Kasit to meet Cambodian counterpart in Siem Reap

February 4, 2011
The Nation

Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya is scheduled to meet his Cambodian counterpart Hor Namhong to discuss border disputes, notably in the area near Preah Vihear Temple, and seek ways to ease the tension in Thailand caused by nationalist protesters.

The minister travelled by car yesterday through the border province of Sa Kaew to Siem Reap, where he will attend the Thailand-Cambodia Joint Commission meeting. Kasit stopped at the border to get a briefing from Thailand's Burapha Task Force.

The joint commission is expected to discuss general issues related to bilateral ties, like economic and cultural cooperation, although Kasit expects to discuss the boundary dispute with his counterpart on the sidelines.

The jailing of Thai Patriots Network leader Veera Somkwamkid and his assistant Ratree Pipatanapaiboon, who got lengthy sentences last week after being convicted of trespass and espionage by a Cambodian court, was unlikely to be on the agenda as the two are expected to appeal the verdict next week.

Kasit said he would visit the two in Prey Sar prison on the outskirts of Phnom Penh after the meeting wraps up today.

The border conflict was initially handled by the joint boundary committee, which met for the last time in 2009. But it is still waiting for the Thai Parliament to give it the go ahead to meet again.

The areas adjacent to Preah Vihear temple have not been demarcated and both countries claim sovereignty over the 4.6 square kilometres.

Thailand has accused Cambodia of building a Buddhist pagoda in the disputed area, and is demanding that it remove the national flag it has hoisted there. Cambodia has rejected the demand, saying the area is under its sovereignty.

Though the pagoda was built in 1998, the government has been pressed to protest by the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), which is also demanding that the 2000 memorandum of understanding on boundary demarcation be scrapped and Cambodians living near the temple be forcibly evicted.

Second Army Region chief Lt-General Thawatchai Samut-sakorn, who oversees the area, said he could not force Cambodia to remove the flag hoisted over Wat Keo Sikha Kiri Svara as it might spark a major conflict between the two countries.

Thailand had also hoisted its national flag at the Twin Stupa nearby, he said. "Both parties can claim sovereignty on the area as long as the boundary issue has not yet been demarcated," he added.

Mr. Hun Sen must not bow his head down by making an agreement with Thailand that Veera Somkwamkid will be released from Prey Sar jail soon. By accepting the demand of Kasit P. which means that Cambodia is clearly underdog politically and militarily. In addition to that, Mr. Hun Sen will be considered by the majority of Cambodians whether in motherland or abroad as a real traitor as once he has done to favor Viets. Please don't release Veera Somkwamkid. His crime of espionage in Cambodia was already adjudicated. If Mr. Hun Sen will release VEERA SOMKWAMKID, he needs to lift SAM RAINSY'S parliamentary immunity too. This could be faired by both Cambodian national and foreigner. Anyway, Mr. Hun Sen must be careful with Thailand's ploy:1) used the nonmainstream religious group like ASOKE to protest against Cambodia,2) the PAD and 3) the demand of using army forces to expel or wage a war against Cambodia. These political strategies seemed did not work out well. Next, Thailand soothed Mr. Hun Sen's feeling by play "HOPSCOTCH". Once Mr. Hun Sen is willing to forget the Thai's military as well as political stratagem, the Thai troops will definitely encroach or even invade Cambodia. My advise to Mr. Hun Sen is, don't releas VEERA SOmkwamkid. Let's Thai's internal chaos politics fuck in her country.

PM HUN SEN ! Don't let Abhisit manipulate Khmers. WE must stand firm to defend our land.

Million good Thai people, who want peace and justice, are on our side.

Veera can manipulate Abhisit as a so called-PM of Thailand. But he cannot manipulate Cambodians and PM of Kingdom of Cambodia.

Khmer Surin Sisaket, Buriram, Ubon....should join us to kick Yellow Shirt out of the border area to protect your interest.

Khmer abroad.

Thailand has no other place than Preah Vihear for the military exercise? They're playing a very dangerous game for choosing this sensitive area for their military drill. I hope it doesn't become all out war. Because both side will gain nothing than the loss of young men at the end. Thai politicians will be discredited for this and viewed as blood stained in their hands by the Thais.

Dear Dr. Hun Sen and Ten Thousands stars Dr. Hun Manet,

Why do you and your relatives give Kos Trol, sea and lands to Vietnam? Why? and Why?

