Border Conflict Helped by Ignorance: Scholar

Men Kimseng, VOA Khmer

"Students in Thailand know little about the history of Angkor Wat, while Cambodians remain unaware of their religious ties to Thailand."
While Cambodia and Thailand continue their protracted dispute over the border, scholars in the US said last week both neighbors should look deeper into their history and remove internal politics to ease the tension.

John Burgess, a longtime Washington Post reporter who has written a book about a Khmer temple in modern Thailand, told an audience in Washington last week the current crisis will ease once Thailand’s internal political situation calms and once Cambodia’s system of government opens up.

Burgess, author of “Stories in Stones: The Sdok Kok Thom Inscription and the Enigma of Khmer History,” told the Asian Society the situation would be calmer without Thais “thronging the streets and citing the loss of land to Cambodia” as a point of contention with the ruling administration.

While acknowledging that Thai-Cambodian conflicts have deep roots, he also noted that both countries have little understanding of their related histories. Students in Thailand know little about the history of Angkor Wat, while Cambodians remain unaware of their religious ties to Thailand, he said.

“I’ve always been shocked at how ignorant the two sides are of each other,” said the author, who became interested in the Sdok Kok Thom temple, near Aranyaprathet, Thailand, while covering Cambodian refugees in 1979. “Other than these wars that everybody knows about, there is basically almost zero comprehension on both sides of the border.”

Professor Thitinan Pongsudhirak of the Chulalongkorn University, who was a speaker at the discussion, agreed, saying both countries need to rewrite their textbooks and stop stereotyping each other.

“If you take the government and army aside in that area, people are okay,” he said. “They’ve been trading from 1962 to 2008 without a problem. In fact Thais can visit the temple and Cambodians vice versa, and foreign tourists.”

Now, however, troops from both sides are locked in a border standoff, one that has led to skirmishes and killings since 2008. Nationalistic groups in Thailand have seized on the border issue in an attempt to oust different administrations in Thailand since that time, while Cambodian officials have accused Thailand of attempting to take Cambodian land.

Thitinan said Cambodia had become a “pawn” in Thai politics, which are now heading toward an election, with anti-government protesters hoping to oust the current prime minister, Abhisit Vejjajiva.

Kem Sos, an independent analyst, agreed.

“There’re a lot of emotion, a lot of muscle, not much wisdom, not much legal procedure to solve the problem,” he said.

Cambodia was once a big country called Khmer Empire. But Cambodia was almost swallowed up by Yuon and Thai in the 20th century. Thai had swallowed as far as Battambang down to PohSath province. This shows that Thai has had intention to swallow Cambodia as much as Yuon has. But Thai only started to exist in the 12th century. Thai borrowed art and culture from Khmer. Thai magical scrip is written in Cambodian alphabets.
To say that Thai lost the thing that they never have is ridiculous. The word BangKok is also Cambodian word that supposed to sound Beoung kak just like Beoung Kak lake in Phnom Penh west of ChroyChangva bridge where people's home are now being destroyed by the ...

I am agreed with most the part but once, he has mentioned about two countries should rewrite history, I have to object, infact Cambodian nation have been ever missed leadind in this regards for any raison! but Siamese is always. To rewrite is affecting only Siame literally. Siamese has been attempting to change her nation name!, Siamese has been miss leading Khmer history to teaching Siamese & Thais nation's ofspring under the fake history, the one of which to raise Thais nationalist rallie against Cambodian actually. What is the real Siamese histry? howlong Siamese Gov't allowing this fake history draging on? until they conguer totally Cambodian' territory?, why Siamese Gov't has been ignoring an existing of Khmer nation? and why Siam nation has been copying Khmer' belonging?, why Siamese Gov't afraid to tell the truehistory? what is behind of these slicky move politically?. Yes the world should know!by now the critical smilling of Thais faces is mystical to most nations but not Cambodian people. Khmer existing nowaday is comparable to multiple needle in side their oculars thieves. No thank You, Siamese must be honest to the world to correct the history, teach their younger generation for a valid Khmer & Siam histories.

Khmer empire swallowed tribes and other kingdoms from the East Burma down to Malaysia. From farther China down to Lao to Champa and Khmer Krom.
Was Khmer empire an invader in the past 900 years in Southeast Asia?
After declining Khmer empire,Vietnam
invaded three Champa kingdoms. She took one Champa kingdom at a time until she took the whole Champa.
The Vietnam govt tried and tried again to swallow Cambodia,Chey Chetha II failed in love with princess king Vietnam daughter.
So,the Vietnam king few Khmer provinces to Vietnamese immigrants,
the Khmer king allowed his wife to take some piece of land to train
soldiers and Vietnamese immigrants.
In 1949 Vietnam swallowed the whole
Khmer Krom.
In 1970 Sihanouk called Vietcong to
invade Cambodia because he wanted to save monarchy and his own power.
In 1979,Hun Sen(Khmer Rouge),Chea Sim and Heng Samrin(Khmer Vietminh)
Please ask old generation about Khmer Vietminh.Thank.
Now Vietnam swallowed Lao completely.
Will Vietnam swallow Cambodia?
Yes,indeed.Maybe next Hun Sen term.
Thank God,Thaksin was out of power,
because he was close friend to Hun Sen.Vietnam will continue to take
Thai again;maybe the next century.
The Vietnam is a country doing politic with principle.
Cambodia and Cambodians must learn
from Vietnam and fight back with the same Vietnam political principle, not without political principles.

I dont agreed with this paragraph, we are not ties to Thailand but Thai does.

Back to Thai, I dont think we are going to do well with Siem. Most of their people had wrong educate about history, by taught to hate Khmer. I had some experience when I had travel to Africa and transit in Bangkok, they ask me this and that and finally asked me whether I have money to go there. It so crazy!!!
