Border spat heads to UN court

THE HAGUE — The UN’s highest court is to have public hearings later this month after Cambodia requested an order against Thailand to withdraw its troops from a disputed border area, the court said yesterday.

Locked in a bitter quarrel with Thailand over an patch of land around the ancient Preah Vihear temple, Cambodia late last month filed the urgent request before the International Court of Justice, based in The Hague.

“The International Court of Justice will hold public hearings in the case,” the ICJ said in a statement adding the hearings “will be devoted to the request for the indication of provisional measures filed by Cambodia.”

“This means the hearing will focus specifically on Cambodia’s urgent request for an order for Thai troop withdrawal,” a source close to the court said.

The hearings on May 30 and 31, will be in the form of oral submissions from both countries.

The UN court ruled in 1962 the 11th-century Khmer temple belonged to Cambodia, but both Phnom Penh and Bangkok claim ownership of the 4.6-square-kilometre surrounding area.

Cambodia last month asked the ICJ to explain that ruling, with the ICJ saying it would rule on a clarification at a later stage.

Khmer government should never ask the IJC to clarify what it ruled over 40 yrs ago. It makes more sense if Thai government to request the IJC. Thai are laughing the way Khmer gov is doing. This mean Thai has a second chance on the disputing land. Khmer gov is surely stupid. The chance of favoring Khmer & Thai is 50%/50%.

1:57 PM Pang Sokheoun,

So what you suggest the Gov. to do?
Go to war with siam? What are you thinking.

You ought to renew your MS degree in Political or rewrite your Thesis. I'm eager to read if there was one. Moron!

That's laughable Sokhoeun! Is it really you who wrote that?

Not only you Sokhoeun, but whoever wrote that crab is not a genuine postgraduate degree.

For your future references, the temple of Preah Vihear is not magically fallen down from the sky as in a fairytale. It is a construction built in scientific way. Many scholars said that during that time not many nations had ability to build such facilities.

Not only Khmer per se, but others are proud of this architecture.

The surrounding area, e.g. 4.6 km2, is part of architectural plan of the temple. Thailand of course has been attempting to play word issued by the IJC in 1962.

You may know as well that we Khmer don't have a military capability like Thai. So the legal way is always the better way.

Justice is always prevail no matter how long need to wait for. As the matter of fact we have been waiting for so long - approximately 500 years.

Sokhoeun,

- Did you complete the master degree in political science?

- Where did or do you study the degree?

- Since when you become a political analyst?

- Who are your lecturers?

Your argument is entirely dumbo!

Went through quickly at your webpage and nothing to debate about what we are talking here.

Your webpage seems a bit more like a drama show rather than giving away the opinions and argument reflecting the Cambodian politics.

Not mindful with your business, but a common sense should be adhered and professionalism maintained.

Otherwise, no matter what you have completed degree at somewhere else doesn't mean you become a political analyst automatically.
