Thailand to reject UN help over Cambodia

Thailand says it will tell the UN Security Council that its border dispute with Cambodia can be solved without international intervention.

The Thai and Cambodian foreign ministers will each present their version of events at a special meeting in New York.

At least eight people were killed and thousands evacuated in four days of heavy fighting earlier this month.

Cambodia is pushing for the UN to take a more direct role.

Disputed land

In recent days the guns have fallen quiet, but the situation at the border between the two countries remains extremely tense.

Two heavily armed militaries are ranged against each other across a 4.6-sq km (1130 acres) stretch of disputed land.

Now, for the first time, Thailand's and Cambodia's most senior diplomats are, in effect, being invited to explain themselves to the wider world.

Each accuses the other of being the aggressor. Each has made unverifiable claims about casualties and munitions used.

Cambodia has described itself as being at war with Thailand and has suggested the UN send peacekeepers to the disputed area.

Thailand says there is no need for any third party involvement; existing bilateral channels should be sufficient.

The Indonesian foreign minister, Marty Natalegawa, will also be attending the meeting to represent the regional grouping, Asean.

Asean has been pushing hard to help resolve the dispute.

Speaking after visiting Cambodia and Thailand last week, Mr Natalegawa told the BBC the days of Asean being silent in the face of such problems are no more.

We must, he said, confront these issues head on.

However that is presumably only possible if the two sides are willing to accept offers of help.

Cambodia governtment do not listen to Thailand, Thailand violated the internation law which was treated in 1907 - 1908. Thai made up the map. Thai has their boss America has had Thailand at all time.

the above map is siem's unilateral map or illegal map, if some people did not know already! the cambodia claim is the legitimate map from the international treaty of 1907, you know! use the law on this map and the siem thugs cannot win as it is illegal of them to redraw the map for themself in order to steal from cambodia with the intention to steal cambodia's preah vihear temple, what else? now we all can see better with the map as aid to understand the siem's violation and why cambodia cannot allowed that to happen to us, really!

did you know the purpose of siem's violation as the map above showed is to block the easy accessway from cambodia to our precious preah vihear temple. for your information, our great khmer ancestors chose this location to build preah vihear temple because of the beautiful location that overlooked the vast plain land of cambodia to the south of it. siem is evilly clever to redraw the illegal map to block off and steal from cambodia, you see! they are real thief!

We already had bilateral talks for years and it did not work. Cambodia don't have to follow Thai's wish list. This spoiled brat has been crying for not getting what they want... Will the UN fall prey to this liar.

"Unconfirmed reports said that there were "more than 70 killed in Cambodia," including Maj. Gen. Hun Manet, the son of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen"

Was that true ????
Sen wants to promote his son like Kim Young Il promoted his son Kin Y. Un to fight with South Korea, the family Throne from father to son.
Like Sihanouk to Son
Like Sen to Son

Nothing new in dictatorship Country ..(sic)..
If this news of Hun Manith killing could be a media rumors by his daddy instigating to make his son name more popular but the guy is still living in Cambodia...

Thailand's rejection of United Nations' help is equivalent allowing a grown up man to continue beating on a child he does not like. I think the UNITED NATION BODY is smarter and has much more depth than Thailand thinks.

Again, the bilateral talks got its turn for years and result was war. The question is: has Thailand got justice for Cambodia for bilateral talks??? The answer is resounding NO... Does ASEAN has mechanism to resolve issues of border dispute such as Cambodia and Thailand? The answer is still resounding NO... ONLY UNITED NATIONS is fair and resolute place for Cambodia and Thailand whether Thailand like it or not.

Does anyone else notice all the unclaimed land NE of Preahvihear? I'll take it.

if you know the geography of this area well, the northeast area stayed mostly the same since this 1907 map was recreated. why, you might ask? well, because it is all sheer cliffs along there, no easy access to our preah vihear temple, whereas the so-called contested area have easy accessway from cambodia to our preah vihear temple, and guess what! siem thugs try to block that accessway. that's the reason why we fought back, really! plus the area is so-called dispute is violated by siem not respecting the international treaty map of 1907. it's as simple an explanation as that, really! study khmer geography thoroughly so you can understand more about our khmer geography, etc, ok!

siem must respect the 1907 map, no excuse, ok! or the blame will not go away with us, ok! we didn't violate the 1907 map, siem did, ok!it's as simple an explanation as that, really!

Cambodia needs the UN peace keepers to ensure stability in the region. Bilateral negotiations will prolong conflict without end.

Thai aggression against Cambodia will continue without UN peace keepers.

UN peace keepers will help guarantee ceasefire at the same time monitor the situation.

ICJ verdict of 1962 on Vihear Temple must be analyzed and enforced by the UN.

Up to date, Thailand as a UN member, violated all the ICJ verdict of 1962.

1. Sending troops to attack Cambodia.
2. Disrespecting the internationally recognised map.
3. Illegally producing its own map to gain land at Cambodia's expence.
4. There is no so called disputed 4.6 km2 zone.
5. Thailand must return all artifacts luted from the Khmer Preah Vihear temple since the 1950's to the present.
6. Using banned weapons against Cambodia--namely custer bombs.
