WASHINGTON — The United States called Monday for Thailand and Cambodia to show restraint after four days of cross-border fighting but took no stance on Phnom Penh's bid for UN involvement.
The United States has "raised our concerns with senior officials" in both Thailand and Cambodia, State Department spokesman Philip Crowley told reporters.
"We continue to urge both sides to exercise maximum restraint and take all necessary steps to reduce tensions," he said.
Crowley said that the United States was "undecided" on whether the United Nations should be involved after Cambodia called for urgent action by the Security Council.
"We are discussing the best way forward within the Council," Crowley said.
Brazil, the president of the Security Council for February, said that members voiced "great concern" about the situation.
Thailand has called for a bilateral solution and criticized Cambodia over "internationalization" of the conflict, according to diplomats.
Each country has accused the other of provoking the violence near the disputed 11th-century Preah Vihear temple, which has claimed seven lives and displaced thousands.

my beloved america, please help resolve this conflict as it is now going nowhere! please be the mediators. please listen to both sides of the arguments in order to helf settle this once and for all so they can proceed with properly demarcate the international borderlines between the two neighbors. please tell thailand to educate their pad extremists to stop using thai nationalistic problem on cambodia and to stop thai's rankling forever on the court decision and for thailand and their people to respect the international treaty of 1907, the icj verdict of 1962, etc, etc... thank you and god bless cambodia.

Hun Sen is a PM with numerous college degrees and many stars on his shoulders; he should know a long time ago that the bilateral talks would not work. His choice of not seeking the UN help was beyond the majority of ordinary Cambodian comprehension. That is why you see on left side of this blog he has been branded as “TRAITOR” in many languages, and the truth hurts him very bad. Because of all the miseries that he has given to the nation, this mother fucker should not be born as Khmer, let alone being a PM.
You will see many Cambodian dancing on the streets when he will be toppled.

Last year Thailand did US a favor by extraditing a Russian arms dealer to be prosecuted in the US.
So now the US feels obligated to do anything to damaged Thailand's image.
