Border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia intensified Sunday as thousands of Thai residents fled villages near the disputed area of Preah Vihear. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen sent a letter to the United Nations Security Council, calling for an emergency meeting to help end the fighting.
Thai residents from three villages near the disputed border region began moving to makeshift shelters Sunday night to escape artillery fire.
Thai villagers say the fighting is the worse they have seen in years. An elderly woman, who was huddled in the back of a pick-up truck with nearly a dozen other people says she saw heavy artillery and tracer fire over her village and she had to flee. She says it was the second time she had to evacuate her village in the three days.
Since Friday, Thai and Cambodian soldiers have used guns, tanks and rockets to bombard one another over the disputed territory that surrounds an 11th century Hindu temple.
According to a Thai Army spokesman, Sunday's fighting left about 10 soldiers wounded. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen says the clashes resulted in "more human casualties and damages.''
In a letter to the U.N. Security Council on Sunday, Mr. Hun Sen accused Thailand of launching what he called a "full scale armed aggression against Cambodia." He said Thai artillery fired into the Preah Vihear temple and nearby areas. The Cambodian government says part of the temple has collapsed as a result of the bombardment.
The Cambodian prime minister says Thai artillery shells have landed as far as 20 kilometers inside Cambodian territory. Thai authorities say they are responding to Cambodian artillery fire.
A 1962 ruling by the International Court of Justice awarded the Preah Vihear temple to Cambodia. But the decision did not settle ownership of the land that surrounds the temple.
The dispute over the area flared up in 2008 when UNESCO declared the temple a World Heritage site. There have been occasional minor clashes between the two armies since then. A new round of tensions began in December when seven Thai activists from the People's Alliance for Democracy, also known as the Yellow Shirts, were arrested by Cambodian authorities when they traveled to another disputed border area.
Political analysts say the activists wanted to provoke a crisis to help rally public support ahead of elections that are expected to be held later this year in Thailand. Cambodian authorities charged them all with espionage, but five of the activists have been released.
At a rally on Saturday in Bangkok, demonstrators from the People's Alliance for Democracy movement called on Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to step down. The protesters are demanding that the government take a tougher stand against Cambodia over the temple dispute.
The United States is urging both countries to show restraint. The Association of South East Asian Nations, or ASEAN, says the deteriorating situation is undermining confidence and that it could affect economic recovery in the region.

I like war because war shows the worst of part of the human nature! I must admire Cambodian government for taking a peaceful stance and they are standing firm on protecting their motherland!
Thailand had been pampered for too long by Uncle SAM...But when Thailand chooses to be a brat and what else can Uncle SAM do? Thailand is a brat with a big ego and the brat thinks that anything he wants and he can have it! Well…who is stopping the brat now? So come and get it! Cambodia is going nowhere and still waiting!
9:45AM,

To 9:58AM
Thank you for telling...and the Viet will show no remorse for Thailand for breaking their piggy bank!ahhahahhahahha
I wish these Siem thugs know what they get themselves into! The trap is already set up for them!
The worst of this result was from Hun sen and his commander Hor Nam Hong for prolonging to refer this disputes through security council. These CPP animals are not honest to their people and to their Nation. They have put their self-interest first before their people and their Nation that is why they wait until the last day which is very late to protect Cambodia.
Indeed Cambodia military power is very soft and very weak. There are too many stars soldiers than foots soldiers. For the short term warfare, Cambodian can manage to win Thais. But for a longterm war, Cambodia will be lost because of small numbers of the real fighters. Therefore we urge Cambodian government of Hun Sen to refer to security council. But these government has hid their illegal sold of lands to vietnam which they don't want to reveal these secret to come out into public and Vietnam is also wanting to keep these secret too.
Don't worry about War with Thailand HUN SEN having 2000 Star Armed Forces General including his wife Bun Rany and the his two son STAR generals.
Thai soldiers will run to hell Diarhhea already....having heard too many Star like that...
Hun Sen almost has a nervous break down in the last few weeks.
Every time he turns on the tvs, BBC, ABC,CNN, he saw all the dictators being over thrown by their own people all over the world.
To numb the fear, instead of taking Morphine that his doctor prescribed to him, he ordered his generals to open fire on the Thai armies.
