U.S. wants calm on Thai-Cambodia border

WASHINGTON, April 26 (UPI) -- The Thai and Cambodian governments are called on to settle their differences peacefully, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton advised.

Cambodia accused Thailand of using poison gas during fighting along their shared border, though Bangkok denies the charges.

Border conflicts between the two Asian nations are centered on an 11th-century temple, listed as a World Heritage Site in 2008. The international courts ruled in 1962 that the Preah Vihear temple was in Cambodia though parts of the overall temple grounds are in Thai territory.

Clinton, in a statement, said Washington was "deeply concerned" by reports of violence along the Thailand-Cambodia border.

"We strongly urge both sides to exercise restraint, refrain from provocative acts and immediately take all necessary steps to reduce tensions and avoid further conflict," she said.

Thailand after earlier clashes erupted in February rejected an offer to have U.N. peacekeeping troops sent to the area. The United Nations said troops would be sent in only if both sides were in agreement and they were part of bilateral cooperation between the countries.

Yes!

Traitor Hun Sen had violated the Paris Peace Agreement first by letting Vietnam encraoching Khmer eastern borders, so Thailand wants parts of Khmer territories too.

Why not???

If you notice American only say calm when Khmer fired back to Thai side.

It is obvious that American help Thai more than Khmer Nation Victim.

Don't forget American used to bomb Cambodia with their B-52 killed at least 500 000 innocent cambodian people at that time but American try to silence it badly.

Human Right! HumanRight! The victims of B-52 bomb

Be calm everyone, I know that you are very upset at this point. You shouldn't use the F...word toward the US. You are right about Thailand is the US allies but US also wants to build a good relationship with Cambodia as well. However, whoever started the fire, US has to tell both to stop. It is a proper way to state it. As in your family, you have to stop both of kids from fighting first then we'll talk in detail later. To tell one side to stop is like you point finger to that side that it's wrong which is not going to work and just build up more tension. On the other hand, I hope the US will fair to both side at the end. And we need their support and effort to stop this conflict.

5:58,
The US is not supporting Thailand against Cambodia. Both are alies. Since Thailand buys some of its weapons from the US and Cambodia is a participant in the military "Partnership For Peace" with the US, the US has responsibility to both of our friends to help better relations. The US is asking Thailand to stop being the aggressor and Cambodia to use restraint. Preach Vihear belongs to Cambodia. I have read on this web site that the people who live there on both sides do not want this war. They know that the area is a benefit to both sides. Tourism flowing both ways across the border helps everyone. The present Thai gov is using the issue to distract its citizens from its corruption. We, the US, knows Cambodia is defending itself. Appeal to the US for help too.

Please don't say any more that Preah Vihar ground situated in Thai Territory. It was absolutely wrong. You are Ki-Team must think before you publish. don't work like a Dog. Hearing the voice and Bark.

Preah Vihar and its ground were in her own territory of Khmer.

Mind your language guys.

6:54 and 8:00 am,
I agree with you. However, I wish UN, ASEAN, and US take a concrete action. one side asked for help, another side refuse any intervention. Just standing and telling both sides to stop without put a hand to separate them from fighting doesn't work or only temporaitly work.

VietCong and CPP regime has used systematic torture, wrongful convictions, and land eviction to the Cambodia people. This is equivalent to poison gas used else where by dictatorship countries.

The vietCong and CPP are the terrorists in SE Asia today, particularly Cambodia and Lao.
