A total of 120 MPs of the Democrat Party and its coalition partners on Wednesday afternoon submitted a letter to House Speaker Chai Chidchob calling on him to ask Unesco to put the listing of Preah Vihear temple as a world heritage site on hold.
The letter was accepted by Deputy House Speaker Col Apiwon Wiriyachai.
MP Atthaporn Ponbutr said he and his colleagues oppose the listing of the ancient temple because the area around it is still in dispute and the scene of clashes between Thai and Cambodian troops from Feb 4 to 7 that caused death and injuriy to soldiers and civilians of both sides.
“There are photos which show that Cambodian troops used Preah Vihear temple as an operations base, which is a violation of the principle and conditions for listing of a world heritage site and has put the temple at risk of being damaged,” he said.
The Democrat list MP said if Unesco gives final approval to Cambodia’s listing request, the current bad ties between Bangkok and Phnom Penh will worsen. This could lead to confrontation and possibly war between the two neighbours, the Democrat list MP said.
Neither country wants such a war, and nor does the international community.
Mr Atthaporn said Preah Vihear should be listed only after the demarcation of the disputed border is agreed on by the two countries.
He asked the speaker to pass on the opinion of the 120 MPs to the director-general of Unesco.

Fighting to protect our identity is not a terrorist act.
Remembered of the all new countries split from the former Yugoslavia. They all started with that kind of terrorist acts and the world community also supported them.
Cambodia should use all human resources, rebuilding our Cambodian military forces to protect our sovereignty.
Therefore, we have the right to recruit all Khmer around the world to work for our military forces. In Mekong Delta, we have not just Khmer, but also have a lot Khmer/Viets (father or mother Khmer).
We also have the right to recruit the Khmer descents from other side of our today border and other parts of the southern of Thailand, who love and ready to protect our country. They are still Khmer Descents, under the new Cambodian Constitution, as Khmer citizen like we all.
You all are blind can not read the map and the Frence language threaty that your old king singned with France in after 1904?
If you all claim this territory we claim our territory back not on the land but on the sea too.
Your land has internal policy' problem not resole this problem but all turn this problem making conflict with Khmer in the wrong way, ok Cambodia has a shit leader who use this topic to pave his dictator power to oppress Khmer.In fact, he haas give a lot of land to Viet without limit and allow Viet (7 millions) to life be as Khmer citizens in Cambodia.
