Is it the beginning of the Hun's Dynasty or a prelude to an end of Hun's rule?

Time to tango or time to waltz out of the scene?
Friday, February 04, 2011
Op-Ed by Heng Heng

Recent uprising in Tunisia, Egypt, and in other part of northern Africa have created fear among dictators and oppressors alike, ones who planned to build their own dynasty. All of those strong and power-hungry individuals, have groomed their sons to be their successors as they are aging. In Cambodia, Mr. Hun Sen has employed the exact strategy hoping to keep Cambodia under Hun's family, creating a dynasty that he hope will last much longer than any emperors in the past. Recent appointment of his elder son, Mr. Hun Manet to the new commanding post is indicative to what the PM has set out to do - aligning his son to take over just like North Korea, Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Yemen, the list goes on. The Hun's dynasty is in the making and what is happening today across the arab world could be a prelude to a down fall of the Hun's regime, if Mr. Hun Sen don't learn. Dictators, no matter where, each and everyone has to face its own exit door. It's a question of how and in what capacity? In the case of Mr. Hun Sen who has not yet seen the final curtain, given his self-delusional attitude, might find it rather traumatic. History does not move in a linear line but rather in a circular motion. Can the PM declare to the Cambodian people that his son will not be his next successor? It would be interesting to hear what he reply would be.

The government of Cambodia has gotten away with murder. Why? Because of our Cambodia's tragic past: the killing fields, starvation, political repression and a long protracted civil war, By comparing today's turtle-pace development to the Khmer rouge painful past, and the threat of bringing them back to that compounded with daily political intimidation and persecution, the government has succeeded big time. People are willing to take the lies for fear of that bitter past even when their economic living condition have turned south for the worse, most of them who only focusing on surviving on a day to day. We are used to hardship and our ability to survive tough times can not be measured by any standard. We are the best when it comes to survival skills.

Yes, the country has enjoyed much cash from abroad, donors in thousand of millions, free money at least for now. What happened when it's no longer there? Selling more lands, and who would be on the moving list? A new plan to lease fertile farming land to Bangladesh to secure food supply for that nation will affect who and how many? While Cambodian are being driven out of their farming lands and the country, the government has many great plans to seize more people's lands. Mr. Hun Sen and his cronies enjoyed lucrative land deals, profiting from deforestation, exploration contracts and the list goes on. They have managed to consolidate not only political power but amass personal wealth, business ventures, TVs, Bank, owner of Koh Pich island and development that goes with it while many Cambodians were forced out of their land without giving proper compensation to begin with, but through coercion and forces. Yes, there are new buildings, hotels, and soon to be some high rises. But there are still much abandoned villages all over the country, lots of land surrounded by fences, properties belongs to the elites even some 30 odds year after the war, i.e. Kep. Then there are thousands of people risking lives crossing border looking for works, peanuts and just for the sake of survival. Recent video clip in KI-Media by the victim of Dey Krahom is something can not be taken for granted. It's indicative to what can happen in Cambodia, if things does not change as the water keep boiling up underneath the surface. My recent trip to Cambodia has highlight all the ingredients a country can face and history has shown many times over, again and again, it can certainly happen.

The recent threat in public by the PM concerning any popular discontentment or mass strike would invoke him to close the country's door and beating the dogs.

What else does the PM meant? Will he seal the country like he did back in the early 80s under Vietnam's protectorate and start persecuting anyone, any groups that he deemed against the state? The Cambodian people should demand what exactly does the PM meant when he said, "I'll close the door and beat up the dogs." Is our PM fearful of what going on around the world given a second wave of mass protest is in the making after the fall of the USSR and its Eastern European allies? There are too many similarities in ways the PM has positioned his son, his family and closed associates. The removal of the top military brass, Mr. Ke Kim Yan is not only strategic, but to ensure a smooth transition of his son and those who are most trusted to him. It intended to prevent any possible uprising by the military given Mr. Ke Kim Yan is a possible threat. More than that, Mr. Ke has known where Cambodian territories are being compromised as laid out in the papers submitted to the PM. This move was probably orchestrated by Hanoi, the same way it has ordered Mr. Hun Sen to implement K5 plans in order to eliminate internal threat from capable young Khmers who could rise up against the repressive regime and the occupation at the time.

