Thailand deserves Hun Xen's thuggish display ... He is no worse than Prayuth Chan-ocha, lest Thailand forgets its own perfidious behavior!

'Thuggish' display at summit a threat to Asean solidarity, and year ahead

When Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and Foreign Minister Hor Nam Hong attacked Thailand at the Jakarta summit as an aggressor, it was with a heavy dose of malicious intent. Their poor manners surprised Asean colleagues at all levels. During the ministerial meeting on Friday, Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa had to cut the former Khmer Rouge leader off before the Thai-Cambodian conflict split any further. It represented the lowest point of Asean diplomacy, which has prided itself on discreet and effective dealings.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva responded to Hun Sen's allegation in a calm and assured manner. He categorically stated that Thailand had no intention whatsoever of engaging in any conflict with neighbours and countries in the region. In the case of Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya's rebuttal, he was right in responding to Cambodian vitriol, stating that the conflict had been raised and briefed by the chair as part of the progress report. The matter should be dealt with bilaterally, as has always been the case. He emphasised that the more important issues of Asean community building should be the topic of the day. That objective reminded Asean ministers of the ultimate objective of Asean - which was set up 1967 - to put all Southeast Asian countries under one roof. Can Asean allow such a thuggish attitude to prevail and destroy the group's solidarity and spirit of cooperation? This is essentially the first time a foreign minister had such bad taste to go all out at a plenary session.

Thailand and Cambodia are currently working hard, despite a lack of quick success, on various confidence-building measures to end the border dispute. Somehow, it seems Cambodia enjoys the game of brinkmanship at the expense of Thailand under Prime Minister Abhisit, who is trying to set things in order at home. He is calling for a new election in July after the dissolution of the House of Representative next week. Indeed, Cambodia knows how to score and hurt Thailand.

Lest we forget, this was the same bullying tactic that Cambodia used in 2008 at Singapore when Thailand was struggling with its own domestic problems. Phnom Penh tried to internationalise the conflict over the Hindu temple at Preah Vihear, and brought the issue to the UN Security Council as well as Asean. At the time, Cambodia's appeal was sent right back by the UNSC. It was during the second flare-up of border conflict in February this year that the matter was pushed forward to the Security Council again. Rightly, the issue was given to Asean to deal with as an intra-regional conflict. As the chair, Indonesia has done a great deal in bridging perception and procedural gaps between the two protagonists.

It remains to be seen how this will play out in the future as Cambodia has also referred the matter to the World Court for reinterpretation of the decision made in 1962 which stated that the temple belonged to Cambodia. It did not rule on the exact boundary between both countries, however. In response, Thailand also established its own legal experts to fight the case, which is expected to cause further tension between the two neighbours. As long as the conflict remains unresolved, the future Asean chair, Cambodia, will next year be at jeopardy if it seeks to drag Asean further and deeper into a quagmire of bilateral politics.

Whoever wrote this article chose to ignore historical facts totally and for that reason there is no point in arguing with him/her.

Bilateral talk can only work if Cambodia is as big and strong as Thailand! Imagine a quarrel between an adult and a young child and we expect them to solve their problems on their own. Of course, they can do that, but obviously the yount child will be at disavantage in the settlement.

For your information, Mr or Miss writer of the Nation, Cambodia would be very stupid to continue to solve Preah Vihear problems bilaterally because it won't go anywhere!

You should go back and restudy your history to learn, and please do learn, that your nation historically stole lots of land from Cambodia; have you ever asked yourself why so many people in your country speak Khmer? Look at your alphabets and you should ask why they are so muck like Cambodian! Look at many technical words you are using daily in your own language, have you ever wondered why they sound so much like Cambodian words?

You know full well that your country has taken so much land from Cambodia and perhaps as an educated person, you should be ashamed, if not much since you have no guilt, at least enough to not desire Cambodian land to the point that you had the courage to write such an insulting and absurd article praising your Prime Minister and attcking that of a country whose land and temples you are still trying to rob in our modern time.

Agree, it is not a Hindu Temple. It is Khmer temple built by Khmer people. Cambodia is doing the right thing by bringing the dispute to the world attention so Thailand can't continue to bully it. Now the world know it is not Cambodia that is bringing about the conflict. The conflict is driven by Thai internal conflict and its only purpose is to divert the Thailand's internal conflict to the border dispute and to drum up nationalism among among its people.

I want to see Sihamoni speaking about his country if he is real King of Cambodia. He needed to protecting and saving Cambodia from the Vietnamese expansion now.

Southeast Asians (leaders and politicians) in general are the most whining, complaining and lazy idiots of Asia. They only know how to bitch about everything and blame things on one another. ASEAN is a club for 2nd rate loser statesmen who won't and can never belong anywhere else. Just give all of Southeast Asia to China for management. China will teach these Southeast Asian boys how to grow up and become real men.

Myanmar = Fat stupid military generals dressing up in uniforms & parading their fat selves & stroking each other's fat egos.

Thailand = Confused & delusional. Has no sense of history and still figuring out its own self-identity.

Laos = Special Administrative Region of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. Does Laos even exist???

Cambodia = Leaders are the sluts of Hanoi and Cambodia is their brothell in which everything is for sale.

Vietnam = Cheap 2nd rate imitation of China. Will ALWAYS be China's little bastard brother no matter what lifetime.

Malaysia = Another Muslim-infested twat of a country. Half decent though.

Singapore = Pretty decent city-state, but I hear things are becoming a little fucked up.

Philippines = One of the most backstabbing, idiotic, annoying & backwards group of people in the world. They have this false sense of everything. Oh, they are hypocritical Catholics who will ALL go to hell.

Brunei = Do we even care about this tiny ass country????

