A joint commission on border demarcation between Thailand and Cambodia plans to meet later this month as border tension has intensified, a senior Thai official said on Monday.

The Thai-Cambodian Joint Commission on Demarcation for Land Boundary (JBC), led by senior government officials of both countries, is scheduled to meet in the last week of February, Chavanond Intarakomalyasut, secretary to Thai foreign minister told a local television.

Chavanond did not give a specific date in the interview.

The JBC together with the memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed by Thailand and Cambodia in 2000 is the key framework for settling the two countries' disputed border areas. The meeting will be taking place as Thai and Cambodian soldiers exchanged heavy-gun firing in the past four days, causing some casualties on both sides.

In a related development, Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa, as the current chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), is scheduled to arrive in Bangkok on Tuesday, Feb. 8.

Chavanond said that Thailand will brief the Indonesian minister on the current situation on its border disputes with Cambodia, but is not seeking any mediation by ASEAN.

that is what thailand has always played with cambodia. With mounting outside pressure to negociate, cambodia has to accept the meeting. then the complain to UNSC will be withdrawn.

I think Cambodia government needs to have a realistic plan to deal with Thailand. The decision has to be made with thorough analysis of circumstance, but not with emotion.

If this agreement leads to the withdrawal of the letter sent to UNSC, Cambodia will fall into Thai trap again. UNSC will view the next fighing along Thai-Cambodian border as trivial thing. I doubt the next letter would be a throw into a trash bin fast. Thai has played this card from the start. Thai know how to take advantage of World communities’ loophole. The longer the border fighting the better the disputed zone is marked. It happened to Israel and Palestine, India and Pakistan. After all, UN and UNSC are unable to draw the borderline for those countries or stop them from fighting. I wish I am wrong and hope it will not happen to Cambodia.

Negotiation with Thailand is useless. They have never honor to their words/treaties.

They are unfaithful people for us to trust.

We better ask for 3rd party to intervene.

Wast of time, I tell you. Thai is not respect internation court of justice why will they respect their own word? So far, they has not even one respect what they has agree upon what they has signed on official documents. Waste of time. Take to the UN. If anything is not working, well, there is nothing Khmer can do, prepare for along eduring war. We had been there before, but this time we are not fighhting each other but the invader. May this is the time, all Khmer from 12 province have opportunity to cede from Thai and join us to be back with the family!

There is no other option but to continue negotiating with Thailand again and again, and then left the problem unsolved as it happens between Thailand and Loas, and Thailand and Malaysia.

It is sure that the UNSC will not convene for the sake of Cambodia. There are more important issues that the council have to resolve as Thai government spokesman said.
To issue any resolution from UNSC, we need at least a consensus amount the five permanent members. And it is not something that is easy to reach. These five will act according to their interest rather than justice.

This commission meeting is a waste of time. Cambodia cannot establish anything meaningful with a chaotic government.

but what can we do? unless thailand also seeks mediation or intervention that we can bring the issue to the international stage. believe it or not, thailand will not agree to go ICJ again.

Since the problem started in 2008, it has been always Thailand who proposes to schedule meetings. And Cambodia have no other choice but to accept the meeting. It is a diplomatic game. I hope Cambodian Foreign Ministry finds a strategy to push Thailand into the corner.

Bangkok has been the darling of world opinions for a very long time. UN scrutiny will not happen, and even the vietcongs, Cambodia's boss would not like any UN review of Cambodia situation. The US is also in support of their long-time siam puppets in Bangkok and is courting the vietcongs in Hanoi. So, with all the lip services, Cambodia again is suffering from regional politics that are advantageous to the predatory and expansionist neighbors.