It's an international joke and a major insult to all Koun Khmers, myself included, to think or even accept a nation that only Hun Sen and his son, including those whom he has chosen can lead the country for eternity. It's a dead-end thinking in a culture that goes back to the old age, in the same way, people have thought that King is God-sent. Unfortunately, the King has left his people for Peking along time ago, leaving them and his faithful followers behind with pools of blood and tears till these days. Many suffer and continue to suffer while the King was quite contented with the deal he made with Samdach Hun Sen, the palace and the preservation of the Monarchy so long Samdach Hun Sen can tolerate the royal's behaviours and its ceremonial role and affairs. Cambodian can probably accept that as well, but they need to be realistic in this modern age, and keep the leeches out of politics. What have they done for you, for your country so far? Learned and do not repeat that mistakes over and over.

Cambodians needs to snap out of their fearful past and to become sophisticated in politics, it's their affairs and their country's. Just to vote smart and vote for change, would be a good start for them, their families and the country. Otherwise, they are at the mercy of this possible Hun's dynasty and the local lords whom they have no defend against except to pray and beg for mercy whenever unpleasant situation arrived. Cambodia needs not have to go through social uprising like Tunisia or Egypt if avoidable, but political repression and economic desperation always has its own patience and limitation. Jordan has taken a drastic move to reform the entire country's institution to be more pluralistic and inclusive, and Saudi Arabia is next, so is Syria. Has Mr. Hun Sen learnt anything from this beside threatening people, opposition leaders and their supporters of violence and fear? I hope and pray that he will be a fast learner, in a positive way, although I am not at all too optimistic given his bloody records and self-delusional aspect. He has forgotten his past and he has become worst than what he initially went into the jungle to try to bring justice to the poor. He had been poor and not only he did not want to understand the poor, but to keep on pilling up his wealth and defend it at all costs. Still, everything in life, especially when we talk about karma, politics, events or what not, in Cambodian case it tends to move in circle. Watch out Mr. PM better be good than be sorry. Your country doesn't need a strong man, your son or any of your appointees, but a truly strong national institutions where the rule of law shines, always among all individuals. Take appropriate steps to reform, economic, judicial as well electoral, and open up to the oppositions to be more inclusive, bi-partisanship. How do you want to exit that final door when the end come? That is something you should plan, plan quickly and wisely. I hope you sleep well knowing that Cambodian people can take your lies and then do the same in return. Treat them well because so far, you haven't.

I'm totally agree with S. Sereyratha. Why is HUN SEN clamping down for those who just express their opinion? Is he scare the transparency or the truth??

I hope the unrests that's happening in the Middle East come to Cambodia soon.

When we have the moment, please all unite and march together to remove Hun Sen the traitor and the betrayal of the nation.

We want new leader who cares for our family economy, social economy and justice for the society. We can't let this guy rule Cambodia forever? Cambodia justice is no properly practice. The rich is robbing the poor and this is very injustice toward the poors.

Please rise up!!!

Mr. Hun Sen, please be advised that this is the internet era. It is not 50 years ago that we can't see each other within a blink. Right now, we can see and projecting news to each other within minute(s). I'm reassure you that the younger generations of Cambodian will uprise and demand for works and the poor will demand their justice.

If you are sure that you can cling to power, go ahead and be stubborn.

The time will come to Cambodia. And I'm telling you that you said last time "Closing the door and beat up the dog". If you're a true and honest leader with dignity you wouldn't have said that. The world or the UN will not let that happen in Cambodia again since this kind of behavior had happened during POL POT.

Yemen:
SANAA, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh on Thursday expressed his deep regret over the opposition's insistence on organizing constant protest rallies against him, a day after he promised to stand down in 2013 and not to hand power over to his elder son.

"I hope my meeting on Wednesday with the members of the Parliament, consultative Council and the military as well as the initiative I offered to the opposition would eradicate the tension between us and them," Saleh said in address aired by the country's state television this evening, hours after more than 20,000 supporters of the opposition struck streets of the capital Sanaa demanding his ouster.

