Cambodia: Four [KR] leaders will be tried following the trial of Duch, the executioner.

Her pretty Sino-Khmer face sometimes shows a grimace of concern. It is as if a painful memory or a dark thought suddenly flashes through her mind. Theary Seng was a former victim of the Khmer Rouge regime under which 1.7 million Cambodians died between 1975 and 1979.

She joined the civil party in the trial of the four main Khmer Rouge leaders which will take place in Phnom Penh following the conclusion of the ongoing trial for Duch, the executioner. During the preliminary hearing, Theary Seng engaged Nuon Chea, the former number 2 leader of the Khmer Rouge regime and she did not hesitate to point out to the judges of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC): "If Nuon Chea is not responsible, then who is responsible for the death of my parents and other victims?" However, some found her to be "too emotional," if not "misplaced". However, Theary Seng does not want to make up for that.

"Forum"

Covered by an elegant Khmer silk shawl while sitting at her office at the Centre for Social Development, one of the leading Cambodian NGO, she does not want to lose sight on what she considers to be the main interest of the trial and its limitations. "The Khmer Rouge trial has legal significance. This is about the rule of law. People must see that justice is rendered. But the court is only a forum where the evidence is evaluated. This has nothing to do with justice." She deplores the legal wrangling between lawyers and prosecutors behind the ECCC bulletproof windows. "Justice is much broader,” she said. “If a Khmer Rouge were to come and meet me right now and he were to apologize for the death of my parents, even without any tribunal, then it would a fuller form of justice, more satisfactory than any legal proceedings."

Theary Seng was 4 years old when the Khmer Rouge entered Phnom Penh on April 17, 1975. Her father was a senior officer in Lon Nol’s Republican army – the weak marshal whom the U.S. presidents, from Nixon to Ford, supported with funds, weapons and military advisers.

The forced evacuation by the Khmer Rouge of the capital were followed by a huge stream of hundreds of thousands of refugees who had to survive in the countryside under constant threat from guns wielded by kids dressed in black; the constant presence of death, disease, starvation and executions was the kaleidoscope of images that was etched into Theary’s mind as a young girl. Her father was "summoned" in the weeks following the fall of the Cambodian capital. Her mother soon learned from the mouth of a Khmer Rouge that he "will not return back." Theary's family – her four brothers, mother and grandmother – then fled to Svay Rieng province, near the Vietnamese border, the home of her father’s parents. "At first, the reception by the ‘old people’ – as the Khmer Rouge classified the farmers as opposed to ‘new people,’ i.e. the arriving city folks – is cordial. However, pettiness soon rained in very quickly. The old people looked at me and my mother’s fair skin and they thought that we had led a luxurious life, thus, it was time for them to take revenge on us."

"Ropes"

At the end of 1977and early 1978, in their paranoia, the Khmer Rouge leadership ordered extensive purges of "traitors" whom they accused of having "a Vietnamese brain with a Khmer body." The eastern provinces bordering with Vietnam were particularly targeted. "Entire villages were executed. The Eastern zone was the center of cruelty," Theary Seng said. Annoyed by the city folks who took refuge in his territory, the village chief ordered their arrest.

Moved to the Boeung Rei detention center in late 1978, one evening, Theary saw a Khmer Rouge night guard entering their hut with wet ropes in his hands. She asked her mother: "Why do they carry wet ropes?" "Go back to sleep, my daughter," her mother replied. "These were the last words I ever heard from her again." According to the Documentation Center of Cambodia, about 20,000 prisoners were killed in the Boeung Rei prison. After the fall of the Khmer Rouge in January 1979, the family migrated to the United States after they were sponsored by one of her uncles. Haunted by the loss of her parents, Theary Seng now focuses on assisting other victims. Through her own experience, she encourages them to join the civil party.

This is not news but but rather shameless self-promotion by Theary Seng. The trial is not even the topic of the article and there is no substance. Just another pretext to post another photo of Theary Seng.

It is really regrettable that what used to be the best place to find information about Cambodia has been reduced to Theary Seng's personal photo diary, a tool for her self-marketing and for her to throw dirt at decent people.

it is obvious from this article that justice is not Theary Seng's concern unless it is about her. Its like she is the only victim. The real Khmer victims are reduced to a backdrop for her self-promotion, kind of in the same category as her elegant Khmer silk shawl.

whatever!... you should be a shame of yourself for doing nothing but blablablab. you must be son/daughter of a killer and so off course you don't want justice done, am I right?. the truth is no one in this world can get away from any injustice that he/she had committed, simple as that!. Justice will be done on earth as it is in heaven, so if not now, wait until "judgement day to come" by then, Theary and I will be seated on the the thrown and laugh at you forever!.

As long as Theory and I live, we will continue to stand for social rights and social justice. In the end I am sure the good will win whether you like it or not. half of my extended families are gone and I am not going to sit and nothing. I will make sure my voice will be heard from end to end of the earth. So, may god let all these criminals pay for what they have done to us innocent people, Amen.

Mr Sam Rainsy, Why don't you sue PM Hun Sen as you promise to us Cambodian people and your true supporters?

Are you tried to bargain or negotiate with PM Hun Sen again like 2005 lawsuit at America??? Why?? Why??

We want to see Mr Sam Rainsy act as he said to sue PM Hun Sen in every democracy Countries court of justice around the world.

We want the results as transparency, from your progress in suing PM Hun Sen in every court of justices!!!

