PHNOM PENH: Four top leaders of the brutal Khmer Rouge regime are to go on trial for genocide at Cambodia's UN-backed war crimes court in a case described as the world's most complex in decades.
The trial, seen as vital to healing the traumatised nation's deep scars, has been long awaited by survivors of a regime that wiped out nearly a quarter of the population during its reign of terror in the late 1970s.
It follows the conviction of a Khmer Rouge prison chief last year in the court's first case.
The elderly defendants - ''Brother Number Two'' Nuon Chea, the former head of state Khieu Samphan, the former foreign minister Ieng Sary and the former social affairs minister Ieng Thirith - are to appear at an initial hearing tomorrow.
They face a string of charges, including genocide, over the deaths of up to two million people from starvation, overwork and torture, or execution, during the regime's rule from 1975 to 1979.
The genocide charges relate specifically to the killings of Vietnamese people and Muslims belonging to the Cham ethnic group.
All four deny the accusations and the trial, the tribunal's second, will probably take years.
''It's the most important trial that will ever be heard in this court,'' the international co-prosecutor Andrew Cayley said.
''There hasn't been a case as large and complex as this since Nuremberg,'' he said, referring to the landmark Nazi trials after World War II.
The initial hearing is scheduled to take place over four days and will focus on expert and witness lists and preliminary legal objections.
Full testimony from the elderly accused, who have been in detention since their arrests in 2007, is not expected until August at the earliest.
It is the culmination of years of preparation by the war crimes tribunal, which was established in 2006 after almost 10 years of negotiations between Cambodia and the United Nations.

This ECCC or Khmer Rouge Trials has failed long ago because of the following: 1. This ECCC in not independent. 2. Political interference from Hun Sen. 3. Everything this ECCC has done for over 3 years since 2007 has been very secretive and not fully informed the public (the victims ). 4. Big scandal of corruption to obstruct the court process ( ECCC ) of Case 002. 5. Detaining suspects beyond detaining time (over 3 years ) to avoid fully public hearing of Case 002. If Case 002 undergoes public hearing there will be many other countries involved one of them is Yuon Hanoi who formed Khmer People's Revolutionary Party and later on Known as CPP. So the real killers of Khmer innocent people are still at large that to say CPP and yuon Hanoi the mastermind of killing field between 1975-1979 in Cambodia. To back up my above comment all these answers are in Indochina Federation formed by late Ho Chi Minh after 1930. ( one of Khmer Issarak group led by Son Ngoc Minh later on known as Khmer Viet Minh fought against French colony during 1946-1954 till 1954 Geneva conference about Cambodia ) We are the victims of killing field between 1975-1979 must know the real Khmer history at least between 1930-2011 so we know when and how yuon Hanoi formed CPP. So this ECCC is 100% a failure to find justice for 1.7 million of Khmer victims. So Case 002 will face a lot of obstacles , not fully public hearing.
Hu Nim, Hou Youn and Khieu Samphan are good friedns and good men among other Khmer. For those who see Khiev Samphan as an evil please do a proper research about Khieu Samphn for instance Khieu Samphan has no money in the local bank and oversea bank . All I want to say and see what happen in our Khmer society in the future is to see the truth and the truth is not every one is a killer for instance: 1. Not every single one of CPP is bad. 2. Not every single one of Khmer Viet Minh is bad. 3. Not every single one of Sam Rainsy Party is perfect.
4. Not every Khmer Rouge is a killer. As 5:01 says he or she refer to Khieu Samphan 's wife So Socheat so poor បានប្ដីដូចគេដូចអែងអដរ ទាស់អែអាប្ដីហ្នឹងជាប្ដីចំកួែ គ ើប្បានជារស់រគហ្មរហាមរគប្ៀប្ហ្នឹង as I say above Khieu Sam has no money in local or Camabodian bank or oversea bank that why his wife So Socheat រស់រគហ្មរហាមរគប្ៀប្ហ្នឹង . But I respect whoever with that high profile has not committed corruption . As far as I know Khieu Sam , Hu Nim and Hou Yuon hate corruption to their bone. I respect you all. Note: Sam Rainsy also personally uncorrupt. I am not Sam Rainsy Party member.
A real brief truth story about Khieu Seng Kim :
1. Khieu Seng Kim is a younger brother of Khieu Samphan since Khieu Samphan left Phnom Penh in 1967 to escape Sihanouk arrest to the jungle Khieu Seng Kim never see Khieu Samphan from 1967-1998 till Khieu Samphan came to Pailin in 1998 ( from 1975-1979 Seng Kim wanted to see his brother but Khiev Seng Kim never see Khieu Samphan till 1998 ).
2. khieu Seng Kim lived Phnom Penh with Lon Nol till 17th April 1975 , Khieu Seng Kim and his family were evacucated from Phnom Penh as other Phnom Penh city people on April 17, 1975 and lived in a small remote village from 1975-1979 in Srok Chamka Leu, Kompong Cham till yuon invaded Cambodia in 1979 he and his family came back to Phnom Penh and has lived in Phnom Penh under Hun Sen regime till 2011.
3: Khieu Seng Kim now living and so poor in Phnom Pen ( 2011 ) .
The real reasons I bring this up ( about Khieu Seng Kim ) because of the following:
1. Not every single one of CPP is bad.
Not every single one of Khmer Viet Minh is bad.
Not every single one of Sam Rainsy Party is perfect.
4. Not every Khmer Rouge is a killer.
We all have right to blame or hate Khieu Samphan but please do a proper research you will see Khieu Sam is a good person like Hu Nim , Hou Youn among other Khmer people.
I do not want to bring up the name Mr. Hu Nim and Hou Yuon ( which I honestly and personally respect for what they did for Khmer )society )but let me put this way if Hu Nim and Hou Youn still alive I am sure some Khmer will see Mr. Hu Nim , Hou Youn and Khieu Samphabn as evils which is totally wrong for what they done for Khmer society .

Not all Camboidan hate or dislike Khieu Samphan, Hu Nim and Hou Youn because they seen and heard what these 3 nominal KR leader done for Khmer society.
Khieu Samphan Hu Nim, Hou Youn were and is a very good men after I talked to many elderly Cambodian in Cambodia especially the poor in the countryside.
Because those elderly Cambodian living condition is very poor do have internets so they will never have any chance to express or make any comment about Khieuv Samphan, Hu Nim and Hou Youn.

Because every interview done by both Khmer and foreign journalists with Khieu Samphan he never refuse that no million innocient Khmer lives killed during 1975-1979 even some media upload this interview about killing field and so far still available on internet.
