Some 5,000 environmental activists on Saturday conducted the first annual campaign to clean the city aiming at raising awareness about environmental issues.
The event, held at Olympic Stadium, was participated by the Minister of Information Khieu Kanharith and the Governor of Phnom Penh Municipality Kep Chuk Tema. The event was organized by the Young Entrepreneurs Association of Cambodia.
All activists dressed in green T-shirts cleaned throughout roads in the city and distributed leaflets educating people to live with a clean life and stop throwing trashes at public places.
Khieu Kanharith said "clean roads and outdoor spaces reflect dignity and civilization of the residents in the city."
Phnom Penh is the capital and the largest city of Cambodia. It is a center of security, politics, economics, cultural heritage, and diplomacy, and all sectors have been developed well, but environment issue still poses a concern, he said.
"The city is still dirty due to increasing number of population and less awareness about environment issues," he said.
Phnom Penh is currently residing about 1.5 million people and disposes of about 1,000 tons of common wastes a day, according to the city hall.

Well, reason they are thinking about environment now because they could not find any place to take their family for New Year retreat. They were looking foor un-poluted water, and lust jungle like and could not any. They destroyed them all! So stupid!
