A leading US senator has added his voice to a growing chorus of international opposition to a proposed dam on the mekong River in Laos.

Democrat Senator Jim Webb, chair of the Committee on Foreign Relations Subcommittee on East Asian and Pacific Affairs, Thursday issued a statement raising concerns over the Xayaburi dam project, which could get the go-ahead next week.

Officials from Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam, through which the lower mekong flows, are to decide on April 22 whether the project is to proceed.

The Xayaburi hydropower dam is the first of 11 planned on the lower mekong mainstream.

"This is a dangerously harmful precedent as it relates to the environmental health of South-East Asia," Webb warned.

"Numerous scientific studies have concluded that construction of the Xayaburi dam and other proposed mainstream dams will have devastating environmental, economic, and social consequences for the entire mekong sub-region," he said.

Mr. Sam Rainsy is the sun that shine bright in all Cambodians heart and mind unlike Dr. Hun Sen murdered thousands khmer lives and cut off 30 000 km2 of Cambodia to Vietnam as personal gift.

Ms. Rattana Keo is so stubborn to stand by her Koh Tral and sea area over 30 000 km2, even PM Hun Sen has to kill her whole families, she is still stand by her Koh Tral and 30 000 km2 of Cambodia sea area that PM Hun Sen gives to Vietnam as gift. That is not too bad for one Khmer girl; in fact it is very bravery hero of Cambodian women today. She is represented that Khmer women are not just for sex slave but can become a Khmer leader who do not fear of PM Hun Sen blackmail or black magic.

Cambodia need more people like Ms Rattana Keo to be honest.

Do Cambodian men around the world brave enough and dare enough to speak the true and stand by the true like Ms Rattana Keo? Do you?

Good on you smart Khmer girl Ms Rattana Keo, Good girl. Don’t give up on post about Koh Tral at least you do remind Cambodians every day.

I hope Cambodian government forcefully oppose the project. I understand that Laos desperately need this dam to generate income for this land-lock country, but in the expense of the biodiversity of Mekong and downstream population.

Since Laos was under the control of Communist Vietnam Hanoi. There are some of Yuon high ranking members (similar to CPP Yuon members - Hun Sen's comrades) are behind all of the Dam Projects that will destroy the natural habitats in the Mekong regions.

I am glad that there are opposition members including the U.S. Senator Jim Webb and Cambodian counterparts joining the banning plan against the Dam Project in Laos.

There will be an alternative solutions to build the Power plants in Laos. Please Laotian people don't allow the Communist Vietnamese members from Hanoi involve the Dam that will destroy the ecosystems in Laos, Cambodia and Khmer Krom (Southern Vietnam).

I don't trust Thai and Communist Vietnamese leaders to allow this disastrous dam.

i think people in southeast asia need to get educated on the effect the dam will impact on the livelihood and environment, etc in cambodia and so forth. i think also, they sound look into finding solution for electricity demand in cambodia as well. please help find solution to electricity shortage in cambodia. cambodia is growing and need more electricity so we do lack behind other regional countries, you know! cambodia have been lacking behind in many way for a long time now, so, it is time to awake cambodia to the good, convenient, higher standard of living and doing business, etc, so cambodia, too, can be integrated into the regional growth and world community, etc. of course, don't we all want cambodia to contribute to the world as well! then stop depriving cambodia of convenience, modern way of life, etc. cambodia need electricity to bright up our cities, provinces, countryside, factories, parks, etc, etc, ok! god bless cambodia.

The Lao state is under Vietnam govt
control, she has no voice to build
Xayabury dam crossing Mekong river.
Vietnam needs more money to put in
his own pocket.
Lao and Cambodian leaders always listen to their boss.Lao is fully
controlled by Vietnam govt, but Cambodia is 80% controlled by Viet.
Mr. Jim Webb was a Vietnam war veteran. He knew what Vietnam will
intend to improve Viet economy and
destroy and pollute water in lower
state countries.
Thank Mr Jim Webb for speaking up
against not to pollute water or cause the flood in lower zone.