Why do you and all of your relatives involve a lot of murder cases in Cambodia? Why? Why?

Why do you murder Cambodian K5, 1997 events and so on and so on with lost count? Why?

If you are so good why do you and your families murder Cambodians? Why? And Why?

If you are so good, why do above 90% Cambodians are so poor but you and your relatives are billionaires and millionaires? Why? Why?

Why do you try to kill people from telling the true? Why? Why?

What is the difference from Khmer Rough and you, Sir?

If you are so good why do you block KI from Cambodians?

If you are so good, why do you steal all Cambodian life such as well being, health, cut down Cambodians life expectancy as well? But you and your small group are eat well, sleep well, exercise well, have oversea doctors and best medical treatment from high class private doctors from oversea. Most Cambodians that have no money, your healthcare system left Cambodians patients to die in front of your hospital. Why? Why?

Khmers victim of 1997 and K5, Khmer Girl MS. Rattana Keo

PS

If Dr. Hun Sen and Dr. Hun Manet remove the tablet it is show they are extremely coward and his star are just joy stars given by his daddy not by patriotism. Dr. Hun Manet is very coward as his daddy they only aim to kill innocent Cambodians that all. Dr. Hun SEn and Dr. ten stars Hun Manet are very great at bullying Cambodians and killing Cambodians but cowardly toward Thai and Viet.

CPP are not just corrupted, CPP are extremely corrupt. They are even sell the country such as Kos Trol, Seas, lands, Cambodian people, Cambodian health and well being, all resources in the Cambodia…with lost count. You name it!

Seriously where is the win win policy of Dr. Hun Sen represent? The country is getting smaller and smaller and shame by Dr. Hun Sen and Dr. Hun Manet and his families, his relatives and friends.

What began as a popular uprising that toppled the Tunisian government before spreading into Algeria, Jordan, Yemen, Sudan and, of course, Egypt, may now be headed for Syria.

Opposition movements in Syria are calling for mass protests on Saturday against the rule of President Bashar Al-Assad.

The groups are organizing on Facebook, with several pages promoting protests in Damascus, Aleppo and other cities.

Protest organizers want better living standards, human rights improvements and a greater voice for youth, according to the Middle East Media Research Institute, a Washington-based organization that studies and translates news accounts and social-media postings.

I'm totally agree with S. Sereyratha. Why is HUN SEN clamping down for those who just express their opinion? Is he scare the transparency or the truth??

I hope the unrests that's happening in the Middle East come to Cambodia soon.

When we have the moment, please all unite and march together to remove Hun Sen the traitor and the betrayal of the nation.

We want new leader who cares for our family economy, social economy and justice for the society. We can't let this guy rule Cambodia forever? Cambodia justice is no properly practice. The rich is robbing the poor and this is very injustice toward the poors.

Please rise up!!!

you know a lot of the middle east countries are oil riched and some even have absolute monarchy as rulers, etc... in that area of the world, there seemed to be old thinking people, ancient system of gov't, etc, worst than in cambodia or asia for that matter. compare to cambodia, we are a lot better in gov't system, given our people and country just awakened from KR nightmare, etc...! it is unfair and unjust to try to compare my country of cambodia to those ancient, archial middle eastern countries. my country cambodia is a lot better in many way in gov't, etc... please give my leaders some credits for their hard work at reforming cambodian system, at bring peace, stability, development, etc, to my country. keep in mind in cambodia their is no term limit law to prohibit any one leader from running in gov't as long as they are healthy, qualified, etc, etc... so, it is bias and unfair to make harsh criticism or hard judgment on my leaders in cambodia. in cambodia, for your information, leaders are often chosen by their popularity with the khmer people in the whole country, not so much with term limit, etc, unless they reform the system and make law to govern that, otherwise, it is a norm here in cambodia, you know! it is good to push for much needed reforms in cambodia, but please be patient and show lots of love, care and kindness, etc... may god always bless my country of cambodia and all the khmer people and khmer citizens, etc...

cambodia is too wise not to follow in the footstep of the egypt and the middle east countries. yes, there are other ways to reform, to fix things, etc... violence don't necessarily solve violence as the wise ghandi had echoed in the past. please encourage the god's way of love, nurture, care, patient, tolerant, mutual respect, etc, etc... thank you all for your understand and patient and love, and care, etc...
