Prime Minsiter Abhisit Vejjajiva announced his resignation as leader of the Democrat Party on Monday morning.
The outgoing premier made the announcement after the Pheu Thai Party crushed his party in the 2011 general election yesterday.
"I've decided to resign because I could not lead my party to victory in the election," Mr Abhisit said.
Democrat executive members will meet to select a new party leader within 90 days, as the law requires, he said.
Before the election, Mr Abhisit said he would step down as Democrat leader if his party won fewer seats than in the previous general election.
The unofficial election result shows that the Democrats won 159 seats yesterday. In 2007, the party won 164 seats.

if that's true, then cambodia got to change, really! make sure to have different candidate in the election! if you put same old faces as candidate in the election, then all are the same, can't just say that about cpp, etc... they all copied each other, really! none of them is better than the them in that sense, really! got to put different candidate for election, although the political parties' names are the same, the candidate must be different or stop whining already! all parties are at fault for putting same candidate in election. i think people vote for the political party, not for the same old faces of sam rainsy or hunn sen, for that matter. but if they kept on putting same faces of candidate in the election, then people have no choice but to vote for the political party who is more effective and the one that can related better to cambodia and khmer people, you know! so, learn from yingluck and thailand in terms of election process, etc, really!
and stop whining already, there's no terms limitation in cambodia, so, why are people keep on whining here? wake up, people!