Indonesia = A larger Malaysia, but without the glamor.

The writer of this article in the nation is itself a thugh and bullying liar etc. It is fabricating and trying to create negative image of Cambodia while Thailand itself is surrounded by rogue leaders.

Thaksin was so popular leader. The rogue yellow shit group pretend to be loyal to their king because they wre so hungry like a wolf. The king believed them that one day thaksin will be more popular than him and then endorsed a coupe.

That is thai story

the temple wasn't built for Khmer..

Angkorians did used Khmer as their slave to build it.. and if you said to a angkorian guy that he is khmer... I don't think he will enjoy it..
Khmer ethnicity was slave of Angkorian.. Angkorian who disappear after Thai attack.. maybe from flu?? who know..
and Khmer should hate Angkorian has much as they hate the Vietnamese...
there is a lot of proof, for example Khmers don't know about Angkorian history, they can't even read what it's write on Angkor watt temple...

people talk about history, but what u guys really know about Angkorian history? it's good to lecture but the fact is.. that damn temple was made with a lot of Khmer blood and sweat..

guys, u should realize what this horrible temple has been made of.. how many slave have been crush under the rock... people think it's legend, but it's true..
at the time, Angkorian who practice "black magic", they did made a lot of sacrifice in order to protect their temple from evil spirits.

Few books talk about practice and about the mystery behind the construction of royal Thai temples and Angkorian temple ...

4:07 AM,

You are full of shit with your newly learnt history lesson about Cambodia and her temples.

How old are you? How do you know that the books you have read are correct; after all, they are the minority in term of historical documents?

A language does change overtime!

Go and ask the Chineses of the present time to see how many of them can read the original writings of Confucius.

Actually, I am glad that we have border problems with Thailand, that way the world can learn more Thailand, the expansionist country and the trouble maker. They took 7 Khmer provinces during WW II, only to give back 3 and told the world they lost territory to Cambodia. Now, they are doing the same thing claiming out of nothing, and hoping to get something out of it. The world keeps getting fooled by this one trouble maker country.

Prah Vihear belong forever to Khmer because Thai (Sokon Thai and Ayuthyea) were/are immigrants from South China during Mogoly's Invasion (1204-1296) and later they conquered Khmer Empire and claim Angkor Wat belong to them.

Koh Tral Island must not be forgotten

By Ms. Rattana Keo

Why do Koh Tral Island, known in Vietnam as Phu Quoc, a sea and land area covering proximately over 30,000 km2 [Note: the actual land size of Koh Tral itself is 574 square kilometres (222 sq miles)] have been lost to Vietnam by whose treaty? Why don’t Cambodia government be transparent and explain to Cambodia army at front line and the whole nation about this? Why don't they include this into education system? Why?

Cambodian armies are fighting at front line for 4.6 km2 on the Thai border and what's about over 30,000km2 of Cambodia to Vietnam. Nobody dare to talk about it! Why? Cambodian armies you are decide the fate of your nation, Cambodian army as well as Cambodian people must rethink about this again and again. Is it fair?

Koh Tral Island, the sea and land area of over 30,000 square kilometres have been lost to Vietnam by the 1979 to 1985 treaties. The Cambodian army at front line as well as all Cambodian people must rethink again about these issues. Are Cambodian army fighting to protect the Cambodia Nation or protecting a very small group that own big lands, big properties or only protecting a small group but disguising as protecting the Khmer nation?

The Cambodian army at front lines suffer under rain, wind, bullets, bombs, lack of foods, lack of nutrition and their families have no health care assistance, no securities after they died but a very small group eat well, sleep well, sleep in first class hotel with air conditioning system with message from young girls, have first class medical care from oversea medical treatments, they are billionaires, millionaires who sell out the country to be rich and make the Cambodian people suffer every day.

Who signed the treaty 1979-1985 that resulted in the loss over 30,000 km2 of Cambodia??? Why they are not being transparent and brave enough to inform all Cambodians and Cambodian army at front line about these issues? Why don't they include Koh Tral (Koh Tral size is bigger than the whole Phom Phen and bigger than Singapore [Note: Singapore's present land size is 704 km2 (271.8 sq mi)]) with heap of great natural resources, in the Cambodian education system?

Look at Hun Sen's families, relatives and friends- they are billionaires, millionaires. Where did they get the money from when we all just got out of war with empty hands [in 1979]? Hun Sen always say in his speeches that Cambodia had just risen up from the ashes of war, just got up from Year Zero with empty hands and how come they are billionaires, millionaires but 90% of innocent Cambodian people are so poor and struggling with their livelihood every day?

Koh Tral was a Cambodian island, and technically and legally, remained a Cambodian island until today.

Smart Khmer girl Ms. Rattana Keo,

Having studied south est asia history and civilisation from french INALCO research..
what about u guys?

French researchers know better about khmer history than most cambodian does..
and even the few chinese documents relate about cambdodia past and the angkorian empire.. show about the angkorian civilisation..

tell me, how can you explain why khmer can't read and describe all the writing on the Angkor Watt wall?

some may said i talk about shit, it's okay cause with the time, researchers, a better technologie and science will prove about Angkorian (high society) civilisation was different than the other khmer (low society) civilisation...

even when khmers under french sovereignty show that they know few things about their past.. and very very few about angkorian...

u can believe whatever u want.. i don't ask you to believe what i just say.

authority lack of professionalism or ethical code of conduct, i think! cambodia can use ethical code of conduct and professionalism training in gov't and higher people, really! there seemed to be a lack of this concept in gov't carry of task daily, i think! yes, without code of conduct, people will always be people, really! so set the difference between professionalism and those without them, ok!
