PHNOM PENH — Cambodia's royal oxen shunned rice grain on Saturday during an ancient ceremony to predict the country's agricultural fortunes -- prompting fears of a poor rice harvest among superstitious farmers.
King Norodom Sihamoni presided over the ritual in a park outside the palace where thousands of people watched royal astrologers observing the animals' behaviour.
After a symbolic ploughing of a portion of the field, a pair of oxen were led to seven dishes -- rice, corn, beans, sesame, grass, water and alcohol -- laid out on trays.
They were seen eating only corn and beans, allowing the palace's chief astrologer Kang Ken to declare that this year's corn and beans harvests will be bountiful.
The astrologer did not spell out to the crowd what it meant for the rice yield, sparking concern among farmers.
"I am very worried that we will not have a good rice harvest," farmer Ros Makara, 52, told AFP after the ceremony, which marks the start of Cambodia's rainy season, traditionally the time to plant rice.
"But I will try my best to grow rice. I do not totally rely on the prediction," he added.
While still taken seriously by many rural Cambodians in this deeply superstitious country, ploughing ceremony predictions have been called into question in recent years.

It is simply a tradition with no real significant predicting power about future rice harvest and many Cambodians know that so it is about time to educate those who are still superstitious to know that hard work and due deligence are the keys to success here.
It should put Hun Xen and his wife, try to predict from those trays instead of oxs...ah..ha..!

They should starve these cows a day or two on the eve of the ceremony, and then I would like to find out if these cows eat everything.
It could be that the cows(oxen)could smell death in the rice grain due to genetic modification. If the oxen refused, how could it not affect the health of it's people who eat GM rice? The oxen are smarter than the astrologer.
Starving the Oxen might help; what about bringing the horny cow - have all CPP see the action including the King!

All we need to do ask for the UN and international communities, NATO and powerful countries and EU to put pressures on the Evil communist Hanoi bastards. That is a start.

Therefore, Cambodia can be very independent and get some help like the U.S., South Korea, and other high tech countries to help provide technology and other high tech and help educate youn Khmer people or youths (entire country of Cambodia) to the better future. Under Communist bastards in Hanoi and CPP Yuon officials who work or serve Hun Sen as the administrators, many Khmer youths and children do not get access to higher educations and then build or rebuild Cambodia nation to be a prosperous country...

You are so stupid. Just leave the current King alone. Sihamoni is different from his father. You need to educate yourself. Sihanouk is the one who made the big mistake, allowing Vietcong to enter Cambodia during the American war. What wrong with you? You need to think, idiot.
i know, it is wrong to assume that king sihamoni is like this father, sihanouk, you know! even though he is the son of the former king, he is very different from his father. one, he's not married to many wives like his father, he's not in politics like his father, he's doing the right this for khmer people and cambodia. he's a law abiding king and citizen of cambodia, he's not ambitious like his father, he's worldy educated, he's lived through the dark years of the KR brutality as a young man, he's love khmer people and cambodia, he's merily a sybolic or ceremonial king which is in accordance to the nation's constitution, etc, etc. so, just because he was the son of sihanouk, doesn't mean he is the exact same person like his father, you know. it is wrong and ignorant to assume that, not to mention that stereotyping him to be like his father is a sign or ignorant people, really! study psychology and you will understand that no two people are the exact same trait, personality, education, intelligence, cowardice, or any other personal traits, etc, etc, ok! get educated already, ok! stop being so ignorant for too long already, ok! everybody in the world is different from each other in many way, although we are related or son or daughter or parents, etc, etc of the person, ok! remember that, ok! that's all!
