Japan To Provide US$94 Million To Cambodia Despite Quake Impact

PHNOM PENH, March 15 (Bernama) -- The government of Japan on Tuesday will provide a grant aid of US$94 million to Cambodia for social and economic development, though latter was severely hit by the massive earthquake and tsunami on March 11, reports China's Xinhua news agency.

The exchange of notes for the grant was signed between Cambodian Foreign Minister Hor Namhong and Masafumi Kuroki, Japanese ambassador to Cambodia, presided over by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen.

According to the media release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the aid will be used to implement three projects namely the flood and drainage improvement in Phnom Penh (US$45 million), replacement and expansion of water distribution system in provincial capitals (US$33.66 million) and improvement of equipment for demining activities (US$15.83 million), respectively.

The Friday's catastrophic earthquake in Japan, measuring 9.0 magnitudes on the Richter scale, has claimed 2,414 lives and left 3,118 others missing in Japan by 8:00 a.m. local time, said the Japanese National Police Agency.

I Think For this disaster moment
Cambodia Govt should stop to leech Japan money . Because Japan
is going to need more money to rebuild its own infrastructure ..
Receive those money is too embarrassing .

The Cambodian government should refuse this aid money, in honour of those who perished in the earth quake and tsunami.Hun Sen should just tighten the tax collection procedures and end corruption, even for a month, and the $94 millions will be in the government coffers.

Even in their most darkest hours, Japan still has the heart & charity to give aid money to Cambodia.

...aid money that will be pocketed into the bank accounts of Hun Sen and his CPP cronies.

It is a shame for corrupted Hun Sen Government, seeing Japanese government keep helping Cambodia in the difficult time. At this point, Hun Sen government looks very cheap, because we know that a good percentage of that money will be corrupted.

With my condolences to Japanese nation.

We cannot refuse this money, because it is already planned. So what we can do is to allocate some fund to help Japan in this time of crisis.

12.59PM,

even if it is already in the bank account of the Cambodian government, it should be transferred back and a nice letter of condolences be sent with it. It is no excuse to accept it "becasue it is already planned". Cambodia, if managed correctly, can easily come up with the replacement money. The whole amount ought to go back, not just some!

Cambodian Ministers have received aids over the years, millions after millions. This $94 million from Japan should be returned for the fund needed to rebuild the destroyed city, which was hit by the quake and tsunami. Cambodians would have no shame and hearts, if we are to keep the aid this time from Japan.

As one would say, "Helping a friend in need is a friend indeed". Please return the aid as they need it more than you.

Also I believe that the majority of this fund would go to private pockets, so please think of others in this tragic time, for this very time and not to take advantage once in your life time.

This shows how low Hun Sen and his government are towards foreign aids.

Let see how far can Hun Sen and his corrupted government spend the money from sweat and blood of many lives, and over the misery of many others.

a true or real economic powerful countries like japan is all about reputation as money can be pumped into their economy, despite the natural disaster japan is having now. i think japan will recover quickly because earthquakes and tsunami is a part of japan life i.e. they are know to live in the so-called ring of fire, and it had happened to japan before, and it probably won't be the last either. however, i think japan will find way to manage and live with this natural disaster, after all, japan, like cambodia, have a long history of existence, disasters, etc in their long history and so forth. may god bless japan and their people.

japan is the world's third largest economy after the USA and china; it used to be second after the USA, now third, still not bad! so, i think japan will inject lots of money to rebuild and improve protection against earthquake, tsunami, etc, you know! go japan go, japan is a very innovative, modern nation with ultramodern infrastructure, etc... japan will overcome fast, really!