We are Cambodian people afraid that you are just using the lawsuit to scare PM Hun Sen than when PM Hun Sen gives you (Mr Sam Rainsy) green light. You again, hang your Lawsuit like 2005.

Mr Sam Rainsy, You must do as you said, otherwise you the same as Mr Kim Soka.

Mr Sam Rainsy, where are your law suit VS Hun SEn in America Court of justice? We want to see and hear the stories transparency because we afraid that you are just try to bargain with Hun Sen like 2005 again.

We Cambodian people as well as your supporters are waiting to see your real action in suing PM Hun Sen (In America Court of justice, all countries’ court of justice in Europe, Japan Court of justice, Australia Court of justice, New Zealand court of justice, Canada court of Justice, UN court of justice, World Human Right court of justice, NATO court of justice…) as you Mr Sam Rainsy said.

Mr Sam Rainsy must do as you said OK. Don’t you dare to bargain with PM Hun Sen like 2005 again?

May be you can’t be Prime Minister of Cambodia because of unfair election as 5-6 million Vietnamese votes for Hun Sen and Hun Sen add up his cheating skill in every election but you can be a great Khmer Hero by suing PM Hun Sen about the facts that he has done to Cambodia and Cambodian people so far.

If you Can’t be Prime Miniter due unfair election all the times but Mr Sam Rainsy, you can gives a great stain to PM Hun Sen and CPP Vietnam slave about their crimes against Cambodian people since 1970 until today.

5:26 I think you are accurate to point out that what princess Theary wants is sitting on some sort of throne, rather than justice for the victims.

We khmer should learn to promote unity not separation. if khmer don't love khmer no one in the world will. What you are trying to do to is fuel up the past. It is best to let the past be by gone for today is more important than yesterday. People make mistake from time to time, so Let learn from the past experience and turn it into a positive outcome. Right now, we need all intellectual people to help to rebuild our nation/country. Hun Sen needs to reform his carbonate and be more aware of the previous king and his family member who is still to rule our nation to yet another ruin.

Hun Sen needs to eliminate the king and his family member now by take away their status before history repeat itself. This so-called king is nothing but evils acting to ruin for all of us. If not, this stupid will find way to kill Hun Sen and his son or family very soon. History shown that this stupid is capable of killing his own people. Back then record shown that a lot of servicemen had been disappear while serving his monarchy. When thing gone wrong he run, unlike the king/queen of England they stay with their people until the end of war.

So, Hun Sen you are a good PM, so be smart. You have to include Madam Mu to your benefit and add value to your history. If you do this you will be prosper and live to PM for along time yet to come. I am very happy when this happen, I will return to the country with much confident. By then I hope to meet you and bless you even more on how to live a better life.

Theory is giving her life up for all victims including her parents that is why she is in Srok khmer rather than USA. She is our hero regardless of what you are trying to say, it is said that 'action is louder than word'. So, you think you are that smart why don't you come out like Theory, huh? so, don't let me curse you to face with death like it did to us and our families. You don't want to know how hard it is to live without our beloved one near by, it is tougher than you can imagine it. So, whoever you see acting on behalf of the vulnerable, you should learn to appreciate them. In other words understanding morality will save your soul, my dear friend.

6:02, thanks for kind words. Yes, it must be hard to grow up without your loved ones. Its a tragedy.

But I think you are wrong as far as Theary is concerned. Sure, no one should loose their parents but no-one should use such loss for shameless self-promotion.

What do you mean she is giving up her life? Its really comfortable living with US citizenship and big salary in a mansion in srok Khmer.

Just imagine you lose your parents and seeing millions suffered in such brutal way and then you tried so hard to learn to get a degree, so that you can go out and be their voices/advocating for them to find their rights and justice because they are unable to act/speak for themselves, the feeling is really rewarding and it is not just about the money,

it is to do with goal and ambition to stand up for the vulnerable people. The truth is, in the end we all die and the question is, what have you done to benefit yourself and the society as whole?. So, not all people think about money,

it is to do with goal and ambition and then comes with reward for the after life. Anyway, I can see your english is very good and I can tell that you are an educated one too, So, please help to support our dear sister and encourage her to continue with pride and privilege, Ok? God blesses :)

Theary!! Don't pay attentions to a few people who criticize you. You get to realize that not all people love/like us and not all people hate us. That is why the world is so unique. Keep doing what you see is right for Khmers.
WARN!! DO NOT Fall to Yuon TRAP.
Last week my uncle told me while he was in Cambodia a few people told him "Bong euy. Yuon are all over in srok yeung". My uncle knew right away that was a trap to catch and kill Khmers who are anti-Yuon, so do not fall into it. OBSERVE and LEARN. Yuon this day speak fluently Khmer and they have Khmer names.

Theary Seng, you are inspiring so many Cambodian and Worlds'. We admire you. But don't dream so much on Khmer Rough trial. If the World courts as long as don't put Vietnamese, Chinese, American and Russia on trial. All Cambodian still don't get full justice.

You know, this is part of the tactics that the government tried to discredit or shameful embarress any one that educated over their governmental officials. If she was very emotional, she had her right. Plus, she went through and lived through it. Also, she lost her parent during The Khmer Rouge's regime.
So, just let her continue working in the ( Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia ECCC).
Good luck for Ms. Theary Seng and the people of Cambodia.

Khmer Rouge abused my rights and freedom, and they all will be put behind bar. Don't forget, you were accountable for your deeds. Whatever it is, I would strongly supported Theary's actions.
