UNESCO to send mission to Preah Vihear

Source: UNESCO

The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, today reiterated her call for calm and restraint around the Temple of Preah Vihear, inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2008. A border dispute between Cambodia and Thailand caused several deaths and damage to the site in recent days. "I intend to send a mission to the area as soon as possible to assess the state of the temple," she said. “World Heritage sites are the heritage of all humanity and the international community has a special responsibility to safeguard them. This requires a collective effort that must be undertaken in a spirit of consultation and dialogue. Heritage should unite people and serve as an instrument of dialogue and mutual understanding and not of conflict.”

The Temple of Preah Vihear, dedicated to Shiva, is composed of a series of sanctuaries linked by a system of pavements and staircases over an 800-metre-long axis; it dates back to the first half of the 11th century AD. The site is exceptional for the quality of its carved stone ornamentation and its architecture, adapted to the natural environment and the religious function of the temple.

It is a good sign from UNESCO. But i do not expect much from UNSC, because it is too much about politics of the world powers.

the "preah vihear dispute" without the UN mediators will not go away and will always come back in the form of siem's rankling in the future and so forth! that's why emphasize the use of the rule of law to demarcate this sensitive border areas with the help of the UN security council once and for all so there won't be any more future rankling with siem extremist group and so forth!

and the so-called bilateral talk have nothing to do with preah vihear conflict, really. bilateral economical benenfit is for all asean nations to help their nation members in order to bring all of them to the same economic prosperity, that's bilateral benefits, however the conflict of preah vihear is more localized between cambodia and thailand. and only the UN security council mediation will help to put and end to this once and for all, i believe! or siem extremist will keep on rankling forever, it's in their gene, really! once the border is properly and lawfully demarcate, siem extremist cannot rankling illegally again! thus, it is important to for the UN to mediate as talks between the aggressor (siem or thailand is now known) and cambodia (the rightful owner of preah vihear temple) go nowhere but in circle! how boring to me! anyway, it is wise to mediate by the UN security council and not let thailand bully cambodia with their economic superiority or military might, etc. of course, cambodia will defend our country from siem invasion!
