of him. That man should be a living example for all lazy Khmers who only want to party or ask for a hand-out.

Why do Kos Trol, sea and lands proximately over 10 000 km2 have been lost to Vietnam by who treaty? Why don't Cambodia goverment transparency explain to cambodia army at front line and the whole nation about this? Why don't they include this into education system? Why?

Cambodian army are fighting at front line for 4.6 km2 and what's about over 10 000km2 of cambodia to Vietnam. Nobody dare to talk about it! Why? Cambodian army you are decide the fade of your nation, Cambodian army as well as cambodian people must rethink about this again and again. Is it fair?

Kos Trol, Sea and lands over 10 000km2 have been lost to Vietnam by who treaty at 1979 to 1985 treaty! treaty! Cambodian army at front line as well as all cambodian people must rethink again about these issues. Are cambodian army fighting to protect the Cambodia Nation or protect a very small group that own big lands, big properties or only protecting a small group rather in the real name of protecting khmer nation?

Cambodian army at front line suffer under rain, wind, bullets, bombs, lack of foods, lack of nutrition, their families have no health care help, no securities after they die but a very small group eat well, sleep well, sleep in first class hotel with air conditioning with young girls message, have super health care from oversea medical treatment, they are billionairs, millionairs who sell out the country to be rich and make cambodian people suffer everyday as cambodian people know already.

Who signed the treaty 1979-1985 that result lost over 10 000 km2 of Cambodia??? Why don't they transparency inform all Cambodian and cambodian army at front line about these issues? Why don't include Kos Trol ( Kos Trol size is bigger than the whole Phom Phen with planty of natural resources ) in education

my dear, it's time to change, cyclo mode of transportation is now being replaced with the so-called modern convenient way of the tuk tuk or moto kang bei in khmer. i think cyclo used to be a prevalent form of local transportation once in phnom penh, but is now is kind of slow and outdated mode. i think it still used by some local people for short traveling from home to the market, etc, but don't count on it for long distance ride, etc... because it uses people for power where as tuk tuk, moto, etc used fuel for power. so, think about changing your occupation, ok! go into other businesses, instead! or you will remained poor forever! do something to improve your livelihood, ok!

The point is that you are an idiot who ever asking that questions, If that person is your father or your mom may be that point go through your hardhead.

did you know in school, there is no such thing as stupid question, ok! people go to school to learn, so naturally, they ask any question, if people have problem with that, why become a teacher in the first place! maybe it's time for people to change their occupation, really! my point is, it's ok to ask any relevant question, really!

3:19AM! think again there are STUPID QUESTIONs!!!!!

12:40am,
You sound like ignorant Hun Sen who some years ago said as you do- poverty exist in US. The poor is everywhere in the world including in the US. This is true and natural. No one can change that and we do not want to change that.
But we can minimize poverty.
The vas majority of Americans including Cambodian Americans are well off, living a decent life, driving decent cars, watching expensive TV. Some US Cambodians never work -presumably on Welfare or SSI- but still show up at the fancy reataurant wearing expensive jewelry and eating fancy food and drinking expensive drink.
Many homeless in America are brain dead due to drug and alcohol, but food and sometimes shelter are still provided for them. Poverty exist in America, it is natural, but very mininal, and almost invisible. But this 81 year old Cambodian senior is not alcoholic, nor brain dead and he is still prividing labor. What do you think if this man is your father.

1:06 am.
We cannot completely eliminate the poverty but can minimize poverty to very very low level so that life look like that in Thailand, Taiwan, Malysai and so on.

1:32 am, i hope people understand your logic

3:38AM Very well said and thank you for your valid points.

To those who choose to take welfare issues including poverty in Cambodia for their joke of the day, they will eventually suffer the karma for their reversed deed, and experience the hardship they would have never dream of. Their pathetic comments are the insults to the powerless, disadvantage, and desperate people who live under the mercy of their government administration.
The people of Cambodia have never been provided the proper care and opportunity to develop their skill and living condition, because of the inept corrupted government's system administration.
Thus it links to a norm of selfishness and blaming the poor people for being lazy, which divided social classes. Although it is a common problem in any society in the world, Khmer people have always been suffered the great big gap between the rich and the poor.

This is exactly the same situation if we compare this to the parents who are alcoholic, drug users, gamblers, or victims of mentally abused who act so irresponsible in taking care of their family, including themselves and children as they don't know any better. They see the world only the way they wanted to see, and follow the chain of violence and abuse, which they are so immune and susceptible to their lives cycle. They take part in the make up of our community and society that surely are the burden for all of us.

It's the government responsibility to take care of it country and citizen. And we all know the Hun Sen government has not been doing the job to fulfill the responsibility, but instead to exploit from the country and citizen of Cambodia.

Yeay Tep

stop exploiting the poor or disadvantaged for your political gain, people. it is true when somebody said in any regime in cambodia, it is still the same in society e.g. cyclo driver, trash picker, homelessness, etc... so, stop making excuse by blaming the current regime, etc! don't be ignorant by not understanding history, ok! or at least stop pretending to be better than the previous regime, they all were the same in many way. i vote for any regime in cambodia that developed and better than the previous ones, etc! it's called lack of social services, lack of education, lack of motivation, lack of world view, of understanding, etc, etc... only changes and reforms and paradigm shift or thinking shift, etc will make a real difference in cambodia, i don't care who you are, really! so stop the blaming game, it's so immature, really!

I love to ride the cyclo. Every time I go to Cambodia I ride cyclo with my daughter. She loves it too. She enjoyed it more than riding tuk tuk. I gave him $20.00 just rode about 1/2 mile. The driver told me that it worth almost two months income.

I couldn't refrain from tear when i heard he said that.

Don't forget Pol Pot Regime ended 30 years ago. So this guy was 50. That is why he cannot retire yet. It is not because of Hoon Xen, but because of war after war in Cambodia.
