Small Market Vendors Squeezed by High Government Tax

Psar Nath is the main market in Battambang town built by the French in the 1960′s. Early this week, over 200 vendors, mainly women marched to the office of the provincial governor. The governor has increased the rental of the stalls while business is slow. Over 1,000 vendors rent stalls at the market.

Stories I heard when visiting the markets are similar from stall to stall. The business is slow. Farmers have less money to spend. Civil servants and workers can not afford to buy goods. The high price of gasoline is another factor affecting to the hard times of the market vendors.

The market has no proper toilet facilities. Some vendors who can not afford to pay the extra dime for each time they use the private toilet facility must be creative and build a corner in their small stall that is hidden by a plastic curtain. To women, this is shame.

There is a felt level of fear among those vendors who have spoken up. After I left the market, one of the most outspoken vendors was approached by the head of the market committee and scolded by the rest of the fearful vendors for having told me the truth.

The issue will be raised at the next meeting with the governor by my local teams. We will continue to visit the vendors and inform them of their rights and engage them in developing strategies to continue the dialogue with the office of the governor.

Disgraced Mu Sochua’s problem all along, is that she is trying to be a politician. She's not, never has been and quite obviously, never will be. She should have just been herself, provide alternative policies and show Khmer people what a great alternative MP opposition she would be. Instead, her foray into being a politician has been a disaster. She comes across as pretending to be something she's not.

While the nation is facing complex economic, social and environmental issues disgraced Mu Sochua tried to promote her political stunt, aimed to get media attention. If this wasn’t such a clear demonstration of her selfish pursuit of personal ambition it would be laughable. There is no doubt that Mu Sochua has no real regard for the best interest of the nation. She is driven solely by a desire to become a “Champion of Women or new Aung San Suu Kyi” by any means available to her, even if that has the potential to destabilize the country. Even worse when many Khmer were suffering by Thailand's invasion on 4-7 February and late April this year, she was no where to be seen and enjoy herself in overseas.

People of integrity admit their faults, make amends and are judged fairly...Disgrace Mu Sochua is lacking in integrity and common sense and tries to change Cambodia into her own world.

Khmer sydney, well I am khmer-Aust, I don't think you are Khmer-Aust, I think you are CPP member and pretending to be called 'khmer sydney'as you nick name, huh! I don't buy it, because in Aust, we adore activists, especially the opposition leaders. We adore all political leaders, we respect them and we admire them. Without them, the country is as good as being a dead country and nation. So, every country needs both Labour, liberal and other parties to join in to debate and comes down to the same common interests and common goals to benefit country and nation. So, Khmer sydney, stop using our Aust-name for your own critical critism for Madam Mu, because we don't support your ideal of judging her. As I said before, all Aust support educated people not condemn them like you Mr Khmer-Sydney, not!

Lok Mom Yin & Ly Diep: I appreciate you as being yourself - a true unique Khmer. Believe in what you are doing, you will succeed!

To all SRP supporters & Khmers: it's time to learn some history. Youns/Viets always paint our Khmer nationalists and then we start biting each other without thinking.

You need to accept the truth that Sam Rainsy's political career almost comes to an end. I appreciate his courage and his commitment to changes, but when comes to Leadership, he is not the most charismatic leader for Cambodia yet.

I invite you to be open-minded and to re-assess all his deeds:
- Changing 2/3 majority to 50%+1 is the biggest mistake to exchange for his return
- Claiming to boycott the 4th-term assembly meeting today and switching to attend the meeting the next day is considered what?...
- Blaming others for not wanting him and SRP to unite with other democratic parties. What his rationale being a leader?
- Dropping case against Hun Xen in the US? Why need to drop?...
- Why running away from your loyal members? Look at MP Mu Sochua. What Hun Xen can do to her?
- SRP needs to solve the internal issues and stop painting the ones who offer the ideas/opinions
- Public debates among all opposition and self-claimed democratic parties should be held publicly and let the public judge.

I'm not a supporter of HRP, SRP and whosoever, but always attend those leaders' meeting. One solution for our nation is to UNITE, UNITE & UNITE. Don't use pretext/excuses.

Please learn to trust with vigilance.

Best Regards to all true Khmers!
