France offers old maps to help resolve Thai-Cambodia spat

Feb 9, 2011
AFP

PARIS - FRANCE offered on Wednesday to help resolve a festering border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia by providing maps it made at the start of the last century when it ruled Indo-China.

French officials made the maps in preparation for the Franco-Siamese Treaty of 1907, which delimited the area over which the two countries are squabbling.

Foreign ministry spokesman Bernard Valero told reporters that Paris was happy to provide the documents 'to any country that asks us to consult them or to make a copy of these documents'. At least eight people have been killed in four days of cross-border violence between Thailand and Cambodia around the ancient temple of Preah Vihear, which forced thousands of families to flee on both sides of the frontier.

When the Hun Sen's government renegotiates with Youn Hanoi and Siem, why France did not propose instead?

They lose a lot of time, territory and also money to reprint the new map.

We are all manipulated by the superpowers (USA,China,French,England,etc...)

That is very helpful. We are still waiting to hear from the World court to clear this up once and for all. Cambodia does not have the strength to be an aggressor like Thailand suggests. Actually we just wanted to develop our country... without Thailand's hand in it.

The French government has a lot to say in this matter because nobody know more about the Franco-Siem Treaty than the French government.

This is very helpful, our Khmer govt. must ask for this map even we already got this, then we print out more and show to the whole world.
Show every website to see what Ah Siam will say?

That is very good idea, congratulation France. Cambodia has never forget you the grand nation, Without France as protector sine 1861, Khmer land was dissappear for long time ago.

Sounds optimestic when France offers help with the map. Hopefully, Thailand has no objection. What about Cambodia? will we accept this offer from France, the former boss?

expect hope but prepare for a surpised bad news from those France drawing map. France did one heck alot of back stapping with Cambodia by giving away a big junk of land to VN.

It is interesting to read this article. Actually the judgment of the ICJ in early 1960s, the court examined the frontier as a whole between Cambodia and Thailand. So it is a strong legal ground for Cambodia against Thailand. But it is very sorry that many media keep saying the 1962 ruling failed to determine the ownership of the surrounding area around Preah Vihear temple.

Khmer media should stop mentioning the dispute area. There's no dispute land as the Thai is claming.

France should offer this map even before Vietnam planted the first boundary point# 1 in Svay Rieng province, Cambodia.

All Khmers need not only the map along the border with Thailand, but with Viet too. That is time that Hun Govt must show the Khmer interrest, not hidding on the border with Vietnam at all.

this map don't lie like siem's unilateral map or siem's illegal map, really! this map kept permanently in france is the evidence of the international treaty of 1904-1907 that cambodia kept pointing out about! this is official map and should help seal the deal and properly demarcate the siem's confused map! thank you very much to france for keeping the evidence permanent in the french national archive, etc... this official map can help to solve all the border conflict cambodia have with thailand now because cambodia will not and never can accept siem's thugs illegal stealing and cheating map to make illegal claim on cambodia! take this map, modernized it with google to bring it up to date as it will always be the baseline map for cambodia no matter how siem look at it as long as the sun and the moon still shining on earth, really! thank you france and god bless france and cambodia.

this map holds key to help fix the so-called border dispute. to ignore it is to support siem's thugs illegal demand! cambodia and the whole world should take a look at this map because siem kept using their own illegal unilteral map to make illegal claim from cambodia. this map is crucial and holds key to finding solution to this conflict once and for all once it it bring to the attention of the world to help solve this border dispute between cambodia and thailand! thank you france!

while at it, make sure to use this map to demarcate the border line once and for all! all khmer temple along the borders are inside cambodia and belong to cambodia according to this map. and according to this map, there is no dispute of the surrounding areas adjacent to cambodia's preah vihear temple, now a world heritage site! yes, again, this map is key!

of course, once the world is focusing on this map, all of cambodia's borderline will be based on it, i'm sure. it is the official and legitimate map of cambodia as we cannot accept any other map that unilateral and took advantage of us while we are preoccupied with civil war, etc!

Some khmer people in Cambodia, king Sihanouk one of them are poud the victory of Vietnam against France in Bin Bin Phu to hate France.
Depend on more documents Cambodia must disappeared from the mape since 1963 when the French army did not reached on time by proposal of King Ang Doung.
I remembered that my grandmother had show me the robe from Vietname, she told us that "When the French did't came on time we will be a part of Vietnam and must speak vietnamese, because that time all Khmer women must weared Vietnamese robe when they gone out from their flat and Siem Reap, Prah Vihear and Battambang had belong to Siam", she said us before she died.

Without France as PROTECTORATE, Khmer land will never exist again since 1863, she added. As for me, I still have respect for France.

I am certain something like this was offered back in 2008. The problems doesn't have anything to do with maps. This is more of Thailand's internal problems spilling into Cambodia. The yellow and red shirts crap is using Preah Vihear as a political tool.

No matter how much hard facts you bring to the negotiations. Thailand will reject it. Thailand needs to understand they are making themselves look like asses on the international stage. I haven't read any articles saying Preah Vihear belongs to Thailand. Where are they getting their information from?

Hey!Boss,don't hate Khmer;love Thai and Vietnam;being a good master and a good leader,not a bad one.
Show the correct map of Khmer Thai and Lao border, then Vietnam border.
Don't hate Khmer, hug Vietnam.
Don't forget Khmer Krom and help him too.
How come France gave Korat plateau to Thailand in 1904?
Were you afraid of kingdom of England?
Even though Khmer
people want to say
thank to lovely boss

To A chkourt 5:19 AM

Yourself stupid, stupid!

I repeat, Why the government of Hun Sen needs to reprint the maps with Youn Hanoï, because France has preserved the maps of Cambodia since 1907.The new maps reprinted with Vietnam we lost a lot of territory.
