MANY spare hours of knitting were dedicated by Lorien Novalis students to help bring a smile to those in need.
The year 5 class from the Glenhaven school knitted cuddly gnome dolls to give to orphans in Cambodia.
They were moved when they learnt about the story of Tara Winkler, this year’s NSW Young Australian of the Year, who helped establish the Cambodian Children’s Trust.
Realising they too could make difference, the 11-year-olds started making the colourful dolls from woven bags for the children from the trust.
“Our students are very capable with their hands,” teacher Jacqueline Hadden said.
“They’ve been knitting and weaving since kindergarten, so they were able to work independently and helped each other to work out ways to accessorise.”
The students gave up their lunchtimes and home time to complete the gifts, which have now been received by the orphans along with personalised cards.
“So much work and thought has clearly gone into these gifts,” Tara Winkler’s personal assistant Marnie Walters said.
“All the volunteers here are so impressed with how beautiful the toys and bags are and how thoughtful and personalised each card was.”
The students are now collecting craft materials to make their second lot of gifts for the Cambodian orphans.
They will make how-to books that will teach orphans how to make some of the things the students have made at the school over the years.
