Authorities re-inaugurated Phnom Penh’s 74-year-old New Market on Wednesday, following a years-long renovation.
Eric Beugnot, country director for the French Development Agency, said the facelift was done with the “historic quality” of the market in mind.
New Market, known to many foreigners and tourists as Central Market, was repainted in a yellow reminiscent of its French colonial past, with roadways along the side widened.
The market, which first opened in 1937, has 3,000 shops, ranging from stationary and electronics, to rice, meat and trinkets for tourists.

It is too serious at the moment as the origin architecture/style and environment was changed. Now it is too narrow, no space, no park as before because park and land around built small stores. Kep Chum built all around as the stores sold high price. He just built them for money and never think of what the environment around the market. It is called the economic government. It is not environment government.My God,it is no space to breath air at Phsar Thmey and looks as a ten market and messy super market at the moment.
