Indonesian military team visits disputed Thai-Cambodia border area

PHNOM PENH, Feb. 26 (AP) - (Kyodo)—A five-member Indonesian military team visited the Cambodia- Thai disputed border area on Saturday to pave the way for deployment of Indonesian observers in the region, a senior Cambodian defense official said.

Gen. Neang Phat, vice minister of national defense, told Kyodo News by telephone that the Indonesian advance team visited the ancient Cambodian temple of Preah Vihear and the surrounding area to find a suitable location for deployment, which will be made under an ASEAN- brokered deal.

He said the Indonesians spent several hours in the area and will report back to the Indonesian government, the current chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

Cambodia and Thailand agreed during an ASEAN foreign ministers' meeting in Jakarta on Tuesday to invite Indonesia to deploy civilian and military observers to monitor a ceasefire agreement in the border area.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa said Indonesia will dispatch two separate teams to Cambodia and Thailand, each consisting of 15 to 20 military personnel and civilians.

Neang Phat said it is unclear when the observers will start their mission but expressed hope that it will be "soon."

The observer mission will be ASEAN's first since 2005 when the regional group and the European Union set up the Aceh Monitoring Mission to oversee disarmament in Indonesia's Aceh Province following a peace agreement between Indonesia and the separatist Free Aceh Movement.

Cambodia and Thailand have been at loggerheads since 2008 over an area involving 4.6 square kilometers of land near the Indus temple shortly after it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Since then several rounds of armed clashes have erupted, the most recent from Feb. 4 to 7. The conflict has left at least 10 people dead, nearly 100 wounded and more than 25,000 people displaced on both sides.

The U.N. Security Council has expressed "grave concern" over the border skirmishes and urged the establishment of a permanent cease- fire.

ASEAN groups Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

My beloved 7:51PM!

Forgive me for intentionally and exclusively disagreeing with your magnificent patrioticism of, not Khmer nation, but SenVarman.

I am totally an illiterate man and not a Khmer PoliSickan, but undoubtedly believing anyone who is not under Youn's control can effectively, conscientiously, and patriotically accomphish a better job than an uncountable PhDs, SenVarman. What have he accomplished for Khmer nation? Increasingly destroys her!

Unfortunately, our beloved SamRainsy is psychologically afraid of death, I think therefore I undoubtedly believe he will not poliSickally win against SenVarman and the CPP, but I am hopeful that I am predictably wrong!

Cambodian officials, police and military must learn from Libia government ministers, embassadors, police and military. They are working for their people and are not slaves of their leaders. Cambodian leaders are presently turning all Cambodians to be their slaves from one generation into another generation to serve their families. They took over all profits, benefits of the country for themselves by paying slavery salary and slavery wage to their officials and all Cambodian people. They have blocked all economic opportunities for themselves such as oils, minerals, timbers, electricity, water, lands, water ways etc.. and etc...
They are going to replace Cambodian people by new immigrants so that these immigrants won't dare to revolt to their regime.
It is very shamefull for all accademic, intellectuals who are working for these monkies. They must have no choice because their phD and their degree are not recognised by intenational organisation.

You are too generalized in your comment against everyone who happens to work in Cambodia. They need a job to help support their families and what they do may not be all for Hun Sen at all. Take as an example people who work in the hospital, fire station, in the battlefields to protect Cambodia against the Thai aggression, etc.

It is always easy for you to live in Australia and give such an unreasonable comment from a far. I hope you do earn a living and not depending on someone or the welfare system to feed yourself.

Hun Sen alone cannot create all of these problems in Cambodia or solve them. So if you kill Hun Sen today, somebody else will replace him and the status quo continues.

Cambodians need to change and this change has to happen at the grassroot level. People have to learn to expect more from their government and be responsible to make the government answer to everything the government does. Education is the key and it will take a while. Until then, it does not matter who is in power, they will all be the same more or less!

Above comment and this one are in response to Areak Prey who, without any evidence whatsoever, assume that Cambodians in Cambodia who hold degrees of various kinds obtained them from bad schools not internationally recognized.

Well, some of these people graduated from prestigious universities in Australia, France, Canada, US, Japan and other western countries so I have no idea what you are talking about when you insult their learning so badly.

Hopefully, you hold an internationally recognized degree, Mr. Areak Prey!

Dear Poster 4.26AM and 4.33AM
Before you jump to response to my comment about all accademic, intellectuals and all PHD who are working for these monkies, you need to read my comment word by word to understand the whole comment. I felt very sorry and angry for these monkies to pay slavery salavery to our doctors, to all public servants, to our police, our molitary and to all our school teachers.
What I condemn is to all accademic, intellectual and PhD who have their choice to stay away for working directly to protect these monkies to stay in power.
We have to work for our country and our Nation but not for any individual leader. If they cannot provide and cannot open opportunities to all our people for better lives, they must go.
I myself, have no degree nor any qualification, but I won't work for anyone at all. I am alway be my own boss. I have retired since I was 45 years old. In politic, I can challenge to anyone at anywhere if there is a free and respectable debate.
