ICJ set to hear debate over Hindu Khmer temple

THE HAGUE, Netherlands, May 19 (UPI) -- The International Court of Justice said Thursday that hearings were scheduled next week on a request to review a 1962 ruling on the Preah Vihear temple.

Public hearings are set for Monday and Tuesday at the Hague to consider the 1962 case, a dispute between Cambodia and Thailand over sovereignty.

Cambodia called on the ICJ to clarify the meaning of a ruling on the Preah Vihear temple. Cambodia notes that the court ruled that it has sovereignty over the temple as a "direct and automatic consequence of its sovereignty over the territory on which the temple is situated," the court said in a May 3 summary. Furthermore, Thailand is under an obligation to pull its forces out of the area.

"Cambodia asserts that Thailand disagrees with all of these points,'" the summary read.

Conflicts between Cambodia and Thailand are centered on the 11th-century temple listed as a World Heritage Site in 2008. International courts ruled in 1962 that the temple was in Cambodia though parts of the temple grounds are in Thai territory.

Thai and Cambodian forces agreed to a shaky cease-fire in late April following a week of border clashes between the Asian neighbors over the area.

Khmer government should never ask the IJC to clarify what it ruled over 40 yrs ago. It makes more sense if Thai government to request the IJC. Thai are laughing the way Khmer gov is doing. This mean Thai has a second chance on the disputing land. Khmer gov is surely stupid. The chance of favoring Khmer & Thai is 50%/50%.

the icj ruling is permanent, given the statute of limitations siem ignored has expired long ago. also, i'm glad we asked icj to reinterpret and clarify their ruling so siem thugs can stop thinking this cased was outdated and ignored it again! let icj tell siem thugs one more time to respect the international law, treaty, etc, etc. everybody will see how cambodia feel about siem violation of the international law, etc, etc...

the world should tell siem thugs to stop taking advantage of cambodia again! maybe cambodia ought to demand the return of all of our old khmer provinces that siem thugs stole from us during our dark ages era, etc! apparently, siem thugs seemed to think they didn't have enough of khmer land, territories, temples, etc, etc, you know! someone in the superpower status should tell siem thugs to stop violating the international law, international treaty, etc, etc. just siem thugs once was abled to steal from cambodia, doesn't they can just keep on stealing again and again from cambodia, really! cambodia is not made from stealing, ok!

7:03 AM, it's you who's stupid. The Cambodian Gov't is doing the right thing. The only setback or regret is that it should have done that long time ago since the very first time the Siams intruded on our land.