"The opposition gave no ear to our initiative, insisted to organize anti-regime protest rallies," he said as the opposition coalition also organized dozens of rallies across other major cities which thousands of protesters attending.

In his speech to the nation, Saleh repeated his offer for dialogue with the opposition.

"Again, I'm ready to sit down at the table of dialogue together with my brothers in the opposition and I ask them to keep away from tension and agitation," Saleh said, stressing that " dialogue is the best way to the country's political crisis."

Earlier Thursday, over 20,000 Yemeni protesters struck the streets of Sanaa for a "Day of Rage" march, demanding clearly to oust President Saleh.

"The people want the regime to fall, the people want President Saleh to leave," angry protesters shouted in the largest popular rally outside Sanaa University while thousands of ant-regime tribesmen joined the crowd.

"The people want freedom," protesters chanted in row of lines wearing pinky belts on their heads.

President Saleh, facing growing demands to leave power, announced Wednesday he would not seek another term or hand over power to his son, and said he has frozen the ruling party's controversial amendments, which proposed to allow him to be the country's president for life, adding he postponed next parliamentary elections to meet all the demands of the opposition.

Saleh also called the opposition to cancel the mass protest that has already took place on Thursday.

However, the opposition said on Wednesday that they will go to the streets to demand more reforms.

Mohammed Abdulmalik al-Mutawakil, the head of the opposition coalition told Xinhua that "he met with the president two days ago and agreed to direct the opposition protest rally not to demand the ousting of Saleh, but things get out of controls. The protesters clearly demand Saleh's ouster."

Egypt:
CAIRO, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- President Hosni Mubarak on Saturday, in response to violent nationwide protests, appointed intelligence chief Omar Suleiman as Egypt's first vice president in 30 years, and also appointed Aviation Minister Ahmad Shafiq as the new prime minister.

"Omar Suleiman has been sworn in as deputy to President Hosni Mubarak," the MENA news agency reported.

Suleiman, 74, has been the director of the Egyptian General Intelligence Services since 1993, a position in which he played a prominent public role in diplomacy, including in Egypt's relations with Israel and the United States.

As Egypt's intelligence chief, Suleiman was in charge of the country's most important political security files.

Also on Saturday, Mubarak appointed Aviation Minister Ahmad Shafiq as the new prime minister and asked him to form a new cabinet.

Egypt's cabinet officially resigned during a meeting following Mubarak's call for them to step down, Nile television station reported.

Tens of thousands of Egyptians defied a curfew and remained on the streets of downtown Cairo on Saturday, demanding the ouster of Mubarak.

As the protests across Egypt entered a fifth day, the military extended a curfew in Cairo, Alexandria and Suez from 4:00 p.m. local time (1400 GMT) to 8:00 a.m. local time (0600 GMT) the following day.

However, the overnight curfew in Cairo was being ignored by angry protesters who flooded the streets of the sprawling city of 18 million and chanted "Down, down, Mubarak," and "Don't believe Mubarak" in defiance of the president's promised reforms.

At least 50,000 protesters gathered in the downtown area near the main Tahrir Square, and some 1,000 of them tried to storm the Interior Ministry, Al Jazeera television reported.

The TV station also reported that police opened fire and killed at least three protesters. No immediate confirmation or further details were available.

Nowaday Cambodian reluctance to think of anything beside their day to day living. Cambodian learn their lesson through generation of revolution, foreign occupation, killing field and you name it. To ask Khmer for revolution again it is difficult, this is the advantages of government, through fear, intimidation, threat, money machine and gun the government will live longer life but not definite, his regime will face the same fath as others long service leader, may be at his 70 or something.

Even Spean Chroyjongva, he can't even rebuild it until UNTAC arrived the Japanese reconnected this bridge back.

Dictators should take note:

America may support you now, but if you are out of line and become a burden (political liability?) to democracy, it does not hesitate in helping the dictators get expeditely to the exit doors...

In Hun Sen's case it won't be any place in Hawaii, I am sure. Where could he go then? Hanoi, Beijing?

In Khmer history, unpopular leaders were usually toppled by their own government and military, for examples from recent history:

1. Norodom Sihanouk
2. Pol Pot

The Khmer civilians are not sophisticated or powerful enough to withstand the violent intimidation and threats.

