Opposition sites blocked in Cambodia

Internet CENSOR Sieng Sithy:
Only his UGLY FACE can be seen on computers in Cambodia?
Paul Blanche-Horan, EZECOM  CEO, is lying through his teeth?

Though many opposition sites are blocked in Cambodia, the government has dismissed rumours that it ordered internet service providers, or ISPs, to block access to those sites. But the truth may finally have come out.

Going online is still a relatively new experience in Cambodia, but one that is growing much more common, particularly in urban areas.

But for weeks now, users of EZECOM, one of the growing service providers, have complained that they are unable to access a number of sites, including one called KI-Media, a pro-opposition party website that is highly critical of the government.

Though EZECOM has denied blocking access to any websites or receiving any orders from the government to do so, an email was leaked this week from a senior official at the telecommunications ministry.

Leaked evidence

The email, which ran in the Phnom Penh Post newspaper on Thursday, puts paid to those denials, since it congratulates ten ISPs, including EZECOM, for blocking access to a list of websites, including KI-Media.

Human rights group LICADHO, which releases an annual report on the state of Cambodia’s media, says news of covert censorship is worrying. Mathieu Pellerin of LICADHO told Deutsche Welle, "what we’ve confirmed this week is basically one of the last unregulated spaces for people to express themselves on a variety of subjects, political or otherwise, has been officially now censored by the government, which is a huge unfortunate milestone in terms of freedom of expression in Cambodia and further shrinks the space that Cambodians have to express themselves."

But not all websites are blocked, so the question is, how significant is this?

Too much state control

Pellerin said every television station in Cambodia and most radio outlets are aligned with the ruling party. That increases the importance of the internet all the more, despite the fact that Cambodia’s internet community is small. Pellerin added, "you don’t have as many sites as you would have in other countries, as there are very few sites, actually. But in a smaller pool of sites, that affects quite a lot of viewers and these sites that have been censored were quite popular with the Cambodian community."

For its part, the government still continues to deny there is any policy to block access to websites.

Despite the fact that the email was leaked, along with minutes of a meeting in which the order was given to block certain sites, So Khun, Minister for Posts and Telecommunications reiterated again on Thursday that there is nothing to the claims.

"No policy of blocking sites"

EZECOM has not commented and has also denied Deutsche Welle’s requests for an interview.

The issue of governments controlling internet access is nothing new, and came to the fore again in recent weeks after the revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt.

Freedom of expression in traditional media and online were recently emphasized in a speech by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. She said the US supports that freedom for people everywhere, and has called on other nations to do the same.

For now that call seems to have fallen on deaf ears in Cambodia.

Why do Kos Trol, sea and lands proximately over 10 000 km2 have been lost to Vietnam by who treaty? Why don't Cambodia goverment transparency explain to cambodia army at front line and the whole nation about this? Why don't they include this into education system? Why?

Cambodian army are fighting at front line for 4.6 km2 and what's about over 10 000km2 of cambodia to Vietnam. Nobody dare to talk about it! Why? Cambodian army you are decide the fade of your nation, Cambodian army as well as cambodian people must rethink about this again and again. Is it fair?

Kos Trol, Sea and lands over 10 000km2 have been lost to Vietnam by who treaty at 1979 to 1985 treaty! treaty! Cambodian army at front line as well as all cambodian people must rethink again about these issues. Are cambodian army fighting to protect the Cambodia Nation or protect a very small group that own big lands, big properties or only protecting a small group rather in the real name of protecting khmer nation?

Cambodian army at front line suffer under rain, wind, bullets, bombs, lack of foods, lack of nutrition, their families have no health care help, no securities after they die but a very small group eat well, sleep well, sleep in first class hotel with air conditioning with young girls message, have super health care from oversea medical treatment, they are billionairs, millionairs who sell out the country to be rich and make cambodian people suffer everyday as cambodian people know already.

Who signed the treaty 1979-1985 that result lost over 10 000 km2 of Cambodia??? Why don't they transparency inform all Cambodian and cambodian army at front line about these issues? Why don't include Kos Trol ( Kos Trol size is bigger than the whole Phom Phen with planty of natural resources ) in education

If the Cambodians want a society that is ruled by LAW they must act now. To be in control Hun Sen always compare to the Pol Pot era and threaten war and chaos in Cambodia.....now he puts his sons in key positions to ensure the slavery of Cambodia under his family's rule.

While I condemn the Thais aggression and stand with most Cambodians on this issue at the same time it provides a perfect cover for Hun Sen and the CPP to allow the Eastern borders move uncheck. Now who is checking the Eastern border.....it's all forgotten due to this Thais aggression. Like it or not Cambodia is losing so in this respect the Thais and the Vietnamese are helping each other out in eating up Cambodia bit by bit.

When can we stand on our feet!!!!

Look at Egypt and Tunisia as examples.....we must come out in mass and shake the core of dictator in Cambodia.....Hun Sen will not dare to suppress/kill us on mass, doing so will automatically put him as a war criminal and the International Court will try him for mass murder....we'll experience pain/suffering only once but the benefits are endless for our country's future and children's children.......