I hope America is correctly educating the young and new generation of Khmer military personnel.

A typical frog that can't see things beyond its well. When he makes comparison of any regime today to the Khmer rouge's past, he is either brainless or brain dead. That how he is and so even another 30 years from now, he still compared to the Khmer rouge's hell unless they moved him out of his house, one day.

Hun San can close the door and beat up a few dogs. But if millions of dogs rise up, can he beat them all?

If khmers are too chicken to rise up against Hun San, that's fine because that's not the only way to bring about a regime change. We have elections, why can't khmers not elect him? The truth is, many khmers, specially the less educated are actually believing in him. These people blindly think that he's the only one can keep the country together. Also, in Cambodia, many people think the Opposition party's role is permanently to oppose ie not to replace the governing party. They are still skeptical that an election can result in a change of government. For them, the government is forever ruled by the same man or party. To change the government would mean war or a coup. Can't blame them. If you look at the history of Cambodia, when was the last time a government was changed peacefully?

Dear Dr. Hun Sen and Ten Thousands stars Dr. Hun Manet,

Why do you and your relatives give Kos Trol, sea and lands to Vietnam? Why? and Why?

Why do you and all of your relatives involve a lot of murder cases in Cambodia? Why? Why?

Why do you murder Cambodian K5, 1997 events and so on and so on with lost count? Why?

If you are so good why do you and your families murder Cambodians? Why? And Why?

If you are so good, why do above 90% Cambodians are so poor but you and your relatives are billionaires and millionaires? Why? Why?

Why do you try to kill people from telling the true? Why? Why?

What is the difference from Khmer Rough and you, Sir?

If you are so good why do you block KI from Cambodians?

If you are so good, why do you steal all Cambodian life such as well being, health, cut down Cambodians life expectancy as well? But you and your small group are eat well, sleep well, exercise well, have oversea doctors and best medical treatment from high class private doctors from oversea. Most Cambodians that have no money, your healthcare system left Cambodians patients to die in front of your hospital. Why? Why?

If you are so good why more than 6 millions Vietnamese are living permanently in Cambodia, right now? Why, Dr. Hen Sen? And Why

Everywhere, I walk in Cambodia I see Vietnamese speak Vietnamese every where, why? Why?

Don't you and your families scare of hell for eternity?

When you die can you bring all of your power and money with you?

Dr. Hun Sen and Dr. Big ass lady and his beloved Dr. Hun Manet Please don't put us in jail or kill us for this! We want to live like you and your families do!

Khmers victim of 1997 and K5, Khmer Girl MS. Rattana Keo

PS

If Dr. Hun Sen and Dr. Hun Manet remove the tablet it is show they are extremely coward and his star are just joy stars given by his daddy not by patriotism. Dr. Hun Manet is very coward as his daddy they only aim to kill innocent Cambodians that all. Dr. Hun SEn and Dr. ten stars Hun Manet are very great at bullying Cambodians and killing Cambodians but cowardly toward Thai and Viet.

CPP are not just corrupted, CPP are extremely corrupt. They are even sell the country such as Kos Trol, Seas, lands, Cambodian people, Cambodian health and well being, all resources in the Cambodia…with lost count. You name it!

Seriously where is the win win policy of Dr. Hun Sen represent? The country is getting smaller and smaller and shame by Dr. Hun Sen and Dr. Hun Manet and his families, his relatives and friends.

why leaders always think their position of power is permanent? why? greed? power hungry? too much privileges? too much immunity, impunity, rights, etc? go figure! there ought to be term limit for all of them from now on in order to fix this dictatorial tradition and so on! country changed wit time, etc, why some of them still try to cling to old ways? i don't understand their evil view at all! why are people letting them go on like this, why not do something to stop this kind of clinging on to power without regards to the term limit, etc...! enough already! time to reform gov't system once and for all, ok! there are more to cambodia than just some greedy politicians, really! wake up people and get serious education for a change, ok! school is not for everybody, so if you do poorly in school, then, stop wanting to be a leader, because you're not fit nor qualify as one, ok! step down voluntarily for the sake of peace, prosperity, stability, country, people, etc, etc...!
